How exactly do you do this? I, too, have a steam cleaner (Hoover Platinum). What mixture do you use? Spray on first? If so, let sit how long? Then use plain water in steamer? Or, do you mix up a solution and use it in your steamer?

I realize that it depends on the type of carpet. I have a berber, but I don't know what it's made of, as it was in the house when I bought it. I cannot get it clean.

I was going to try spraying with Oxyclean, letting sit, and then steam cleaning first, but if that doesn't work, I'll try the bleach.

If carpet gets wrecked, I'll rip it out.

If you use bleach on any carpet but Herculon, it will be ruined.....and by bleach I mean chlorine bleach.
