dust!

Our home is 10 yrs old. My husband regularly uses our Rainbow vacuum and changes the furnace filter. We live in mid-MO, not a dusty area.
Lately, we have had a film of "white dust" on everything. I could dust daily (but I don't).
I am looking for possible reasons. I've thought about the carpet loosing tiny bits or perhaps our ductwork needs to be cleaned (an expense task we can't afford right now).
Does ANYONE have suggestions on what it might be or how to keep the dust from collecting so quickly.
HELP!!!

Are you running a humidifier with tap water in it? If so, the white dust is from the minerals in your water. Switch to distilled or reverse osmosis water for the unit and that should take care of the problem. -Grainlady

I had not even thought about that! We have a water softener, but I'm sure there's still some minerals in the water. Will try the distilled water as soon as I can get to town and purchase some!
Thanks for that idea.
I'm TIRED of dusting and tired of seeing the dust!
