Consumer Reports - Vacuums March 07

I saw on the Kirby v. Dyson thread that Consumer Reports just ranked vacuums again. I'll be in the market for a new vacuum soon and was curious what they ranked highly (not that I'll necessarily buy what they recommend). Just curious. Any "Best Buys" listed? Anyone willing to share the info? TIA!

Best Buys in Uprights:
- Kenmore Progressive w/ Direct Drive 35922(35923) $300
- Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra 4870 $150

Best Buys in Canisters:
- Kenmore Progressive 25512(25513) $300

CR Quick Picks

Best uprights for most tasks:
- Kenmore $300 (CR best Buy)
- Hoover Windtunnel 2 U8311-900 $250
- Eureka $150 (CR best Buy)
The Kenmore offers the best blend of performance. Choose the Hoover if you value easier handling over cleaning w/tools, the Eureka for its low price & superb pet-hair performance.

Least weight and lower cost
- Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900 $60
- Hoover Empower U5262-910(U5265-900, U5269-90, U5268-970) $100
- Bissell Powerforce 6579-2 $50
All 3 are well below 20 lbs. Either Hoover is a fine choice if you don't mind added noise. Consider the low-priced Bissell if bare floors are a bigger part of your cleaning than carpets.

Best canisters for most tasks:
- Kenmore Progressive 25614(25615) $350
- Kenmore $300 (CR Best Buy)
- Hoover Windtunnel Bagless S3765-040 (S3755) $180
Bost Kenmores offer similar performance. Choose the lower-priced Hoover if you want a bagless vac & value superb hose suction over handling and pet-hair pickup.

Thank you so much, Nelles! All the Kenmores & Hoovers in there make me wonder if it's really unbiased or if there's some "funny business" going on. I did see the Kenmore Progressives -- maybe I'll give one of those a shot. Thanks again!

I have the Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra 4870 and I love it. It is a little heavy though.

I seriously doubt there's any "funny business" going on between CR and ANY company and/or product they rate highly.

CR is a very well-respected organization. Recently, when CR reported problems with their testing procedures & results for infant/child car seats, the media was all over the story and how it would cause severe problems for CR's credibility.

I believe the CR article was focusing on best vaccuums *for pet hair*

That said, I also have a Eureka Boss Smart Vac and love it.

RE: Consumer Reports - Vacuums March 07

Not only the best for pet hair, but they did include it this time because pet hair is very difficult to pickup because of static electricity.

CR uses equipment not available to the homeowner to test how much dirt is left on floors and in carpets after vacuuming. Your carpet may look clean, but what's still there that you can't see? They also focus on what gets blown back into the room with the machine's exhaust.

I always read CR before buying an appliance. CR is one of the few sources of accurate consumer info. Appliance manufactures do not have the best interest of the consumer at heart (not even that cute, sweet little Mr Oreck). It seems strange that some people are determined to believe the manufacture's advertising and resent CR's negative reports. Example, I've heard bad things about Dyson from people who own one--well actually two. Maybe these people are just too picky--they are fanatics about cleaning. Other Dyson owners quote "love, love, love" their machine.

After reading these forums, I do wonder about people who say they love an appliance. Being very critical of most appliances, there are always things that could/should be better. Some vacumms are better than others, but I have never found one that was perfect that I loved. And I definately want to know how much microscopic stuff is left on my floors after vacumming.

I would check Epinions and similar websites before making a purchase based on CR's recommendations. Five years ago I bought a $300 Hoover WindTunnel upright that they had ranked No.1. The thing is a piece of junk. The motor overheats after just 20-30 seconds of vacuuming and it shuts off for half an hour. When I bought it it was new on the market so there weren't any complaints to be found but since then a lot of people have reported similar problems with it.

I also bought a Panasonic DVD recorder that they rated highly and it's had a lot of issues, including not keeping the correct time, freezing up and not recognizing regional codes, to the point where I can't play any DVD's (movies, TV series) I didn't record myself.

I enjoy reading CR but by no means should you base a buying decision on what it, or any one source, has to say.

I purchased my second Kenmore canister maybe five years ago. The first one lasted about 15 years. I have mostly bare floors and a couple 5 x 7 foot area rugs, on which I use the beater-bar attachment.

You know what went on the first? It was the switch. It was depressed by foot pressure. I'd replaced it a couple times, maybe poor design was involved. When we moved, we decided to buy a new vacuum, but the old one still worked. It was just inconvenient that the only way to shut it off was to uplug the vacuum.

Hi,

I have to say that I have a Dyson, the DC07 and I LOVE it. We don't wear shoes in house and have no pets, but this thing finds the dirt. We have mostly new(less than year old) Shaw carpet and it does a great job.

Were Electrolux even rated? I just purchased a canister type that is refurbished online. It come with the same warranty as a new unit. It has hepa filter and special attachments to tackle pet hair on fabric covered furniture. The unit is for primarily solid surface floors which i have throughout my house.

As a prior owner of Kenmore, I'd never buy again. Whoever designed them obviously isn't a house cleaner. Hoses were so short that vacume cleaner fell on top of me every time I had to use it.

I've switched back to Hoover. Long history with Hoover, and very pleased.

I bought the Eureka Boss Smart Vac based on their suggestion. I got it at Best Buy for $140. Does an excellent job with all the carpeted surfaces and the hose also has great suction. Good for cat and dog hair. Main complaint is that the base is very heavy, so carrying it up and down the stairs is pretty tough. I constantly have black and blue from it smacking against my shins while carrying it.
I would 'love it' if it were much lighter weight. Also, sometimes the bag is a bit difficult to place just right. A few times I thought I had installed it properly, until dust started coming out the front. When I opened it, all the dust and hair it picked up were inside the canister, but not inside the bag. Yuck.

To say that CR isn't biased is a naive statement. It has shareholders that need to be pleased and some of their results confirm that. We are a rep for high end appliances and are familiar with most brands and CR doesn't accurately represent the industry in their "tests".

it is highly suspect that the Kenmore brand of vacuums ended up in the top selections for each category. I have never used one but Sears doesn't have a great manufacturing reputation so I wonder how they can produce a product that could be perceived as the highest quality.

 o
RE: Consumer Reports - Vacuums March 07

Bellamay tell us you're not as dull as the erroneous comments you just made. CR is a NON-profit organization, do you have the foggiest idea what that means? It means no shareholders!!
Secondly, Sears does not manufacture any of its appliances. It contracts other manufacturers to build them to its specifications..ie. GE, Frigidaire, Whirpool,Panasonic etc.

There's a saying: It is better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt.

RE: Consumer Reports - Vacuums March 07

My mother in law and her daughter both had Hoover Windtunnel bagless vacuums and said they loved them. so I bought one, and I hated it. After about six months of use, the hose got plugged and I couldn't unclog it myself. I took it to an appliance repair place. They said they are constantly repairing them, they're no good. I then bought a Eureka. I didn't like it. It didn't have good suction. So much for a CR best value. I now take everything CR says with a grain of salt, including their auto reviews.

 o
RE: Consumer Reports - Vacuums March 07

Bellamay, CR sends surveys out to their customers (I am one) and we rate certain products. If only a couple people have purchased a certain brand in the last year, they really can't compare it with the other brands that were purchased by thousands of people.

Sears Kenmore products are very popular, and many people buy them and apparently like them over, say, the Electrolux which may not be represented in the ratings. CR has to have at least a certain percentage of people chiming in who own a certain product for them to rate them.

 o
RE: Consumer Reports - Vacuums March 07

CR did rate the Eelctrolux. Electrolux (from Sweden not Aerus formerly known as Electrolux...sort of...long story) was rated hilghly last fall with the Oxygen 3.

I personally hate Kenmore progressive vacuums--both uprights and canisters. I've sold many; mostly because of CR. I found it hilarious when CR changed there mind and reranked canister vacuums both last fall and this spring. All of the vacuums in the top three have been around since last spring, and yet all of them have moved in the rankings each time CR has posted new rankings--I guess they had a change of heart...how helpful...

RE: Consumer Reports - Vacuums March 07

I used to buy items based on CR reports but NO MORE. I have bought too many items, i.e. coffemakers, vacuums, radios, etc. only to find that my experiences with their highly rated items did not match their tests. I'm glad to hear other people have had some similar experiences ... I thought it was just me being too picky or something.
