cleaning wood floors - Pledge?

Posted by sherry3 (My Page) on

We have fairly new wood floors. We generally just sweep them and they stay clean, as long as we clean up spot problems with a damp rag. Our new cleaning woman started using Pledge on them and it seems to strip the finish from them. Has anyone else had this experience?

I know you aren't supposed to use Murphy's Oil on solid wood floors but I wasn't sure about things like Pledge.

I wouldn't use Pledge. Even if it was ok for the finish it is slippery as heck. We use Bona Kemi products.

Do NOT use Pledge or any other wood polish on your floors. Use a simple vinegar and water solution to mop, if you must. I only spot clean with this solution and mop maybe every 6 months.

I use Bona Hardwood floor cleaner and have seen many others post here as well with the same advice. It is an excellent wood floor cleaner. I think they have a web site. I purchase mine at the hardwood floor co. where we purchased our flooring. LOL!!!

Uh-oh.......why aren't you supposed to use Murphy's on the floor? I've been using it for nine years on mine. What have I done?!?!

Actually, I heard that you can use Murphy's on the floor under certain conditions. Mine is stained and has urethene finish. It absolutely ruined my floor when my teenage son decided to clean (whole story) ours!! I think the lable on the bottle explains the types of flooring it can be used on.

I just purchased a new floor cleaning set called Orange Glo which is specifically for wood floors. It's kind of like a Swiffer for wood. I haven't tried it yet but it's newly out and it could be just the thing for you.

Clean wood flooring with Vinegar and water if you just want it clean. If you want that polished look clean with Murphy's oil soap.

Their website says:
"Is Murphy's safe for cleaning wood floors?
"Yes, Murphy Oil Soap is safe to use on all finished wood surfaces, such as wood floors finished with polyurethane. So cleaning hardwood floors with Murphy's is safe as long as the surface is finished....Remember, Murphy Oil Soap should not be used on unfinished, unsealed, or waxed wood surfaces because they may be water sensitive. Test an inconspicuous area with plain water before using Murphy Oil Soap. Discoloration or dulling indicates the wood may be waxed or needs refinishing."

In our last house the (finished) bedroom floor was ruined by Murphy's Oil Soap.

Hi
Are you talking about the Pledge spray furniture polish or the Pledge Wood Floor Cleaner which is mixed with water as Murphys Oil is? The Pledge cleaner does not leave a film as Murphys does and it smells like bubble gum. I have a cleaning service and use the Pledge floor cleaner or Bona. It depends on the clients wants, some like the smell of the Pledge.

I believe this depends on the kind of wood and the kind of finish you have. We built our house a year ago and had reclaimed longleaf pine floors installed (the wood came from a Louisianna textile mill and was remilled). The gentleman who installed them put a clear urethane finish on them. He said vacuum them with a Pro-Serv vacuum and use very dilute vinegar and water to mop them. Keep them dry. According to the installer, if you use Murphy's and then you ever want to refinish the floors, it will be difficult to get the stain to penetrate evenly because the Murphy's soaks into the wood unevenly and acts like an oil.
