I usually make my own, but I did see some at Wal-Mart the other day. It was with the quilting supplies (I make my own by ironing high thread count muslin onto freezer paper (iron to the shiney side). Trim to exactly 8½ x 11 (or 8½ x 14 - if you can set your document to print legal size). I heat set the ink with an iron after it has printed, but it will not be water proof. You can use a product called Bubble Jet Set to make it water proof. I have never tried it.

I have made several memory quilts using Bubble Jet and they have held up really well after a couple of years. You have to use the Bubble Jet Rinse, as well, to insure the photos set well. Here are some hints that I have learned: 1. Use only 100% cotton 2. Use the BJ solution to soak the fabric and let it dry before printing the photo onto the fabric that has been ironed onto freezer paper for stability. 3. Let the photo dry at least 1/2 hour before soaking it in the rinse. 4. Press the block to insure setting of the photo. It is a fun project and I recommend using BJ. I have used t-shirt transfers and they have a plastic feel to them, but the BJ treated fabric feels the same way it felt prior to treating it. The solutions are not inexpensive, but it lasts a very long time. I found that you do not have to add a lot of the solution in order to soak the fabric, otherwise you will be wasting the unused BJ.

All this discussion reminded me that waaaay back in the recesses of my addled brain was a dim memory of reading that if you adhere fabric to freezer paper you can run it through a printer. I think that's, essentially, what I bought -- 4 pieces of muslin stuck on freezer paper for $10. Some racket! So I got some freezer paper and ironed a piece of cotton that I had washed to remove the sizing onto it and put it through my ink jet printer. It printed just fine. I got a clear -- if not vibrant -- image with no ink bleeding. I heat set the ink as the directions on the commercial labels instructed me to do. I could not scratch any of the text away with my fingernails. I pulled the fabric off the freezer paper and scrunched it up and straightened it out and the image was still clear and not deteriorated. Then I cut the fabric in half and wet half of it -- no detergent or aggitation, just wet -- and the image is gone. GONE. So, now I know I can experiment with fabric scraps without spending $2.50 a sheet to do it. But I haven't made any progress on getting a permanent label. The fabric I used was a very light batik print. Tomorrow I'll get some white cotton and whatever ink fixatives I can come up with and start experimenting. I'll post some pix.

I've done both methods. The Printed Treasures printer fabric is certainly easy. My major objection is that the fabric is a bit stiff - probably why it prints so well! Also make sure you prewash all other fabrics, because the Printed Treasures seems to attract any loose dyes in the wash water, even with dye-catchers. It's also expensive, so I would suggest you do 2 to 4 photos per page, making sure to leave a margin around them for your seam allowance. Making the photos square will probably simplfy piecing. I've also done the Bubble Jet Set method. You soak the fabric, then let it dry. Iron it onto freezer paper, print, let dry for 30 minutes, the rinse with Bubble Jet Set rinse. With this method, you could use either bleached or unbleached muslin, or a broadcloth. Fabric treated this way is less likely to pick up stray dyes in the wash, and I feel it has a better hand. It's also considerably less expensive. The initial purchase of the solutions might seem a bit pricy, but you don't dump the Jet Set solution down the drain. After soaking your fabric, pour the solution back into the bottle. If you go this route, my DH bought me the most fabulous freezer paper - it's heavier than the stuff on the rolls, and it's already cut in 8.5x11" sheets. I've never seen it in fabric or craft stores, but the manufacturer is C. Jenkins Necktie Company (which made me LOL). www.cjenkinscompany.com General printing instructions - Crop photos carefully. You want more faces than background. Large group shots don't work all that well. Always do a test print on paper in draft mode, but make sure you reset the printer properties to "Best" before printing on fabric. Stock up on ink cartridges!
