How to remove sticky from plastic coated wire shelves

Need information on how to remove the sticky off of plastic coated wire stacking shelves. The sticky is hard to get off of hands after touching. The shelves are about 10 years old.

Tried soaking in bathtub with very hot water and liquid dish washing detergent. Did not phase the sticky.

What will remove the sticky short of having to replace the shelves.

If shelves were sprayed with clear spray paint, would it cover the sticky? If so, what would it make....a mess of soft goo on the shelves?

Thanks for your suggestions.

There are a variety of products that might work - Goo-Gone, WD-40, Goof-Off, mineral spirits. Wipe or spray them on and then wipe off.
