How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Posted by loves_plants (My Page) on
Fri, Mar 10, 06 at 13:47

I am considering maid service on a bi-weekly basis... I work full time and I am tired of spending an entire day cleaning.

If any of you already have maid service, or have gotten prices for one, I am curious about what you pay, what they do, and if you are pleased and feel that it's worth the money.

Thanks to all that respond.

I pay $10 an hour.....not pleased.....but it's just this current woman.
I have had someone clean for me for easily 30 years....off and on....mostly on!
I am not pleased with this gal at all.....she sometimes just doesn't show....some times wants to change days, sometimes wants to work fewer hours, sometimes comes late....
But she knows me and knows my house......and because she is so unreliable, doesn't have a lot of jobs and can come and help out for 1/2 a day at a moment's notice.....sometimes!
I am looking for someone else!!

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I pay $75 for biweekly basic cleaning (clean both bathrooms, dust/wipe off all surfaces, vacuum/mop all floors) of a 2500 sq ft, 3 bedroom, 2 bath house. Cleaning staff (2) provide all cleaning products and tools (i.e., they bring their own vacuum cleaner and everything). Makes her truly an independent contractor and I don't have to worry about SS (not that most people do but I think that's why they do it that way).

What you pay will depend on the cost of living in your area and the availability of those services.

No cleaning person is likely to do as good a job as I'd do but I also don't like spending my free time cleaning and I wouldn't do a better job every 2 weeks.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

$80 every 2 weeks includes the basics plus laundry if we want, clean the wood blinds, windows and doors, wipe every visible surface, vacuum floors and couches and chairs, sweep and mop the tile floors, and they are quick and friendly. This is for a 2300 sf 3/2 plus computer room. And they sweep and hose down both front and back porch. WELL worth every penny! She told us "we are expensive but we do a good job" so I was thinking $150 or so, so when she told me $80 I said NO problem!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

In my area, $15 an hour is about standard. More if you hire a service like Merry Maids.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I have an individual who works on her own - she has cleaned for me for many years. I currently pay her $90 to clean every two weeks - my house is about 2500 square feet. I provide supplies. She does the routine cleaning -floors, bathrooms, kitchen cleaning, dusting, etc. - no picking up clutter kind of thing. No laundry, changing beds, etc. - though sometimes I'll have clean sheets laying on the bed unmade and she will make it. She doesn't do things like pull out all the furniture cushions and vacuum - any of that deeper kind of cleaning. Though she would do anything like this if I asked her to. I think she does a nice job - she takes pride in her work - leaves things looking very nice when she is done. I have had other people in the past who weren't so good about this - like they didn't look around and see if everything looked nice - towels hanging neatly, etc. She's overall a nice person and she has the run of my house when no one is home and I've never had a problem with anything. This is obviously really important if the person is there while you're away at wrok.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I pay an independent lady $80 every 2 weeks for a 2600 sf home. That includes all basic cleaning. I provide the supplies.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I pay $55 every two weeks in NC. This is for basic cleaning, but I find I have to go clean specific areas myself. She cleans the floors and bathrooms and does light dusting, and straightening.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I had to just let go of my cleaning lady :( since my husband and I separated and I need to watch every cent now that I am paying for everything on my own. But...I paid $80 for everyother week and have a 1500 sq. foot home. She would wash the sheets and towels and make the beds - no other laundry. If I wanted something beyond the basic cleaning she would always do it. I'm going to miss having her and might have to get a roomba to help out.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I pay a couple $95 every two weeks. We have a large home.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

My home is 2500 square feet and my cleaning lady comes every 3 weeks and spends 4 hours and charges $120. She's awesome.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Look in the yellow pages and get a telephone estimate from several services. Find out what is they do and don't do, whether or not they are bonded, etc. Get as much information as possible about what is cusomary for your area before you interview in person. You will have a better handle on what you want to pay for.

Check under Housecleaning Services, Maid & Butler Services or any other similar heading. You can't be sure where the company or person paying for the add may have asked to place it.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Oh, our cleaner also brings their own supplies, right down to the vacuum cleaners and carpet spot cleaners. They cleaned the oven, microwave, all ceiling fans, wood blinds, swept the porches and hosed them down, washed most of the windows, wiped down ever surface and moved things off of the counters/shelves/dressers so that they could clean under them and the knicknacks themselves.

I am HIGHLY impressed with the level of service we were provided, and at $80 bimonthly it is a steal.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Michelle, you have a great cleaning service! I had one cleaner who came with 2 other gals and they did a great job and used all their own equipment. I learned that I preferred them to use my vacuum as we have allergies and some of their clients had cats and dogs.

Does anyone have a cleaning person to recommend in the Raleigh area? My cleaning lady is going back to school and I am afraid I may lose her soon. Thanks in advance!

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I have an independant lady who comes in once a week: reliable as clockwork. She uses my supplies but brings her own vacuum (she doesn't like my Kirby - but neither do I!). She mops, dusts ceiling and corners with an extension duster, does ceiling fans, all floors (even the laundry room where the cat pan is), runs the vacuum over my drapes and cornices, wipes down kitchen cabinets, does the microwave, pulls off the sofa and chair cushions and vacuums (a must with my DH - Messy Marvin - two cats and a dog), polishes the wood tables, vacuums cat hair from the vertical blinds, and every week she takes a room, pulls furniture away from walls and vacuums along the baseboards. She loves my pets and lets the dog out on his leash if the weather is nice. And asked for $45 a week. I upped it to $50 myself and plan another raise soon - she is worth every penny!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hi Maureen, no, she only works in our subdivision (Rancho El Dorado) in Maricopa. And she has stopped taking on new clients right now, she can't keep up with all the new clients who call her! She said she is trying to hire more help but she is very picky about who she hires. I wish I could loan her out to you, she is outstanding. They are actually coming here in a few hours, I feel like a little kid waiting for a birthday party!

Robin, you got a good one too. I never had a house cleaner before, but Rosario and her team are like TiVo; I didn't know what I was missing until I got it!

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I was lucky to get someone to come on short notice. Classic Cleaners brought 4 people, stayed about an hour, did K floor, great room floor, and bathroom floors. Vacuumed and dusted everything. Did NOT do windows, laundry, or pick up. We have more than 3K sq. ft. Charge was $75; I gave them a $20 tip.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hi! I don't frequent this forum, so please forgive me if I forget to check back. I am just having a lazy Saturday and have been 'all over the map' today. lol I used to work for cleaning companies and actually kind of miss the work. I have often wondered about maybe doing it again, but on the side, as I currently am working a full time job. I was wondering what to charge. A great neighbor of my moms used to clean homes, and she charged $10 per hour. But when I think of how much work you could do in say, two hours, $20 doesn't seem like that much cash to receive for all of the effort. Is it just me?? I notice that some of you pay $15 per hr, which sounds a bit better. I've also heard that some cleaning people charge per room. Does that still happen anywhere?? Thanks!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Right now $60 for weekly cleaning, her supplies and my vacuum. 3200 sf 4br/3ba house in the midwest. I've paid up to $85 per week in the past. Unfortunately, and I've gone through about 5 women, none have done a really great job, but my expectations may be too high. I specifically want the bathroom and kitchen floors to be nicely done but, particularly the bathrooms always still seem to have my husband's hair on the floors. Everyone just mops or vacuums, doesn't really get the job done. But I've decided for $60 which is the bargain price the current person is charging, I'll live with it and do some of it myself.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Most good cleaning people(like myself) can do what will take you one or two days in about four or five hours. Thats hard work, concentration and dedication. Going rate up here in Canada (Calgary Alberta) 25 to 30 dollars an hour. Basically, if you only pay half decent, expect half decent service and so on. I work so hard at cleaning other people's homes, I have no energy left to clean my own family's. I need a maid! lol Ask lots of questions about their service and be specific about your expectations, don't settle for so-so because there are quality cleaners out there, like moi.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I have a 3,000 square foot home and have someone come in once a month. She charges $60. She does bathrooms (we have three...only two get heavy use), floors (carpet, tile and hardwoods), windows (inside only), dusting, and usually does some other cleaning "project". I do not have her do laundry or pick stuff up. Mind you my house is very organized and looks clean at first glance when you walk in, but she does the hard stuff I hate. I LOVE her. She is a mother and does this while her kids are at school.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I also have a cleaning business in Calgary,Ab, and I charge 25-30/hr. I agree with CleanFetish, you get what you pay for. I've never had a complaint and I work hard and fast. I get lots of referrals from my 'happy' clients. I also need a maid! lol.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

$17 hour, 2hr minimum.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I paid a maid service MOLLY MAIDS to do a complete cleaning of my home, dusting, vacuuming and mopping the kitchen floor.

Cost was $95.00 for the service and if I had contracted the service monthly it would have been $70.00 a visit.

I was very dissapointed in the cleaning of the bathrooms. The cleaners they sprayed onthe shower fixtures was never rinsed off now was touched by a rag.

As of that day no more maid services for us.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Good evening to all.
I am an owner of a residential house cleaning company. I do all the cleaning myself, as the company is only a year old. I charge by the size of the house, which in my area runs anywhere from $70-120 a clean for both weekly and biweekly. I dont charge more for the first clean, just the normal fee. I use my own products and supplies except for the vacuum. If a client wants me to use thier product that is fine as long as they have it available. I dont do laundry, clean blinds or windows, and i dont clean ceiling fans. I will do extra cleaning here and there if a client ask for it. I have a satisfaction guranteed, so if a client is not happy i return to get the job done right. Just a little information to let you know what different cleaners do for their price.

I'm the property manager at a local apartment complex and I recently hired someone to come in and clean our carpets and upholstery and I found them online at: http://www.localcleaningcompanies.com/ . I was very happy with the response I received from them.

I'm sure you may be able to find out if they hire cleaners.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

In Racine, WI, we pay our cleaning lady $48 per week for four hours, but there are cheaper services available. She's fabulous -- a real pro who takes great pride in her work. It took me a year to find her. I've always been leery of services and have gone by recommendations from people I trust so I can give her a key. It's so wonderful to come home every Wednesday to a clean house -- she even manages to get all the Persian cat hair off the furniture and carpeting, stairs included.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Help! Does anyone have an honest, thorough maid who would like to work for a nice lady, ME! LOL! We're in Dallas? The last two housekeepers I tried just did not clean well at all. It was a total waste of money AND damage to our oriental rug! Kat123

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

We have two cleaning ladies that clean weekly for us and receive $120 for a 3300 sq ft house, 4BR, 5 bath, plus finished basement. They only vacuum the basement.

We have a new Oriental rug and new hardwood floor in the dining room. they do not clean the dining room. I've seen them use a damp rag on my Kittinger furniture (nearly had a heart attack), and they will not get down on their hands and knees to clean a floor.

Saying that, you get what you pay for. We pay our cleaning ladies decently and I believe they do 80% of our weekly cleaning. They are honest, and that counts for an awful lot.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Over the years, twice we started using cleaning services. Both times they charges about double for the first time cleaning. Is this standard?

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I am amazed at the low fees! Of course, cost of everything is high in DC/Va metro area. DD has used private cleaners, average fee $100+ for 4 hours which covered vacuuming completely carpeted 3500 sqft, surface dusting, thoroughly cleaning 3 baths, kitchen included mopping and washing cabinet fronts and stove top. No windows, no oven cleaning, no closets cleaned, no picking up, no bed making, etc. She switched to a maid company, same cost but she can depend on them to show up! They also do a bit of straightening up (gathering toys into one area, and putting books and newspapers together). She also likes the fact that they are bonded.

Co-workers tell me $100 is now a very good price for a half-day cleaner.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I do not know if it is standard, but I can understand the practice. The first time in is going to be the longest for the cleaners as they are unfamiliar with your home, they may be coming into a house that has not been cleaned regularly, etc., etc. After a while, they take less and less time. Things done weekly are not as dirty as items cleaned less often, so the work is faster. Also, the routine gets easier as the cleaning team becomes familiar with your home.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I charge $15 per hour with a 4 hour min. You choose how many hours and give me a list of priorties. I start at the top of your list and clean till you run out of time.Im a toothbrush cleaner. My houses are spit shined. The cleaner your house is when I start the farther I get. I think this way is fairer for both of us. I always pick up. Otherwise it doesnt look like I cleaned. If I can tell where it goes I put it away. If not I put it on the dining room table for you to put away. One of my clients told me she feels like she has homework. LOL.

Some houses I just do the kitchen and baths. Other houses I do everything. Wash dishes, clothes and windows. Organize cupboards and closets. Clean out basements, garages, and attics. Blow leaves, weedwhack and pull weeds. Touchup paint woodwork. I like to organize stuff.

First time cleans can take longer because most people dont clean like I do. After I get it really clean then the weekly cleans are just maintenance. After that each time I clean I do a "project".

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I have two different cleaning situations:

In NYC, I pay $12.00 per hour and the cleaning woman comes in 5 days for a couple of hours. She flies in and out.

In CT, we pay $75 per week for about 5 hours. We are in a small town and not many people want to clean.

In neither situation are they particularly good cleaners, that is, I find dust balls under furniture, soap film on shower walls, items put in wrong places, and on and on ad nauseum. Loyal, yes, project oriented yes, basics, not so much.

But, do I want to do it all? A resounding NO!

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I found someone to clean for us after searching a couple of months...a friend of a friend of a friend.

She was very nice, but on the first visit she came in vacuumed, clean one bathroom and mopped the kitchen floor and bathroom floor and was done in 2 hours and charged us $65...our home is a little over 2000sf. Two rooms were "under remodeling" at the time and she didn't do anything in them...:-\

She ended up making more money per hour than I do...and DH threw a fit and said he'd do it instead...lol...he did it twice and I paid him the $65 twice and that's the last I've heard about it...no more maid...no more hubby cleaning... argh!!

I'm back to the drawing board again....LOL

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I am in the midwest. One charged me $75 and wasn't very good. DH was home one day and said she only stayed 2hours...now I know why our 2500 4/2.5 wasn't that clean. Another one charged $80 and it wasn't that clean either (hardwoods had spots still). SO now our house still looks bad, but atleast I am not paying for it to look bad. I would love to find someone good who charged under $20 a hour.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I'm outside Boston... I have always paid double for the first cleaning when I switch people or services. I have had a cleaning person for over 20 years now. (no, not the same one all that time!). Some I've gotten rid of quickly, others I've been sad to lose. I've typically gotten mine through word of mouth and recommendations from others. I have a 4000+ 5 bdrm, 4 bath house, finished basement, and in home office. She does not straighten up (unless one of the kids hasn't done their room well). We have a stragithening up eveing before the cleaner arrives. I use to have the cleaner do this but after spending many hours trying to find things they put in the "wrong" places, we decided it was better to have the house "ready" for her!

She does most everything. Changes bed linens and tosses them in the wash. Doesn't really "do" the laundry, but ddoes keep the washer/dryer going with the bedding while here and tosses in all her cleaning rages before she leaves. I supply everything she uses. Shes's here about 4-5 hours in total. She asked for $80 to start with and I've bumped her up to $110... still a great deal as the one I tossed out prior to her would stay for about 2 hours and wanted $125 to do a p-poor job.

My theory is to pay them more than they ask for,not tons more, but a bit more, and make them feel appreciated... and they will do most anything for you! She has offered to clean my house for free for each referal she gets hired at. Shes taken on three of my neighbors, but I don't feel I can have her work for a day for me without paying her,.s o I have still paid her even when seh's said not to for these three. Same theory... keep her happy, she's worth keeping around as long as I can. She's Brazailian and plans to move back soon, but has promised to get me a friend of hers who will take over and do as good of a job... I hope she does...

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I clean homes in a somewhat rural area of WA state. I charge 20 per hour, 3 hour min. and this is fairly standard pricing in my area. I may not fly through a house but that is because I take time and care to leave my clients with a thouroughly clean home. I believe in getting those details and hard to reach spots with a toothbrush because isn't that the stuff a client really doesn't want to do herself. If a person wants a more generalized quicky clean I of course accomidate that but most people like to pay for extra time to have the nitpicky stuff done yhat makes a house look spotless. I also never say no to a task. Weeding, raking, outside skylight cleaning? I will do it all and I think that is appreciated- a handywoman. Anyway, you get what you pay for. If I received $10 PH I would do a half assed job. Maid work may seem menial but it is a luxury and if you respect and pay your housekeeper right you can breathe easier and trust better the woman who is in your space.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I am in the midwest (Northwest Indiana) and pay $85 for a 2700 square foot house, although they do not clean my office. When the owner comes they do a terrific job, when she does not they just don't put the time in, she usually stays two hours (two people). Someone mentioned to me that they usually include a tip. I typically have only done this at year-end. Do you leave a tip consistently?

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Had a wonderful man (yes, that's right a man) who cleaned my house for several years. I gave him several raises and was paying him $100 for a 3,000 SF home at the end. DH was downsized and unfortunately David was one of the first luxuries to go. I always gave him a Christmas bonus of $100 in appreciation of his hard work. Wish I could afford help again!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Does anyone worry about their valuables being stolen? That's the only concern I have. Otherwise I'd have a cleaning service come in immediately. Was thinking about using Merry Maids. Anyone have experience with them?

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I don't worry about having anything stolen that but I've had the same woman cleaning for me for over ten years and she was recommended by a reliable source in my neighborhood. I'm at work when she's here - nothing has ever been damaged, stolen, etc. She does a very nice job. I pay $90 - about 2700 sqft house. She just does this on her own. I've had a few people over the years - always people working on their own - never Merry Maids or that kind fo chain.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

>>>"I am considering maid service on a bi-weekly basis... I work full time and I am tired of spending an entire day cleaning."

Please keep your quote in mind as I reply. Go about it in another order...say you clean the dirty, sometimes absolutely filthy homes of other people, five days a week, eight to ten hours a day. Now, what would you charge to clean your home?

Just another way of looking at it!

Esclipse

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I really don't understand what your question is esclipse. If I were to charge myself to clean my own home I'd charge what the going rate is for a good cleaner. Some of these women say they only pay 10 bucks an hour? That is crazy! You hear them complaining about finding a good cleaner, no wonder if that is all they are willing to pay. To clean a house well it is worth far more then 10 bucks an hour. It's not like cleaning your own house where you can take a break, sit down, have a cup of coffee or take a phone call from a friend or for that matter overlook certain things or do a 'slackass' job. When I clean a house I am working from the minute I get there right till the job is done. I don't expect to be payed for breaks.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I just found an invoice blowing down the street. In a neighborhood where most houses are new and most cost almost exactly $230,000 a professional cleaner who supplies everything, vacuum, rags, chemicals and labor is billing $12.50 per hour.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

$10/hour is spare change. My former boss lived in a small town in Kansas and they paid their cleaning service $30 for once a week!!! You would never find this in Wisconsin, so I suppose it depends on where you live.

Going rate where I live is $50-$65/hour PER PERSON. If the cleaning crew is two people, that's $100 hour or more. And, you don't always get what you pay for. I paid a girl $125 for a first cleaning, and she said she doesn't move rugs, she doesn't move knick-knacks, she doesn't clean blinds. I said, what DO you do? How on earth can you clean your floors without moving throw rugs? I've never heard of anything so absurd in my life.

The first time they cleaned, they did a decent job except that they drained all dirty water in my bathtub which we later had to snake out because they plugged it up. They left soot at the bottom of my tub and never told me. Of course, I had to move all the throw rugs and clean there myself. They never polished my dining room table. How ridiculous. She told me they'd be there 3 hours and they were there for an hour and a half. That calculates to over $80/hour.

Unfortunately, I haven't found anyone that cleans as good as I do.

Best advice I can give is go by word of mouth, never hire out of the yellow pages. You never know what you are going to get, and anyone off the street can qualify for a cleaning job provided you don't mind cleaning. I'm not knocking anyone who does this for a living, it's hard work, and I do think that any person getting paid for cleaning deserves far more than $12.50/hour. I think that's insulting to pay so little for such back breaking work. I wouldn't mind paying the extra money for someone who can do a thorough cleaning.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hi
I have been reading this thing for some time. I find it interesting as to what people pay in the various areas in the US.

I have a cleaning service and to those of you who pay $10 or $12.50 per hour should be ashamed of yourselves. This is hard work!!! 30 years ago I worked for a service in Highland Park Il and the fee was $38 per hour times 2. We, as cleaners, were paid $7.50. That was 30 years ago! They only hired guys as the houses were way too big for 2 women. We had to haul in these commercial scubbing machines through the snow drifts. These people would just call a towing service instead of paying for a plow service. I hated it and quit. I have been cleaning for people since I was 9. I went off to school getting a Master's in French, sold Real Estate, and had a Hair Salon. I, was just, tired of the day to day and needed to be away from people. Cleaning house was something which gave me great staisfaction. It always has. I am now going to be 54 in June. I am $$$ and I don't care!
I, have walked into leaking toilets, ice dams, ice makers , where the thing was shot and the list goes on and on. When my clients return, the house is the same as when they left. I just pay to have everthing repaired so they can walk into the house as though they had never left. I even buy all of the food to re-stock the fridge when they arrive. How can U do anything more? Most of my people have at least 2 other homes. I have a 3 year waiting list and charge $250.00 to $400.00. They don't care, as I, know how to work the alarm and take care of everthing when they are at another house.

Just pay!

Great thread--very eye-opening!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

From 2003 to 2 months ago I paid $70 a visit (used to have them come 2x a month; now that I'm not working it's once a month). Due to the rise in gas prices they just went up to $80 and I'm not complaining! The most important thing is I trust them to be in our house (and maybe it's me but I'm leery of those maid companies). 4 people arrive with their own mops and vacuum cleaners. I provide stuff like garbage bags, paper towels, Windex, 409 Cleaner, polish, Comet, and those wet towel things they put on their mop to do the floors. They clean 2 levels (they charge an extra $20 to do our finished basement) which include 4 bedrooms and 3-1/2 baths in one hour. I live in a large metro area so I'm pleased and it is well worth it. They came highly recommended by a former boss and associate--I think that's the best referral and the safest way to find good cleaners.

Does anyone have a cleaner they would recommend in the Baltimore (Bel Air) Maryland area? Thanks.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Folks, don't forget that if you do have a regular cleaning service, most people - or most people that I know - also give their cleaners a Xmas/holiday bonus. A little something extra goes a long way.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I pay $150 weekly for 5600 sq ft house for basic cleaning, picking up, letting pets in/out. Very trustworthy! Near Tampa FL. Big bonus at xmas. Is this a good price???

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

We pay about $15/hr. Our service does basic dusting/vacuuming, mop floors and will clean bathrooms, straighten papers, swap towels out or put a load of laundry into the dryer/washer, dishes into the dishwasher, etc. The services done are based more on the amount of time, so for example, if dusting/vacuuming, or a special project took the entire allotted time, nothing else would get done. However, normally the kitchen, dusting, vacuuming, and one deep clean for a bathroom get done every two weeks.

It's unfair to chastise people because their cleaners are not charging what some of you consider fair wages. I'm a business owner myself, and if I charged too much higher than my competition, I'd be out of business quickly; cleaning services are no different. My cleaning service charges what they charge. I'm happy to pay, and I understand what services are going to be performed within the allotted time. If I wanted higher levels of service, I'd be charged more (if I could find a service to meet those standards, which might be difficult.) In my area, a 2200-2500 sf house is usually about $70-75 biweekly.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I've had the same person for many years.
She charges $10 an hour but I gave her a $2 an hour raise.
She never asked for it but she cleans my daughter's apartment for me also.
She has been with me so long she's like a member of the family.

I mostly just let her do her thing. Once in awhile i'll
leave her a note but not very often.
As for doing the laundry, i'd pay her not to do it.
She did the laundry once for me and my husband wasn't too
thrilled over his pink briefs. I do let her fold the clothes and put them away.

Her husband is an excellent carpenter and works for me
when I need a handyman. He will clean gutters and almost
anything I need him to do. His pay is $15 an hour but when
he was building my gazebo and summer kitchen my husband
gave him a $2 an hour raise because he is so good. We pay
him the same wage for everything.
We feel pretty lucky to have this couple working for us
and are satisfied with what we pay them.

There are a lot of hispanics here in this area that would
work for less but i'd rather stick with the people I have
had for the past 30 years. I wouldn't put them out of a
job just to save a few dollars. I would also trust them with my life.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Let me add to the note I sent before (re: paying $150.00 for a 5600 sq ft houe)/ Altho I trust her dearly, she takes at least 4 cigarette breaks, goes to the bank and also goes thru Dunkin Donuts drive thru on my time, then takes another break at my house to eat what she buys. Including these breaks. she is "working" from about 10 am to 2:30 pm so that is over $25 hr. I somehow feel this is quite alot....do any of you pay anything like this? Keep in mind, I do have pets (shedding). She also brings her daughter w/ her if she needs to watch her.

I feel like I am being taken advantage of? What do you all think?

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hula,

It doesn't seem that you are overpaying so much as you have an unprofessional cleaner. Maybe not in her results, but the multiple, off-site breaks are definitely out of the ordinary.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I live in Richmond, Virginia and my house is just under 2000 sq ft. I had a cleaner come in for 10+ years on a bi-weekly basis, and paid $75 per clean. He would dust, mop, vacuum, and clean bathrooms on a typical day. If I asked, he would clean ceiling fans. He was OK and very reliable. After many years of no problems, he started bringing different people with him. Then, on one occasion, I noticed $200 missing from a box in my bedroom -- he was certain it wasn't his people (although I put it there that morning before I left). A year later, my mother's diamond ring disappeared. While I can't be 100% sure he or his helpers were responsible, that was enough for me. I don't have anyone cleaning now, and I definitely miss it.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

hula... I'm also in Tampa Bay area. My house is 1/4 the size of yours. I pay my lady $40 every two weeks. She scrubs whole house of floors and both bathrooms. Never asked her to do laundry or anything else. She brings her own stuff, never takes a break unless it's at my insistance (seems like she works too hard!).

How many hours does she spend at your house (banking & Donut breaks here...) USPS says breaks every 2.5 hours max with supper break after 5 hours.

Reading your original post, you're paying $150 per week and she's letting pets in and out.. Is she there every day?

Bringing her kid is OK... You're probably not paying your share of taxes for her, so give her a break.

Also... not all cheap and good housekeepers are Latino. Check out recent European (i.e. First generation) Europeans. Lots in the area)

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hello - I pay her $150.00 A DAY - she is actually here WORKING (not counting 4 cigarette breaks, going on errands, etc) 3 hours max. She lets pets in and out if she is near the kitchen door and they want out while she is in there working or on her way out to smoke. It is a weekly job. From reading the responses it seems I am getting taken advantage of!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I used to pay $30 a week for a cleaner who left after 2 hours. It was better than no help. At least it encouraged me to tidy up before his visits. He did floor mopping, vacuumimng, dusting. I would like to hire someone to do nasty chores like scrubbing the bathtub, cleaning the stove and fridge, washing walls. I have no problem with laundry, towels and changing beds. Those are things I prefer to do myself.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I have a 6800 sq ft house. Included large home theater room, large playroom, 5 br each with own bath--MB bath large with lots of glass. When my cleaning lady comes, my house is 100% picked up ( not easy as I have 3 school age kids ) They are excellent ( it's a mom and daughter )and spend about 4 hrs at the house. They use my supplies except vacuum. They clean the entire house but no linen change or laundry or windows. I have them come once a month and I pay $265. I have been feeling that I have been overpaying and have begun to look for a new service. Don't mind paying what is fair but I feel this is an excessive price for my area. Any thoughts on the price. Again, they do a good job.

You are being taken advantage of, you need to find someone that is more focused. Promise me that you will. Okay?

Regarding the other comments, I found it hard to ascertain what is an acceptable wage by area. So few of you chose to say what state you live in. I imagine that prices vary from west coast to east coast, by urban versus rural, etc.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

My housekeeper cleans every 2 weeks and charges $100 per visit (I have a 3,300 sq ft home). I provide all the cleaning supplies, which I like because I can't stand the thought of her using vacuums, mops, and towels to clean my house that she just used on someone else's dirty house (yuck!).

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

hula, my first thought when I read your post about your cleaner going to the bank, donut shop, etc, was "who is liable...?" If she's "on the clock", then there could be a liability issue if something happens. I think I'd have a rule that the banking and snack getting is done before or after work. Bringing something to eat doesn't bother me so much as going out to get it on the boss's time. There's no need for that. As far as her breaks, kid and the like is something for you to decide if you want. Again, there's a liability issue if the kid gets hurt. I'm not sure how to read your posts as to how far you trust her. If she does these things, maybe she's not the most reliable and may cause some trouble in the instances above. If you trust her completely outside of the shortcomings, then maybe I'd just suggest a rule change or two to tighten things up. Face it, most jobs would consider that unreasonable. If it were an occasional thing, that she needed to get to the bank before 3 and wouldn't finish work before then, that's different than constantly doing this. If she ran out of supplies and needed to go get some, or needed to get some medication that she unexpectedly ran out of (on a unique situation) I'd have no problem with that. But I think the items you listed are a bit unreasonable. Or at least she should be docked for the time.

I'd like to find someone to do maybe a couple hours every couple weeks. I don't want them doing laundry, but more to clean bathroom, kitchen floors and counters and maybe be doing some windows either a window or two each time or one time doing it as a project. I don't know a lot of people who have housekeepers so referrals aren't many. I too am skeptical of the "big box" cleaning firms.

One thing though, I'd rather not give a key. I don't have much for valuables or anything it's just that I'd feel more comfortable being there while they're working. Not to look over their shoulder but I don't like people in my house when I'm gone. (Been that way since a couple burglaries!) I also think it would give a chance to communicate better and get input from the cleaner on projects that need to be done. I would think good cleaners would be amenable to this. I'm in MN (Twin Cities area) and have no idea what rates would be fair.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hula: I have been cleaning homes and small businesses for years, and am currently in the process of starting my own organic, all-natural cleaning business in the Boston area. It sounds like you are definitely being taken advantage of, or just plain paying too much.

We all need to take breaks, but there are ways for your cleaning woman to do this without costing you money. I do my best to schedule my cleaning jobs around the lunch hour; if I'm doing a job that will run into that time, I'll talk to my client about taking a lunch break off site, off the clock, and for a predetermined amount of time (I usually take thirty minutes).

Cleaning is hard work, and it's understandable that people need an occasional break during a long, hard job. However, there's a huge difference between making an investment of taking 5-10 minutes to eat an energy bar and drink some water so you'll do your job well, and taking fifteen minutes here and there to smoke cigarettes and go to the grocery store.

My guess is that your cleaning lady doesn't think you notice what she's doing and is trying to make it seem as though your house is so filthy that it takes all day long to clean, although I suppose it's equally possible that she's just a disorganized mess. My suggestion to you is as follows:

1. The next time she comes to your home to clean, make a point of timing when she's working and when she's taking a break (it sounds as though you may have done this already, but if your three-hour figure is just an estimate you should be sure to verify that).

2. Assess how much time she's spending doing each, and try to determine what you're paying her per hour of actual work based on your findings.

3. Schedule a time to sit down and talk to her about her behavior. Try to figure out what's going with her. Is she wildly disorganized, or is she scamming you? And if she's disorganized, is that the kind of person you want to have cleaning your home?

4. After you talk with her, decide whether she's worth your trouble. Assuming your figures are accurate, $50/hour for home cleaning is an astronomical price to pay, even if she's licensed/bonded/insured (is she?). I charge $18/hour, but once I'm licensed/bonded/insured I'll charge a couple of dollars more per hour. I have no cost complaints from my clients, and I am very firm about what I charge. I do great work, I bring my own cleaning products (which are more expensive than conventional ones), I am extremely knowledgeable about the type of work I do, and the cost of living in Boston is high so the price is expected.

People like your cleaning lady make me incredibly angry. As a couple of people have mentioned above, cleaning is very hard work. I green clean homes because I'm passionate about the environment, I love the work I do, and I enjoy helping people get organized. Unfortunately, your cleaning lady gives the rest of us a bad name.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I pay our housekeeper $100 for our 6,000sqft home. We are very clean people and everything is picked up and put away before she comes. I usually even strip the beds and put them in the laundry for her. I provide everything (supplies, tools etc). She is typically here about 3-4 hours. We've used her for many years and the children adore her. She is not perfect and my dh seems to find a spot she missed each week, but frankly I work full time and it is a blessing to me to have her.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

We pay $100 a week. She does a great job; arrives at 8:30 (sharp) and typically goes to around 1:30. She's reliable, trustworthy; the kids love her - what more could I ask? Folds laundry, changes linens, but no windows (I never asked). Oh, and we pay her for her occasional vacation weeks and DH always buys her a big turkey at Thanksgiving and a Christmas bonus. I appreciate her even more because we had a cleaning person in the past who wouldn't even move the dog bowl when cleaning the floor!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I really can't figure this out....I can't seem to find the right person to clean. It doesn't really matter how much I pay them they start out like a ball on fire and then fizzle to a snail's pace. I had a cleaning "team" for about 2.5 years. When they started, I had four kids at home which meant 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and lots of stuff. At the end of our relationship, I had one child home with only 2 bedrooms being used and two baths....when I suggested that we cut down the hours that the worked each week I met with extreme resistance. They couldn't explain why they had previously handled more rooms/clutter/dirt before but still needed 10 hours per week to clean my house. After I brought it up, they solicited a client while cleaning for our construction company and quit. Of course they jacked our client on their hourly rate so I understand that they needed to "go where the money is". Anyway a word of advice for all of you who hire cleaning people...my Dad always told me that your employees could not be your friends. I forgot this nugget of advice and became very indulgent with the two who worked for me. The long and short of this lesson is we are no longer friends, my client has been told that I was unfair and unreasonable(even though we use non-compete agreements) and I am stuck with a really dirty house.

Please God send me someone decent who will work for a reasonable wage........

Take care everyone!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Isn't this entirely regional? We moved from Houston to Northern Michigan last year. In Texas we paid a flat $80 for one day. The cleaning lady brought her mother, and sometimes her mother-in-law, and they could be in and out of our house in two hours. So far, in Michigan, we're doing our own cleaning, but would be interested in hiring somebody. Friends tell us to expect $15-$20/hour.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I'm in NYC, get a cleaner through an agency, and pay $22/hour with a four-hour minimum. I do not know how much goes to the agency and how much the cleaner is paid. Hiring a freelancer/individual directly would cost in the $16-$18/hour range, but it's important to me to have someone who's bonded and to have a number of different people able to fill in if my regular cleaner can't make it.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

In the Massachusetts area it's $30.00 and that's normal. I agree with eteinne. Many people want to pay very little for an entire cleaning. It's insulting. I used to clean for 15 year because I felt it was satisfying work (actually enjoyed it). I found the more generous the client the more I wanted to do for them. Would always try to do one extra unexpected thing for them each time. Those are the people you LIKE to work for. They are willing to pay because they trust you. I've been told that's the most important thing to them. More advice - stay out of their way when they are cleaning!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I would like some input and help in how to interview and advertise for a house keeper. Should I request resumes? What type of questions have you asked when interviewing for someone to clean your house?

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Well I must through my 2 cents in. My house cleaner is my best friend from jr. high. She has been with me since I went back to work 15 yrs ago. She comes every week and does every thing she is here at least 6 hours doing the fine cleaning laundry, blinds windows if they need it. If I mess it up she put it all back. She likes to get paid every 2 weeks at 150.00. She is well worth every penny and more so I dont spend my time cleaning all day. And she has keys to all her houses.

Nanci

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I have my own cleaning business and these are the types of questions I get asked when being interviewed for a new house to clean.

How much do you charge ( hourly or fixed rate)
How long have you been cleaning for.
Do you have references.
How long do you think it will take.
Do you use your own cleaning supplies and vacumn.
Are there certain things that you won't/don't clean.
What time of day can you start.
What type of cleaning supplies do you like to use.
Are you insured/bondable.
Whats your preferred method of pay ( cheque or cash )
Do you take breaks.

There are so many questions you can ask. Also appearance is very important, if the person looks sloppy then I would presume that that is how they cleaned as well.
Sit down the night before you have someone coming over to take a look at your house and write down anything that you think you should ask, concerns etc. Also decide if you would like her to use your own cleaning supplies and vacumn. I will use my own or theirs , it is up to them. As for a vacumn I do prefer to use theirs ( hygeine purposes )and will explain this to them.

As far as the comments about taking breaks above I agree that we all need breaks but it is also depending on the size of the job and the person. I myself do not take breaks in any 3-4 hour jobs I take on. I do smoke but I can surely go without a smoke for those type of hours and also don't want to be smelling of smoke while cleaning. If I ever did decide to take a break I would not expect to be paid for it. I am there doing you a service to which you are paying me hourly ( which is how I charge).
When you do get a cleaner, make sure you are home when she cleans the first few times so you can keep tabs on her habits of cleaning , ie if she does take breaks, if shes doddling or anything else that you may see that you don't care for , or even how she cleans certain things. I'm not saying to stand over her and watch her ever move but once in a while just ' check up ' on her. You can also specify how many hours you would like her to clean for so you can have a set rate each time. If you dont' care for what you see then find someone else that you can be happy with.

I hope this helped :-)

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

We pay $100 per month for 1900 sq feet. They bring their own supplies.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Thanks Sher01...that was very helpful. I was also thinking of during the interview or walk through if she/he cleans whatever you like to have them point out what they see that would need cleaned and on what basis...for example, weekly, monthly etc.....what do you think of this idea?

Also Nancii, how wonderful to have a friend and someone you know and trust that can help you out and I am sure it helps her as well to get paid for helping you! Does she work approx. 6 hours per week or is that for the total time during the two weeks?

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I prefer to have the cleaner use my own supplies. Hygene reasons and dangerous chemicals being of concern.

I tip at Christmas usually doubling what I pay normally. Recently it went up to $120 for 4 hours 2 people. This is NOT a service... I WILL NOT use a cleaning company EVER again. I got ripped off ($135 for one person... 4 hours, 10 years ago) AND they stole from me. Turnover was dismal.

IMHO it is not a crime to pay someone $10 per hour for cleaning. It is, in many cases, money under the table. There are those who only get paid $15 at a skilled profession, working with metal, bent over a hot fire for hours exposed to metal filings and the health problems in later life.

Yes, cleaning is hard work, but most can turn their hand to it.

Good luck on finding the hands that do a good job and have pride in their work.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Yes that is a great idea jasmine77. That way they will know exactly what you want done and also you can ask them questions on how they go about doing things. If you have any other questions feel free to email me :-).

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I thought you all would like my point of view... I have been independently cleaning in MO (Springfield and now Kansas City) full time (two homes per day), for the past four years, and absolutly love and take pride in my work! I don't charge by the hour because I've heard of some bad stories of cleaning girls not doing much, however charging for 5 hours of work. I always do an initial bid, and stick to my price. I try to stay out of my clients' way (coming when they are at work or running errands) for both of our benefits-it really makes it easier on the housekeeper if you are not there. I do all bathrooms, floors, kitchen, wash sheets for some clients, wash dishes for some clients, tidy-up, it always smells and looks great when they get home. I am focused and detail oriented. I feel I am reasonable and well worth my price...i.e. a 4B, 2.5BA home is currently $90-$100. Proud to say all of my clients in the past four years have referred me to their friends and neighbors! I love what I do...everyone should love their job this much!!

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Just wanted to correct a common misconception re: cleaning companies. Most companies are actually referral agencies and are just hiring out independent contractors so they typically do not run background checks or have any say as to how the work is performed or carry workers' compensation insurance. The nationally-known companies have their own employees who come fully insured and pay all of the associated employment taxes. Obviously these companies charge much more (+/- $80/hr. for a crew of 2 people) but you are paying for security. Personally, I would not hire anyone that I did not at least know through a friend/neighbor and typically will use a fully-insured company so I don't have to worry about someone hurting themselves in my home, etc. The cleaners who have posted here obviously take pride in their work and definitely are not the norm in my area.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I'm a college student- and have been cleaning houses for over a year. I charge $12 an hour for 2 1/2 hours - and that is just a flat rate...whatever they want me to do in that time is up to them.

I'm planning on raising my rates because everyone is telling me that I don't charge enough. (Not my customers-- friends!) I was thinking charging $45-$50 for 2 1/2 hours. I use their products -- but they tell me what products to use where and how they want everything cleaned. I am NEVER late.

Do you think that those rates are fair? (I live in the midwest)

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Where in the Midwest do you live? I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I for the first time a considering having someone clean my condo. Only thing, I don't know of anyone or have any referrals in my area of Central NJ, Jersey shore area. I saw an ad on Craigs list for 2 1/2 hrs. $40 or 4 hours $75. I have a 2 bdr. 2 1/2 ba, large kitch, where I mainly want those worked on and vacume, mop, and dust. Does anyone think that can be done in 2 1/2 hours? Just my dad and I living there. If anyone knows of someone in that area, let me know. My brother in Miami has a cleaning lady, she does a great job of scrubbing the tiles and counters she stays about 3 hours and charges 50, ten more and does laundry. She never cleans the glass doors though.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

That was my question. I have a maid and wondered if $80 every two weeks is too much for my 1450 sq ft house with 3 br, 2 1/2 baths. I guess it is not too much. This area has a very high cost of living and little unemployment. Labor in these types of jobs is scarce and it is expensive. The lady that cleans my house is independent, very reliable, legal and honest. She has worked for me for about seven years. I don't get as much out of the cleaning as I should because I am so disorganized with stuff all over the floors of the family room, office, and two of the three bedrooms. (She really only cleans the MB) Everything else is standard. Cleans kitchen and bathrooms, vacuums everywhere possible, dusts and polishes tops of furniture, empties trash and does similar things. When I think of how much I am spending per year, I wonder if maybe I could do it myself to save all that money. I am not so sure of that, so she stays for now.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

i am just starting to go private and will not limit the cleaning but will charge by bids. it depends on what you WANT. I am good. follow sanataion rules as well. rags can end up being the most germiest thing in your house. But for those who only pay 10 an hour and expect so much you make me sick. DO THE WORK YOUR SELF. if you want good pay for it. if its not good fire and rehire. BUT DONT SIT HERE AND BLOG HOW YOU THINK ITS SO UNFFAIR TO HAVE TO PAY 15 AN HOUR OR MORE. AND STOP MAKING COMMENTS ABOUT WELL AT LEAST SHE SPEAKS ENGLISH AND DOES NOT CHARGE VERY MUCH. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURE SELVES. IF THATS NOT RACIST THEN I DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS. PAY. YOU GOTTA PAY FOR THIS TYPE OF SERVICE AND STOP TRYING TO TURN US INTO YOUR SERVANTS WE ARE PAYED TO DO A JOB FOR YOU AND THATS IT. OTHER WISE SIT IN YOUR OWN FILTH YOU LAZEY PIGS.

AND ITS QUITE ILEGAL TO GET PAID UNDER THE TABLE. SO WOOOOOSH WHEN THE TAX MAN COMES AND ARRESTS THE CLEANER ARE YOU GONNA TAKE CARE OF THEM?????? REGAURDLESS 10 AN HOUR IS WAY TO CHEAP. UNDER OR OVER THE TABLE. DONT EVER EXPECT A CLEANER A DO THAT FOR YOU SO YOU CAN PAY LESS. YOU LITTLE BRAT.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Oh my!! What an education this thread has been! I am a registered nurse who works for a decent wage (not working now due to injury), who has thought many times of doing a small amount of cleaning- I like housework- it gives me a satisfaction when I can see a job getting done. I like to work at a steady/rhythmic pace- it is calming. I do a job well. I would be on time, would not steal, would do a thorough job.
There is no possible way I would work for $10-$15 an hour, nor would I expect to pay someone that amount for a well done job.
Where I live, in northern Wyoming, in a small town, $25 an hour is about the least amount you will find. $35 is common. A fair deal for someone who is taking care of the biggest investment you have. (unless you are an investor.
As I read your posts, I was mentally thinking of who I would and would not work for! Some of you seem fair, some seem to think that cleaning a home is pretty lowly.
I definately agree that Merry Maids is horrible- I found that out when I moved into my condo that I use in the winter in Texas- what a scam- they sprayed a cleaner on the walls and pretended to wipe it with a cloth. Nope- I wanted the walls WASHED!!
Well, ladies and gentlemen (all except the prior 2 posts to mine), I will just have to see what I will do in the future- you have let me see just how you respect the housekeepers you have- or do not respect.....
Thank you for the reading.
And Melanie- you are correct to a degree about some of the people- but to express yourself in such a nasty outburst certainly would not want me to hire a person with your explosive, angry ways!
Maybe I'll just have to be a nurse- and a nurse only!
Wow.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Oh- just my 2 cents- having someone come into your home who has used their own vacuum in other homes is just creepy! Think about where that vac might have been- the house that has dogs/cats that has a few fleas. Some of these fleas have been vacuumed up, are now in your living room, where they can crawl out of the bag onto your floors. The flea eggs get blown straight through most vac bags! Those rags that are being used might just have cleaned up some cat/dog/bird/?? poop- they were rinsed out, and are now being used to wipe your countertops.
That other rag was used to wipe the seat of somebody's toilet earlier this morning.
Do you see the housekeeper washing their hands before they clean your kitchen surfaces, where you prepare food tonight? What was the housekeeper doing just before she put the clean sheets on your bed and the clean towels in the bathroom- did she just clean the bathroom, including the toilet?
Just a couple things to think about next time you snuggle your face into the pillowcases, dry your face with a towel, or while you are cutting vegetables for tonight's dinner!
Check to see how 'clean' your housekeeper is, personally.
Too much nurse in me, I guess.

In nyc I pay $9.00 an hour to a college student who does washing drying and folds everything well and does some cleaning too. Yes I am happy with the arrangement.
The student is nice and helpful.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I am an independent housekeeper, and it's very interesting to read all your posts.

I was a restaurant manager, but got married and didn't want to work nights and weekends any longer. Before I started, I did some research, and found a website (sorry, I didn't keep it on file to post) that was devoted simply to people's complaints about their housekeepers.

The number one complaint was unreliability.

The number two complaint was that the person would start out really well, and then the service would deteriorate over time.

The first, I think, is due to something I've observed, and that is that two basic types of people start cleaning houses. People like me, who have other skills they could market but prefer this career for a variety of reasons, and people who are cleaning houses because they have a hard time holding down any other type of job because they have issues in their life or are simply irresponsible.

The second is sort of a human nature thing. Most housekeepers charge by the job. They'll bid your house at a certain price. The first few visits or so tend to be longer, because they are "catching up" with all the little things. Then the amount of time necessary to keep up tends to lessen. After that, it becomes really easy to put off the little detail things that need to be done every so often. Pretty soon, those little detail things aren't being done at all. Because, the faster you get done with a house the more houses you can fit in a day, or the earlier you can be done with your day and go home.

So, I charge by the hour. I charge $25, and I am a detail cleaner. I bid a house for the amount of time I think it will take me to dust, vacuum, clean floors, scour bathrooms, give the kitchen a wipe down, and then I add a little bit more time to do the things that don't need to be done every visit. Dusting ceiling fans, wiping baseboards, cleaning fridges, washing blinds etc. I tell my customers that they are paying me by the hour, so I don't care what I do as long as it is moral and legal! So if they want to push the vac around themselves one week and have me do some ironing or wash some windows instead, it's fine with me. Or they can pay me for extra time to do these things in addition to my normal routine.

If I find myself having to look for things to clean to fill the time, I renegotiate the amount of time I'll be there.

A bit of advice if you're thinking about hiring someone to clean your house...

If they insist that you not be home when they clean, don't hire them. You shouldn't be expected to trust someone you don't know right away.

I don't like services that send a different crew every week. Getting to know a house, and a client's habits are important to do a good job. And you have to figure that the workers a service provides are earning way less per hour than you are paying. Ask yourself how good a job you can expect anyone to do for $8 to $10 an hour. Anyhow, having someone poking through your belongings and into your nooks and crannies is a personal thing...a relationship is important.

Be specific with a new housekeeper about what you want done and what you don't want done, and don't hesitate to tell them (nicely) if they aren't doing something the way you like. It's your home after all! Also, if there is something you think they are missing when they clean. We're only human! I had one client who (after a year) diplomatically asked me to be sure and dust the small platform that ran between the legs of her dining room table. I can't imagine why I never noticed that it was there, but I hadn't.

Remember that lighting plays a part. I always try, when my schedule permits, to vary the time I clean a house, at least once in a great while. Different times of the day bring different lighting, and all of a sudden I'll see things that need cleaning that I never noticed before.

If you hire someone who charges by the hour, keep in mind that you will get the best value for your money if she's not spending your nickle to pick things up before she can dust or vacuum. I tell my clients that I don't mind putting baby's toys in the chest or washing dishes so I can clean the sink, but that I'll get less actual cleaning done during the time they're paying me for if I have to do such things.

$20/hr. The cleaner is very energetic, efficient, can reorganize the cupboards properly and such, and she uses her own supplies. But she doesn't detail clean - I haven't asked her to.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Rachelellen you sound just like my cleaning lady that I have had for 15 years. I pay her $100.00 and she comes every other week for 5 or 6 hours. I have attended her children's weddings and consider her a part of the family. I always try to have everything picked up before she gets here so she can spend her time actually cleaning. She uses my supplies. Sometimes I am here and sometimes I am gone. If I am gone when she leaves then there is always a note outlining what she did and if she ran out of any cleaners. You are so right about having the same person because we have developed a relationship that makes us both happy. She has never asked for a raise because I always give her a raise at the beginning of the year with her Christmas bonus. She is just the best and I don't know what I would do without her. Great thread, Andrea

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I need some feedback: I have someone come once every two weeks. I pay $60 each time she comes (about 2 -2.5 hrs. of cleaning). It is a 600 sq ft. studio apt. and she bacically cleans floors, vacuums one 8' x 10' area rug, cleans bathroom, kichen, floors, sinks, oven (does not usually clean cabinets and, when I check them, they are usually dirty, nor does she often clean the outside of cabinets, which are white, so easy to see dirt. It takes her about 2 - 2.5 hrs (again, for $60 for the job). I live in NYC. Is this too much? Please advise.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Here in Michigan we charge $20.00 per hour. A basic colonial with 2 1/2 baths, dining room, living room, family room, etc.. would be $80-$100 (4-5 hours).

Customer provides all the cleaning products and the vacuum. I agree it would be gross to use the same vacuum at different houses.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hi,

I am shocked that this thread is still going! I would be interested as to what type of vac U provide to your house cleaning help? Most people purchase their vacs a K-Mart or Sears and don't puchase a vac which works in their home. If U grew up with wall 2 wall your mother had an upright and your house is full of area rugs and have all of the hardwood. U normally have an upright and that is worthless in your house. When was the last time U used it? Is there tension on the belt, is it even there and has broken, is the bag full, or if a canister, is the bag full and the hose half plugged up? U don't use it so U would have no idea. You have to check the bags as with most cleaning help as long as the motor runs they use it and then the motor burns out. Fair warning.

I bring my own vacs and I have 3 which are the same. 1 for houses with pets, one for people with allergies, and 1 for just general use. They were $2,100 each and no one posting on this forum would spend that type of $. They just want to get by as cheaply as they can.

I do have more to say on this subject but have to leave.

Eteinne

Keith - no, it isn't too much, but if you want her to clean something specific such as the inside or outside of the kitchen cabinets, you have to tell (ask) her. Nicely.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I used to clean for a couple, a very large house with 3 bedrooms, kitchen, 2 living rooms, formal living room, dining room and 2 1/2 baths. I was supposed to do light cleaning, dusting, mopping. They did their own laundry and I didn't do windows. Construction was going at the time and at first I wasn't cleaning one of the bedrooms. There is a computer room, but it was hard to clean as their stuff was still in there that wasn't put away from the construction. It wasn't a dirty house, but fairly easty to clean. I occasionaly moved the furniture to get under it. At least one person or the whole family was there while I was cleaning. They decided to let me go so that their 18 year daughter could earn money. I charged $60.00 for the job every week. I don't know if that was too much, but they paid it. I was asked to dust the top of the refrigerator as well. Does anyone think this was too much. I live in KS, but not in the big cities.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Anyone dare quote me a really rough estimate for a private housekeeper to come 5 days a week for a friend of mine? She needs a full all over cleaning once a week on 5900 sqft, 5 bed 4.5 bath. Only three bathrooms and two bedrooms are used daily. Daily she wants (like I have) someone to come in and make beds, straighten, vacuum (like me again, she's cat crazy!) and wipe down the kitchen counters, load dishwasher and wipe down the bathroom vanities. The price she's looking at paying is an "after tax" price meaning she would be providing health insurance, paying taxes and workmans comp. Short story is she is going to hire her as an employee of our medical office (I do this with my housekeeper) and her job duties are cleaning her house :)

Anyone care to estimate what her take home pay should be per week in a rural area in the south? I know what I have mine paid at but my house is twice as big and we have more animals/mess!

Justin, who'd be greatful if someone could put a dollar figure down!

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

The following message is why you are not safe as a homeowner hiring people to clean who only charge $10-$15-$20 per hour....it is very enlightening....especially the part about making sure anyone you hire into your home carries General Liability Insurance.....and also your tax responsibilities.

In years past, you would often overhear conversations in places like beauty salons, community clubhouses, cocktail parties and fancy restaurants that would start something like this...
"Wow, I just found the best housecleaner and...they are really cheap!"
This conversation was usually one of the ladies (or gentlemen) boasting about the cleaning person they had just hired to clean their home and this home was usually located in a high-income neighborhood because, after all, years ago only the wealthy could afford hired helpers in the home.
Well...times have changed...kind of...
The days of only the wealthy using hired help inside the home are gone! It's not that the wealthier don't use housecleaners any longer, it's the fact that today's average homeowners (especially the two income earner households) are seeking outside help with home maintenance because of time constraints, lack of energy to clean after putting in a 40+ hour workweek, etc. The market for independent cleaning contractors has skyrocketed over the past 10-15 years!
Along with this "boom" in demand has come the "boom" in independent contractors who are working without occupational licenses, general liability insurances and may well lack the experience needed to "safely" clean the many varied surfaces that exist in today's homes.
The industry refers to them as...Trunk Slammers.
When a homeowner (especially those homes where both parents are working full time just to cover expenses) goes looking for help with home maintenance, "price" is always a huge part of the decision on just who will be hired and...there's nothing wrong with that...provided the potential consumer "knows what they are paying for" and..."the possible liabilities they are exposing themselves to" when selecting a cleaning service provider based solely on price.
What liabilities?
When hiring a worker who is working for "under the table" wages that are not going to be reported to the IRS as income, you (technically) become that worker's employer and (technically) you become responsible for income, Medicare, social security and unemployment taxes at the Federal level and, depending on the state you live in, may be responsible (technically) for some of the above...again...at the state level.
When hiring a worker who is working for "under the table" wages that are not going to be reported to the IRS as income, you (most certainly) will be paying for that worker's retirement also...not today but when they retire and realize that they have little or nothing in their Social Security retirement account to live on , they will go on any one of a number of public assistance programs that your hard earned tax dollars (remember them...there the one's you worked for and paid taxes on years ago...) will be paying for.
When hiring an uninsured worker, you become responsible (technically) for any medical expenses for "your employee" should "your employee" become injured while working in your home. In most states, you "should be" paying workman's compensation insurance for "your employee".
When hiring a worker that doesn’t carry general liability insurance, you will assume all liabilities for damage, breakage or theft of anything in your home. This may not sound like much of a liability on your part but...remember we mentioned, "experienced" earlier? Inexperienced people can, and do cause literally thousands of dollars worth of damage to the many new surfaces in today's homes. Things like marble, granite, hardwood flooring, fiberglass tubs.... and the list goes on and on and on.
Oh, one other thing...you are breaking the law by hiring these individuals.
Unwittingly (or maybe knowingly) you have become "complicit" in tax evasion, operating (in most municipalities/states) an unlicensed business and, in some states, operating a business without adequate liability insurance or workman's compensation insurance.
Claiming ignorance of your cleaner's business status will not help. You as the purchaser of services are responsible to investigate the legal status of "any" outside contractor who performs "any" services on your home and you should never be afraid to ask for documentation from those service providers. (Remember the old "Caveat-emptor" phrase...its true!)
"Yeah"...you're saying..."I know all this stuff already and anyway, no one ever gets caught for this kind of stuff!" I say..."Oh Yeah"...a little research on the subject (your Due-Diligence) will quickly reveal that people, often unsuspecting people, are being caught and fined everyday of the week on just these circumstances.
Check with the IRS if you don't believe me.
The whole matter becomes an especially "different" kettle of fish if your worker/employee is also an undocumented alien but...that's for another letter. Makes you wonder...is that $20/$30 difference in rates really worth the risk(s)?
Your money...your decision.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

D. Crichton -- interesting point. However if you are going after housewives making spending money by cleaning houses, you better go after those teenage babysitters too! Especially the ones that work all week, all summer long.

I personally think there is difference between someone who is an "Alice" type housekeeper for the Brady's and someone who spends three hours cleaning your house once or twice a month.

And while you are at it, please remember to go after all the "under the table" plumbers, electricians and hair dressers. And don't forget the kid who cuts your lawn in the summer.

The three people I know that clean homes all have husbands who are gainfully employed. They are looking for extra spending money not to fund their retirement years.

Those people are chump change. If they really want some taxes go after the people in Congress. They don't seem to pay them either.

I know this is the wrong forum, but I couldn't resist this week. Sorry.

You are right...but a housekeeper would be your employee...and would be treated as such...you would provide a W2 at the end of the year.
It's fine that you trust having inexperienced people in your home.......just be aware of what it can cost you in the long run....that is the point.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I am a retired policeman on a limited pension and took up house cleaning after having had a seasonal part time grass cutting business.
It started with a request from a painting client 12 years ago and hasn't stopped since. My list is fluid but always as full as I want it to be.
I insist on using my own equipment, cloths and chemicals but only after consultation with each client. My cloths are always laundered at home, fresh with each application. I can go through 20 plus per house and NEVER used inappropriately.
Mops and floor washing equipment are the same.- always fresh and clean for each house.
Dyson canister is my vacuum, and emptied before I leave each house and blown out at least twice a week.
Windows are a slight premium price unless there is no ladder work ( I supply my own ladders as well) however I usually have time to do some interiors most visits unless the client has a special job.
For this I charge $20.00 per hour, 3 hour minimum but after several visits and the house is "under control", I give the nice clients a break and charge a flat $55. In this economy, it works well as each of them were good enough to augment the fee when fuel went sky high.
My reasoning for use of my own 'stuff' is if it breaks. it is mine and I am not replacing something that may have been ready to quit at any time.
Housework done correctly is a hard slog and I do it correctly. Some of my clients have been with me for over ten years and I have had to tell some that I would not continue on with them. Only one client is home at my arrival so I have no keys for her. I cat sit and look after houses when holidays and absentee owners require.
Basically I am a house husband - small repairs etc for any request.
BTW, at this point in time, I have 27 keys, 14 alarm codes including a pharmacy, travel agency, and three estates that I look after. I love it and that is what to look for when interviewing.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Here are just a few names of some "high-profile" folks who have made headlines in recent years for allegedly violating tax laws pertaining to household help (nannys included):

-- Nancy Killefer, Obama nominee for Chief Performance Officer
-- Zoe Baird, Clinton nominee for Attorney General
-- Kimba Wood, Clinton nominee for Attorney General
-- Linda Chavez, Bush nominee for Secretary of Labor
-- Carolyn Kennedy, New York Senator candidate to replace Hillary Clinton

"Innocent until proven guilty" doesn't work too well in these cases. This stuff gets uncovered when their entire life's history is laid bare before they go before Congress for confirmation hearings. They usually pay the back taxes and withdraw their names from further consideration.

The great majority of folks who pay under the table seldom face that kind of scrutiny and end up getting away with it.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I put in 60+ hour weeks in the restaurant where I work and have zero time to do any cleaning. I live in the Kingston area of New York and when I first went looking for a cleaning service, none of the ones I talked to seemed too impressive.

I ended up trying a local company because they had Celtic in the name-- and I'm Irish so I gave them a shot. lol Actually, I liked that they use enviromentally friendly natural products, because some cleaning chemicals take my breath away and make me feel sick.

Anyway, the service turned out to be top notch. I've got a three bedroom townhouse w/ 2.5 baths and she charges me $72 a week for what she calls a three hour cleaning, but my neighbor who lets her in for me, says she's often there for more like 3 1/2 hours. The lady even leaves thank you notes with an ocassional little gift. A few weeks ago it was homemade candy rolled in cinnamon and when I got home today I found a loaf of fresh baked Irish soda bread. How cool is that?

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Cabsav-your cleaning lady sounds wonderful. Does she have any sisters in Long Island? I remember once I was in JCPenney looking at soap dishes. An older lady was doing the same, and asked my opinion:Do you like this one? and held up a ceramic dish. I said yes and she said "I'm going to leave this as a gift for one of my clients. I clean house for them." I thought, how nice, a cleaning lady who goives you presents. . .

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I live about an hour SW of Boston, MA and paid $80 every other week to a lady who cleaned for 3-3 1/2 hrs over the past 5 yrs. I have a 2400 sf home w/ 3 bd, 2 1/2 baths. the cleaning included scrubbing all baths, washing laundry room floor, dry mopping all wood floors and cleaning them as needed; Vacuuming all rugs and carpets, dusting, cleaning top of stove, counters, sink. She would clean inside of windows if I asked. I would try to have any clutter picked up. I gave her Xmas bonus of 1-2 wks pay. I let her go this past year as I was not working as many hours and felt it was time for me to do my own cleaning again. I must admit I am having a hard time getting it all done.
I wish you all would mention where you live as that certainly affects the price you pay for housekeepers. I have enjoyed this blog.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

JustKaren- I see you have posted the Trunk Slammer article. Did you get that from the Global Cleaning Association? I too, am a member. I have owned a residential cleaning company in Oregon since 1994. This is an interesting thread. Members of the GCA would love it!

It seems obvious that the majority of the cleaners that have been hired by members of this thread are trunk slammers and not legitimate businesses. This is why they are paid so little.

BTW, it is obvious that people who give there hired help "a raise" are truly and legally their employer, and responsible for worker's comp insurance and employment taxes. Good for you to try and educate the customer about this important subject.

 o
RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Home owners who provide cleaning supplies and tell their hired help how and when to clean are definately considered an employer in the government's eyes.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I currently have a cleaning service and am a personal house keeper as well. The lady I work for pays me $12 an hour which includes....... Laundry, walking dogs, taking care of twins, cleaning the entire home... i.e. making the beds, washing dishes, vacuum, mopping, picking up dog poop from the yard, dusting, etc. I personally think, as the one doing the work it should be more. Did I mention, organizing the closets and her drawers.. I am doing this at this point because I have to. My husband works in sales, and with this economy the way it is, I have to do whatever I can to help keep afloat.

Usually, where I am from for a house cleaning... It all depends on the size of the home and the amount of time it is going to take to clean it. Whether it is a deep clean, or a basic cleaning. I usually charge anywhere from $20-$40 an hour. I have never had a client tell me that I was charging too much, nor were they dis-satisfied. I have alot of clients that are referrals. People just have to put "worth" in themselves!! Do Not Ever short change yourselves!!! Cleaning up after your own family is alot of work, let alone to clean up for someone else :)

i also have a cleaning business. i have several packages. i charge by the size of the home. some of my clients only want a couple of rooms cleaned. the per room package starts at 25.00 that depends on the size of the room and what is requested. for a 2000sf home, every 2 weeks, i charge 125.00. it takes about 4 1/2 to 5 hours, to clean top to bottom, cleaning by hand baseboards, bathroom and kitchen floors, etc. it's clean, really clean. my clients want their money's worth. i don't blame them. it's my goal to give them what they paid for. excellent service, a place of rest and peace of mind.
i also leave them a receipt with the details of the services rendered for their record. i keep my books clean. no pun intended. i love what i do.

We have a fantastic house cleaner who has been working for us for 3 years. She charged us $100 a week when she first started. We have a 3000 sq foot home. My husband and I are extremely neat, so our house is always tidy when she comes. We have a minimalist/modern/clean lines style, so not a lot of knick knacks or other things to move or clean around. A year ago I gave her a raise to $110 a week. She is worth every penny. At Christmas I give her $100. She feels appreciated and valued, and our house is beautifully spotless.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I have 2 women come in monthly and I pay $75.00. I've had them for about three years. They have a key to the house and they're very nice and I trust them...but sometimes I feel they skimp a little. Basically, I'm satisfied but I don't think they do all they say they are doing. Some times are better than other times. I was home from work one day they were scheduled to clean and they showed up around 3:30 pm. I get home no later than 5:30 pm, so it's about one to two hours of cleaning. I forgot to mention, I have a 2 story townhouse a little over 1500 sf. I try to keep things basically tidy, have no pets, and keep the kitchen and two bathrooms clean. From reading all the posts on this forum, a lot of cleaners give you a 4 solid hours and seem to do more. I wouldn't mind paying more, as housework is grueling and hard work. I'm thinking that I'd like to find someone who will spend at least four hours and do reliable work. I'd keep them on, maybe talk to them? Anyway, I live in central NJ, Princeton and Lawrenceville area. Anyone know of good, reliable people (would prefer an individual or individuals who work on their own...NO cleaning franchises...Merry Maids, ex.)?? No offense to anyone who works for those franchises, as there are good people, I'm sure, but I've heard not good stories about them, and would like steer clear of them.

Junkie~
When you have 2 people clean for 2 hours, that equals 4 hours of cleaning.
I've been doing this for 15 years and no one seems to understand that part.
You ARE getting 4 hours of cleaning if 2 people are there from 3:30-5:30.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Thanks Shastais for your post. Most people do not understand that they are paying for the hours of cleaning that are being done, not how long the cleaners are in their home. Like you said, the man hours are doubled or tripled by the amount of cleaners (2-3). They think that if cleaners are only there for an 2 hours then they are paying a higher rate. Not so. They got 4 hours of cleaning done in their home. I actually had someone dismiss my services because they couldn't grasp the concept of this and thought they were paying me too much. This woman is a very intelligent woman, but just couldn't get it. I now explain it to all of my clients so they are not surprised when I give them the total. I have a small cleaning company in Ohio and think I charge very fairly..

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

What a fascinating read!

I have a housecleaning business in the Twin Cities. I worked, a few years ago, for another company. They were incredibly frustrating! Everything was sprayed and wiped down. If we were running late, the term was 'cc' (cut corners). That is not how I clean because it simply isn't cleaning.
Showers? I get in, roll up my jeans, and scrub top to bottom. Kitchen floors have drips and sticky stains and the only way to get them up is to spray and hand clean...
Knicknacks need to be dusted as well as the space underneath them. Table legs, chair legs, lower edges of furniture... It all collects dust and needs to be done.
I charge $27 an hour and I have not lost a single customer in this economy. Every client has been a reference that branched off my two original clients.
I use environmentally friendly cleaners that work (read: truly kill germs in the bathroom and kitchen!) care for furniture and smell wonderful! My clients love that their houses sparkle and smell like orange and eucalyptus...
For those hiring, no matter how wonderful someone seems, get references and CALL THEM. My clients are happy to give me references and you will learn a lot.
I believe charging by the hour is more fair for the client and me. The first few times I do a house, it takes longer. There is buildup to scrub, and it takes a few times to get to know a house and develop a routine.
When I worked for the other cleaning company, they rushed every job to get to the next one and believe me, the work suffered! Spraying and wiping does not work.
As for cleaning supplies, I supply them unless a client has a special need. For example, one woman has cats. I use her vac since I will be picking up a lot of hair and bits of cat litter. I supply the rags, too, but respect how they are used. I never use a rag in a toilet. I don't want to carry that home and put it in my machine. Mop heads, rags, etc are all fresh for every house. I wouldn't want someone else's dirt brought in to my home, so I won't do it to my clients.
Please pay your cleaners what they are worth. If you find someone honest and detailed and they ask for $12 an hour, up it considerably and tell them why. Be clear about your expectations and any special needs or issues you are concerned about. Mention the artwork that is very fragile...
There are cleaners that take pride in their work. Get references and walk through your house when they are done.

RE: How much do you pay for house cleaning?

I recently contacted a cleaning service listed in our yellow pages for a one-time-only cleaning because of unexpected company coming. This was not a chain service nor large service but rather a lady, her mother and daughter.
I have 2200 sq feet, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and was asking for vacuuming of carpet floors, moping tile floors (no waxing), cleaning both bathrooms, thorough dusting throughout, look for cobwebs. shine mirrors, -no beds to change, no dishes to clean up, no window washing.
I am elderly but still do all these tasks myself but slowly and over time. My house is by no means in a state of filth but I wanted the sprucing up because of the companty.
She gave me an estimate of $300. That's what I said, three hundred dollars!!
I quickly showed her the door, told her she had insulted my intelligence, asked her if she knew there is a recession going and and how long did she think it would be before she is out of business.
She left in a huff, of course, which pleased me.
I can only surmise she saw my gray hair, my walking cane, and figured I was out of touch and over a barrel.

In many cases, its true! You get the service based on what your paying is. $10/h for a cleaner isn't going to get you FANTASTIC cleaning. To get the best of the best, your best bet is to find a cleaner who charges $20/h +.
My company charges $65/4 hours of cleaning within Middlesex county. We are one of the most affordable cleaning companies with thorough detailed cleaning in Middlesex County/ ON Canada. Just a ball park figure when hiring a company rather than a "cleaning lady" Your expectations should be based on what your paying your cleaner.
Have a fantastic day.

Wow!! Lots of water under the bridge since this began...
I see my first post I mentioned the house cleaner I paid $10 an hour and was not pleased....I should have canned her....she ended up stealing me blind....jewelry, coins binoculars, purses etc etc....even a pyrex bread pan!
The next was someone who had her own business, was expensive, like 18.50 an hour, was pretty good, but she got divorced and left town....then I did my own for more than a year....the next was someone who charged $17 an hour...worked like a daemon....but her attendance was a sometime thing.
Now I have someone new....$15 an hour comes well recommended, so far seems very good and used to work for the woman who ran the best cleaning service I ever had....
So we'll see!
