help removing carpet adhesive strips

I have hardwood floors in my kitchen. I stupidly put down those carpet adhesive double stick strips under a small hooked rug I have by where the sink is. The strips barely held down the rug, and now that I have replaced the old rug with a new one, I am left with the remnants of the strips that are stuck to the floor. There is no adhesive left on the top of the strips, just ugly 3"wide pieces of thin beige tape stuck to the floor. I have a water based satin finish on my floors (no stain). They are natural red oak. How do I remove the remnants of the strips without staining or damaging the floor? I was thinking that I would spray WD-40 on the strips and then rub the gooey adhesive strips off the floor. Can't use nail polish remover or any of the other home remedies I have thought of for fear of damaging the finish on the floor. What about the WD-40 trick? Any ideas/comments/personal disasters I should know about?

Thanks, all.
