What causes fine black lines across paper?

I'm using an Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printer and have been getting fine black lines across the paper, sometimes all the way,sometimes not. It occurs on a sporadic basis. There may be one line or hundreds. I notice it most on photo prints 8.5 x 11 or larger, although it's sometimes on plain paper.

I've tried head cleaning and changing cartridges, without relief.

Any ideas what might be causing this problem?

Hey there,
I am not familiar with your printer but I have a Canon and part of the maintenance is doing a nozzle check. Also you might be able to do a print head alignment. I really don't know for sure, just some ideas to try. Good luck.

It is most likely that your print head needs cleaning. Look for printers in your control panel and find the properties menu. click on utilities do each of the 3 items listed. They should be 1)Nozzle check 2)Head Cleaning 3)Print Head Alignment. Be sure to print a test page for each step as this will tell you if the process is successful or not. Also, You may have to do the head cleaning more than once. Don't despair it sometimes happens that the procedure has to be repeated twice or ever 3 times.

I live in Northern NH so talking about black bears.Which for the most part don't bother people that much.However did have one quite a few years ago that was a dumpster bear and was teaching the cubs the same thing.She was kinda like the town bear and never hurt anyone but I do remember her less then 5 ft from my door while the cubs were cavorting in my dumpster and of course the potential was there..I just emptied the dumpster and moved it away from the house and chained it.She never got into the bird feeders though.But Since then I have taken them down every Spring since that is what F@G says to do.Anyhow I just bought my hummer a fushia so he can use that till the honeysuckle blossoms.He only has Apple blossoms and maybe azalea in a day or two.Like the idea of hanging the feeders higher-used to do that with food when hiking!!

I am not enamoured with Epson printers. I have found that photos that were printed with the photo printer faded badly. I have some that are side by side with what I have printed with my HP. No comparison - the HP ones look so much better. It doesn't take long for the Epson photos to start looking washed out. I would never repair a printer (unless it was 100% covered under a warranty) - it is far cheaper to buy new. I hate the fact that we are filling our landfills with this stuff though.

Did the half image fill the page or was the page only half filled? Did you use the 'Print preview' and resize before printing? Take a look at the link I provided if you are unsure Norm If half the image filled the page you definitely need to use the 'Print preview feature and move the picture around to set it how you want it to look. Be sure to grab the corner 'ears' to resize the picture so that it does not get distorted. Using the side or top ears to resize will give you either short fat folk or tall skinny folk. Manual snakes are very good at punching a small hole through a blockage in a 3 or 4 inch line from a toilet. A partial blockage they just skip over. Some rental houses have power augers (sorry, I was just drawing a blank on the full name). Keep in mind they are bulky, heavy, and take some finesse to use. Good ole' Roto Rooter has made their fortune off power augers. In some places even the plumbers refer to them. It is not a piece of equipment for the inexperienced. A buddy rented one and his friend lost half a thumb trying to 'help' him (luckily non-dominant hand). My buddy covered his medical bills (not small to clean up an amputation). .

I discussed the intermittent problem I was having with Epson printer support and was told to bring the printer to a Service Center.

Since it's over 100 miles there, I resolved the problem myself by buying a new printer. The other was over 7 years old, so it was time.

I had cleaned and replaced dozens of cartridges. Sometimes it would go for weeks without a problem. Finally it stopped working all together.
