flash drives

I just recently bought two 4G flash drives to store pictures on and also genealogy. I did every thing according to the instructions and was told that I had down loaded them. Today, I go to take a look at what I have and nothing comes on the computer.
I have Windows XP.
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong???? |
