I've never heard you should stay away from bleach. I've lived 14 years with a septic system and I use bleach regularly, in the washing machine and to clean with. I DO, however, treat the septic system once a month. Rid-X is one option, but I found a cheaper option. It's called Activator 1000, from Ecological Technology. I got a 3-year supply (twice now) for $135. I didn't pay tax on it and I don't think I paid shipping either. Considering the store bought stuff costs about 100 for a year, I figure I got a good deal and don't have to remember to buy it. It comes in 3 plastic tubs with lid and a scoop. Hope this helps.
