There's really nothing one can do to a glass block window to "update" it, short of replacing it entirely. I have two in my home, one of which is in a bathroom and covered with a custom Roman shade when privacy is desired. Some things you just have to let be what they are, and in the case of glass block, the less you try to change it the better, in my opinion. Particularly since a redo isn't in the immediate budget but your friend enjoys the light ... encourage her to accept it as is.

I had one and loved it. (Still love it, but we flooded and it may have to go.). It was curved and required a skilled installer, but it was not at all hard to keep up & we had no mold problems.

I think a room darkening blind that fits inside the window is the way to go. I would first experiment with some black poster board. Cut it to fit the window but leave a half inch gap on each side, because let's face it, nothing ever fits perfectly. If it blocks out enough light even with .5 gap, then I'd get a custom size room darkening shade or blind. I love that your design question includes a hedgehog cage. Wonderful.
