My bank is moving

The bank has offered to give us a scanner when they move so we can at least continue to make deposits. One requirement is the use of internet explorer. We currently use firefox on a dell xp system.

My question is can I toggle back and forth between the two or will explorer insist on being the primary software.

It also needs an ethernet cable to hook up to the scanner. I assume that somewhere on the back of my cpu there is a port for the cable.

This computer is slow as it uses an earthlink dial up system. If I change this to a wireless setup then would I still need the cable.

Who knows what else might pop up in way of a problem. Might be better to change banks to one close by.

I have four browsers on my computer. You could have a dozen...it won't make any difference; just use the one you want for the task at hand.

As far as the slowness of your computer, your connection speed to the Internet is limited by it being dialup. Whether you use a cable or a wireless connection, your speed will still be slow. Whether you can connect the scanner wirelessly will depend on whether it has this capability, but it won't make any difference in your connection speed to the Internet.

Your questions were a little ambiguous about what you were connecting to what vis-a-vis cable or wireless. If I didn't answer all of your concerns, please ask again with a little more specificity.

I've found that while companies will say that Internet Explorer is "required" it isn't that other browsers won't work, but rather than if you have a problem they only want to provide support for IE. I'd give Firefox a shot and see what happens. With that said, there's no problem using more than one browser.

There's no way for us to know if your particular computer as an Ethernet port, although they are fairly common. The port looks like a regular phone jack but is just a bit larger. If you don't have one you'll have to add an Ethernet card. Are you sure it's not a USB cable?

greg_h: That's correct. They look like a credit card, with the Mastercard or Visa logo on the lower right corner. When using at an ATM, you MUST use a PIN#. When using at a retailer, generally you can choose between a signature transaction or a PIN# transaction. In the US, there was a huge dispute over this. Fees to the retailer are much higher for signature transactions, which are processed through the Mastercard/Visa network, than for PIN# transactions, which are processed by smaller, regional systems. At Walmart, for example, the payment pad automatically prompted you for the PIN# if you swiped a debit card. It did not give you the option to do a signature transaction. In the examples I have seen cited, service fees to the retailer on a $100 transaction are about $3 for a signature transaction and 35 cents for a PIN# transaction. Personally, I have ceased using my debit card, except at ATM's. If the number is boosted, your account could be cleaned out before you realize it. Although you would likely receive reimbursement under fraud protection, you are still without the money until then. With a credit card, fraud still creates a hassle, but at least your bank account is not cleaned out.

I am glad you have the possible renter, and someone you know and trust, at that. I have a nurse I know doing a rent-to-own in my old house. With the house across the street in foreclosure and for sale at $69.9K (no typos), I worry that she will walk away from our agreement at $139K. The house across the street is a third smaller and the lot smaller, but with all the vacant properties, bank foreclosures, short sales and a rotten economy, I can imagine her deciding that she can get more house elsewhere if the fall in values in Michigan does not slow. I hope it works out with the renters you have in mind. It sounds like the perfect solution for you. One thing to keep in mind is how much your home appreciated and how much value you added by improving it after you bought it. If you end up renting for three years or longer, you will need to be able to show what improvements you made to the house so that you can offset whatever increase in value the house had since you bought it. With the huge capital gains write-off we now get when selling a house, I would bet that people are not saving the receipts like we used to. If you never expected to rent out your home, your record keeping may not be up to par. If you don't live in a house two of the last five years before selling, though, you lose that capital gains write-off. Then you need the receipts to show your improvements so that you can increase the "basis" you have in the house. Best wishes for a low-stress transition to your new home!

You should ensure that you make at least one transaction per account per year to ensure that your accounts are not assumed to be abandoned. It's a pain, but very important. I think the only laws more archaic and convoluted than banking laws are liquor laws.

Yes, 'stuff' happens and I'd hate to think that I was dependent upon my computer, and equipment, and my ISP in order to do 'required' banking.

Only you know your history and record with the existing bank and whether or not it would benefit you in any way on down the line to stay with them.

It is not uncommon to have more than one banking facility. Maybe looking into a local credit union would be a good thing for you at this time.
