I've just bought my first house, a lovely turn of the last century Victorian. I'm in the process of packing up 15 years of stuff and moving across town.

While all the big work (roof, wiring, walls) has already been done on this place, the hardwood floors throughout are going to need to be re-done. But obviously, not soon! Itt will probably be a year or so before I can get to that.

The house has been empty for a few months, and the first floor floors are particularly gritty and sticky. I'd like to clean them before I start moving in all of my furniture and rugs. What's the best thing to clean them with, given that there is varnish in some places, and bare wood in others?

Look forward to advice -- first step on this big adventure and I want to land on the right foot!
