Vacuums for pet hair

Posted by fernsk (My Page) on

I have the world's hairiest cat - his name is Mocha - he is a ragdoll cat and is 14 pounds of hairy kitty. I have allergies and so need a really good vacuum cleaner that will pick up "tonnes" of silky hair. One of my friends has a Dyson animal and it does a great job but I find it a bit heavy to lug up and down the stairs and a bit expensive to have 2 vacuums. I need something lightweight but really good. Any ideas would be welcome

Thanks

Fern

Get a Dyson animal although it might be a little heavier it's well worth it. I have burned up 3 expensive vacs so I know there is nothing like a Dyson. Nothing cleans like a Dyson and if you have allergies you will see a big difference.

Does your friend also have a cat with tons of silky hair that impressed you with the Dysons cleaning ability? Dyson Animal didn't rate that well at pet hair cleanup compared to quite a few others in CR's first review of pet hair removal in their last issue. The top scorers on pet hair were the Kenmore Progressive upright excellent (tops overall in everything) Most of the Hoover uprights and canisters as well as the Panasonics and Dirt Devils scored good on pet hair. Dyson DC7 & DC15, fair to poor respectively.
They also weren't impressed with removing pet hair from bagless machine dirt containers because it tends to get staticy and clings to the bin forcing you to pick or wipe it out by hand. I can believe that. I know how all my dogs hair sticks to plastic like a magnet.

My friend has a golden retriever so has had success with the Dyson and I borrowed the Dyson and picked up alot of hair... I will lookfor the Consumer Reports issue and compare results/price/weight

Thanks

Yes, the Dyson Pet didn't do well at all on Consumer Reports tests. For the money I believe the Eureka Boss did the best overall and was rated very good on pet hair. If anyone is burning out vacuums, the filters and bags need to be changed more frequently. The Eureka has a very good hepa filter system so it does not discharge tiny particles with the exhaust air (very important to those with allergies!) Also the Dyson is so overpriced that you can buy two Sears or Eureka's and have one up and one downstairs, which is what I did. Do get the magazine and check these out. A lot of people think you get what you pay for but the most expensive is not always the best. The Dyson success is a result of clever advertising.

I have 4 cats - 2 have long hair. I think my Eureka Boss SuperVac does a very good job and it wasn't expensive. Might be considered heavy though, but I don't have stairs, so I never lift it. I also have a roomba which helps eat the "hair bunnies" and keep them to a minimum (because I'm never going to be one who vaccuums all the time!)

We have a pug that sheds sheds sheds sheds!! I LOVE my Kirby...although it is VERY heavy it does such a fantastic job I overlook the weight issues. They are expensive, but one will last a life time. I've had mine for about 12 yrs and it still works perfectly. Most people don't like them cause they are so heavy...I don't mind cause it picks up everything.

We have a dog that sheds terribly and 4 cats that come in and out and we have an Oreck XL21. This is my second Oreck and I can't say enough wonderful things about it's performance. It does a great job of picking up pet hair among other things. Since it's so light, my kids(6 & 9) even like to run it. The XL21 is a little more expensive, but it also comes with a 21 yr warranty that provides yearly maintainence. I couldn't be happier.

I have a Hoover windtunnel with a special attachment for pet hair (easy to vacume staircase), and I LOVE it. Got it at Sears. Dyson is overpriced and looks too complicated to use, too many gadgets. I checked it out at the store and it took me a few minutes to figure out how to turn it on. I'm really a pretty smart person. I've also had a great history with Hoover vacume cleaners. Whatever you do, don't buy Kenmore.
