Dirty Steam Iron

I found a site that recommended white vinegar to clean the residue out of a steam iron. I followed the instructions which were to use 1/2 and 1/2 white vinegar and water. But, I didn't have distilled white vinegar so I used some rice wine vinegar. Then I let all the mixture vent with the iron set either to max steam/linen or max steam/cotton, until it was empty. I refilled it with plain water and repeated the process. Only, with water I got a puddle of brown liquid that smelled like burnt vinegar. Now I need to get that stuff out. Does anyone have a suggestion? I thought I might try rubbing alcohol but I am afraid of fire and damage to plastic/rubber parts.
