Built up grime on white towels?

I know this has come up on the forum many times in the past, but it's more to do with white towels losing their brightness over time.

A year ago I splurged on a set of white Hotel Collection towels from The Bay (same as the ones sold at Macy's). Over the year, the bath towels are in perfect condition but the hand towel and face towel are grey from where they've been rubbed over time (eg. the hand towel is grey on the ends but white in the middle where it isn't used). I tried soaking them in detergent for a couple of hours (I use Arm&Hammer because I'm allergic to a lot of detergents) with Oxyclean, and again with detergent and non-chlorine bleach, but neither seemed to help. The label calls for washing warm (I'll be honest, I usually wash cold) and no chlorine bleach.

Possibly my detergent isn't sufficient? The ingredients are: ARM & HAMMERî Baking Soda Deodorizer, 100% Naturally Derived Cleaning Agents (coconut and/or palm based surfactants), Natural Water Softener, Water

Is there anything that can be done to get the grime out of these?
