HI everyone......I was just reading the cleaning issues on smooth top electric ranges since I have one & some one mentioned you should not use visions cookware on them. Is that so?

Thanks for your help!

RE: Smooth top ranges

I have a Maytag smooth top electric range, and the manual states "Do not use glass pans. They may scratch the surface." I haven't owned Visions cookware in years, but the pieces I did own were glass, so I'm guessing this is why their use was not recommended.

As far as my personal experience, I have not used glass pans on the cooktop because of the above warning. I know firsthand, however, that scratches can occur because not long after we got the range, my husband set a ceramic pizza stone on the cooktop after removing it from the oven, and it left several scratches on the cooktop which I have not been able to remove. Since that incident, we have been especially careful to make sure nothing glass or ceramic comes in contact with the cooktop, and no more scratches have appeared.

Hope that's helpful. For the record, as far as cleaning goes, I used the "special" cleansers for glass cooktops for the first few years we had the range, but eventually switched over to baking soda and water. It's definitely cheaper, and I think it works better and faster at removing burnt on food. The cooktop cleansers also tended to leave a film on the cooktop that took repeated wiping with a wet cloth to remove.

Thank you Butterflygal! We just built 2 yrs. ago & I am learning about this range still- LOL! We don't have scratches but we have some spots that look like water spots on one of the burners & can't seem to get them out. I ordered a kit from Whirlpool even though we have a Jenn-Aire downdraft smooth top glass rangetop. The protectant that you use is great for keeping the shine & a deep rich black color. My DH hates this thing even though he was the one that wanted it. He wants gas so bad so we may later change over but for now I am trying to make the best of the situation. I appreciate all your helpful tips!

I don't have any comments about cookware, but on my smooth-top I use BarKeepers Friend to clean it. It's powder in a can like Comet. With a wet paper towel and BarKeeper's Friend my cooktop is easy to keep clean.

Littlebug, I'm thinking about buying a smoothtop range and your BarKeeper's Friend hint will be helpful; thanks!

If you use the cleaners designed for the smooth top, use a paper towel to remove any streaks. Barkeepers also works well on the stuck on crud - I use it with a dry 3M scratch pad for the worst ones.

RE: Smooth top ranges

I ave never had any problem with scratching but when I moved here 12 years ago I had 3 of the amber Visions. I used it for years on a gas cooktop. Glass is a very poor heat conductor glass on glass is worse as glass is used as an insulator. It took 3 times as long to get water to boil and I just threw the Visions in the garbage. This is the reason that Salton uses glass on their electric heating trays. The heat transfer of poor and the food on the tray doesn't over cook or dry out.
