cleaner for laminate wood floor

I just had my kitchen remodeled and have laminate wood flooring. Bought the clorox ready mop with cleaner. It looks great until you walk on it, then shows everything, also tried ammonia and water with the same results. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have had a laminate kitchen floor for several years. (One of our better investments!) I use warm water for cleaning it. Never have had to use anything stronger. I would think you may have harmed the finish on the floor. What did the manufacturer say to use?

foggyJ, You scared me when you said I may have damaged the finish. I checked with Pergo and they said ammonia was safe. They also recommended vinegar and water. I think I'll try it. Thanks!

uhm- not wearing shoes in the kitchen?

seriously- what is the 'everything' that you're seeing show up? footprints? dust?

that's one of the downsides of glossy finishes- and with the laminate floors, even their

I vacuum more than I mop on both my vinyl, and my wood floors (the previous owners put vinyl down over the wood floors- we're pulling them up one by one- thankfully, the stuff isn't even glued down!) and made a 'bonnet' for my dry-mop (you know, the shagge ones) that's made of two microfiber 'miracle cloths' stitched together- it works pretty well for me.

We're moving into a house with laminate floors. I asked the manager of a floor covering store and he old me to never let even a water dampened mop touch the floor as it would damage it in time. He wanted to sell me a very expensive spray, to spray on the mop that would evaporate quickly. I wonder if his advice was good or was it just a sales pitch for the expensive product.

I know the same madn told me to use just warm water on my new vinyl but if I needed something stronger to add a little bit ( not much) of vinegar.

Haven't tried it yet, but read that equal parts water, vinegar and rubbing alcohol will leave laminate streak free. I understand what you are saying about laminate showing everything ~ I really hate it in my kitchen for that reason. Every little drip and footstep shows.

I found that just vinegar and water didn't work well, it left a foggy finish on the floor. I've been using a steam cleaner on it and really don't care for the results I'm getting from that either.

Sorry for scareing you, cindylue. My floor is very light in color. The color of old-fashioned "blonde wood". Very little shows on it. (Black dog hair, shows pretty well!)
Hope you find a solution. No pun intended.

Thanks for your input everyone. You're right, barefoot in the kitchen. I also have twin grandsons that are 12 months old, so everything that touches thier hands touches my floor. I'm going to try a microfiber cloth. Just might have to use it after everytime they visit.

cindy,
I use windex on my laminate (pergo) floors and they look like new, I spray it on and mop it off with a terry cloth covered mop.

I tried the equal parts vinegar/water/rubbing alcohol that I suggested above and it worked great! Much better than the steam cleaner I've been using. I just put the mixture in a bowl and dipped a microfiber cloth into it, rang it out and stuck it on the bottom of my velcroed dustmop. Cleaned all the drips and spots up and left the floor streak free!

My sister in law bought me a mop which has a cloth that is held on with velcro, it is that Miracle cloth stuff. I only use hot water on my congoleum floors and this mop works great, no streaks at all now. I only see these at craft shows most of the time but I did see thm at our Roziers hardware store around the holidays.
They cost around $25, but are well worth it! Before I was having to mop and then get on my hands and knees to dry it so it wouldn't streak! Best gift I have ever gotten!

I have dark cherry Alloc laminate floor and I agree, it shows everything. The cleaning is not the problem, the light across the floor shows every anything that has touched it. Very frustrating, but I'm getting use to speed mopping many times a day, lol.....(((((
