What is the best way to clean polyurethane finished kitchen cabinets. Cabinets are light/med. oak?

How to repair area around door handle with fingernail marks/gouges? Can I sand a little and see if stain will adhere, then varnish over?

Manufacturers recommend wiping them down with a moist cloth, but that hardly works once grease has accumulated.

Rather than sanding and staining, I would try a touch-up crayon first.
