I find Irfanview to be really good for this. The program is free and quite small. If you ever decide to do more with Irfanview you should also download in install the plugins. Open Irfanview, click File click Batch/Conversion rename... and follow along in the new window. You need to do landscapes separate from portraits but I am sure you are aware of that anyway.

To save your images to My pictures if the image is inserted into the email simply right click on each and then 'save as...' A window will appear and by default should point to your My pictures folder. Either click to save or change the name first and save but do not change the suffix (jpg or bmp or whatever) If your images come attached simply right click on one in the space below the address bar where you will see them listed and then save as.... or save all if there are more than one and you want them all. Right click on the star just above this post and you will get the idea.

for some reason those things happen from time to time, sometimes it can be some thing that an update changed. When that happens to me I do what loralee suggested. I just use system restore to go back to the day before when everything was right like it should be. Using system restore is super easy and only takes a few mouse clicks and it can be reversed easily too. I will give the link to how to do system restore.
