I have lots of colorful dishtowels which have retained a somewhat greasy and used smell to them. How do I wash them to get rid of this smell? I think the worst happened on Thanksgiving with the turkey and all.

Hot water....heavy duty detergent like tide....and a scoop of Oxi clean....agitate for 10 minutes, rinse and dry. If they smell greasy....they ARE greasy! Linda C

Oxi Clean is the best way to go. If they're not too bulky you could just soak them in the sink with hot water. This is what I used to do with my son's football uniform and believe me, nothing smells like practice gear left in a locker for a few weeks!!! I would leave it for a good hour or more though if the smell is really strong. You said they are brightly colored - I would test a piece of one first to make sure the color stays. I have had Oxi Clean "bleach" certain items. It just depends on the material.

Borax is a great cleaner and deodorizer and less likely to bleach something. Some vinegar in the rinse is good too. Actually vinegar is a pretty good grease cutter itself, as would be some Dawn dishsoap. Mine get fairly ripe since I use them a bit more than I should, wiping other things too and a good soaking and washing in Borax and a good laundry detergent followed by vinegar in the rinse cycle does the trick for me. Oh and I often put a shot of dishwasher detergent in there for an extra boost. (I use the kind without bleach or lemon scent, but to get the enzymes in there and soak them a bit first if they're really bad.) And sometimes for a little extra sanitizing I'll give them a bleach wash.

I've gotten rid of bad odors in laundry by washing on hot, stopping the washer and dumping in a cup of baking soda and letting it sit for about a half hour before resuming the load. It is usually a greasy odor that my hubby brings home on his work clothes. Works well for me.

I use Pine Sol with a little soap in the washer. greatest thing even for cleaning rags, or that mildew smell, or kitchen towels. Works like a charm, no soaking needed.
