Need a new photo printer. What would you buy?

We are starting to look at new photo printers. We have a HP photo printer that I have liked but it's aging. Anyone have an Epson? Would like different points of view,sassyo

Hi Sassyo,

Yes, I have an Epson. I had a Lexmark before that, and I just got my Epson about 4 months ago. I love it better than the Lexmark. Not only that, but the ink on my model is half the price of the Lexmark I had, but lasts as long. It also prints BETTER!!

The model I have is "Epson Stylus Photo 925". I got it at Staples for around $125 on sale, but it was worth around $160. I wanted to make sure I didn't get a cheapie one this time. The color ink cartridges are about $23.00, and the black ink is about $18.00. But of course the new printer came with new ones.

Sassyo, I just ordered a new printer. My HP 930C died a couple of days ago. It picked a bad time to quit running as I was just starting to print my Christmas cards! I am ready for a new printer though, as I have never been happy with the quality of the HP prints. My first printer was a Canon and the photos were bright and crisp. So I researched the new Canons and chose the i960 Printer. All the user reviews that I read raved about the great quality of the printouts, especially when printed on photo paper. So I am anxiously awaiting my new printer (and new computer)! Good luck and be sure to let us know which printer you buy and how well you like it. I have heard great things about the Epson printers too.

A brief repeat of the basics: The hood should overhang the cooking zone such that a 45-degree expanding cone from each pot, wok, or pan is intercepted by the hood. The flow rate (corrected for pressure losses) should be at least the aperture area (square feet) of the hood times 3 feet per second times some guess factor ( less than 1.0 ) that accounts for baffle effectiveness in increasing air velocity in the baffles close vicinity and for interior hood shape. Conservatism in performance would assume the factor is one, while conservatism in price and visual obtrusiveness would hope for 0.5, perhaps. Actual flow rate for typical installations may be only 2/3 that for which the blower is rated at zero static pressure, even with an active make-up air system. Duct size at full power should allow the air velocity to be 500 to 1500 feet per minute depending on, respectively, whether the ducting is in a warm environment or cold environment. Make-up air always equals what gets out through the hood. The goal is to supply this without drawing it from wall switch covers, window seal leakage, and backdrafting of furnaces, hot water heaters, and fireplaces. For high flows this requires a system that is at a minimum passive, and at a maximum uses PID control to keep the house pressure constant at a very small negative pressure independent of fan speed or use of other fans, appliances, and fireplaces. Although my hood is a Wolf, made by Independent, there have been several kudosi given to ModernAire on this forum, who will be happy to build a tailor-made configuration. An external blower and intermediate silencer will minimize kitchen noise. kas

These days, a printer is almost a disposable item. You can sometimes get a new printer cheaper than the cost of 2 ink cartridges. The downside of your situation is that you don't know if the printer you buy today will be compatible with Win8 when it is released. When Win8 is released, printers that are compatible with it probably won't be discounted much...if at all. I have an HP Officejet 4500 which does an ok job of print-copy-scan-fax and is available in both wired and wireless. It does not tolerate off-brand ink cartridges but it does work well. It might be okay to get you to the day when you get a Win8 computer and a printer that works with it.

What would you do? Beach house needs new paint, landscape, etc...

http://www.spray-onvinyl.com/ We have an old farm house that was built in 1897 that we considered using a spray on vinyl for. Our elements are not as harsh as a beach enviromant, with wind, sand and salt. We ended up having to replace all the siding with hardie plank and painted it, rather than pre-finished color. There are other companies besides this one, but it is something to look into to protect all that siding. Good Luck

Need new exterior paint and trim. What colors would you choose?

I feel that if you paint the trim around the window, then you should paint all other trim. It would look odd otherwise and honestly, it would look like only parts of the home have been freshened up. There's a house I drive past that apparently buys a run of siding as the owners' budget allows. So it's been a slowly disappearing face of Tyvek wrap for the past 4 years. Personally. I wish they had just saved up over the years and done it all at once. So I also vote for just waiting until you can do it all at once. If I can barely tolerate/ignore the exterior of my house for 12 years, anyone can. I don't think the other responder was suggesting that you paint the garage door the same CURRENT color, but instead, once you do paint the stucco, make the garage the same color. I personally think cream colored house, or gray, with black trim would look sharp. Can you find more of those eaves and add them to the entrance at some point? Have no clue if it's possible, just a thought. Please make sure whatever siding you paint, you paint it all, not just what faces the street. Trim those shrubs too. Just saw that brick on the front, if that's the only place you have the brick, I'd budget for removing it. Looks ridiculous. Keep us posted.

You probably have your new printer by now...but if you don't ... Canon.

I was a devoted HP printer fan.

After my first digital Canon, and the little digital photo printer that made real photo postcards...not inkject, but layered laminated photos, I became a Canon nut.

They don't make much, but what they do make, they make well.

Canon was the thorn in Xerox's side for office copiers long ago.

I not only have their little photo printer that goes with their digital cameras, but I have their all-in-one scanner-copier-printer. My MP750 was dirt cheap at 129.00 because Canon is bringing out their new models.

This copier makes photos look better than the originals when scanned...it is an inkjet, though. What I can do with that machine is scary.

If you want to go even cheaper, the MP 390 is now only 99.00, (originally 200.00) it has all the standard inputs for flashcards and media, plus it is a fax, it however lacks a document feeder which is sorely missed when there are 200 or more sheets to copy.

I have the MP 390 also...great little machine.

These great prices I found at Amazon...Love the 750 (and individual ink cartridges for color...no more having to buy a large color cartridge when you only run out of one color!)

the MP 780 is basically the 750 with a fax.

I bought a HP 1600 scanner copier and printer. Its easy to use and get great photos and copys... office max ahd it for 99.00 and I really like it. If I can use it anybody can...

I have the HP three 1600. Not bad for the money. For photos, you're better off having them printed commercially. It's cheaper, and they will last longer. Lots of places, like Costco, you can upload the photo and pick it up in an hour or two. Or they'll mail them to you. Try a few plalces, because the quality varies. I'm a professional photographer, and this is what I do for all my regular, family snapshots.
