I can't help you with a specific model name, but I have a Miele Canister Vac that is going on 16 years old--with never a problem. With a space like yours, I would definitely get one of their canister vacs, and I'd pair it with an electric powerhead--the big one, I think it's SEB236, for your carpets and area rugs. You can adjust it to fit the low pile carpet and also your area rugs. The regular parquet brush head should be fine with your hardwoods and tile. Shy away from the "turbo" head that is sold to go on both carpets and hard floors--you have too much of both, and these do a much better job.

When we ripped up the very old, very ugly carpet that came with our house after 12 years of living here, the guys that took it out were very impressed that there wasn't much dirt underneath it. The Miele does a terrific job.

I second the vote for a canister. I have the S5 and the S7 (upright). I only use the upright on my upper level as it is 75% broadloom + one wool area rug.

On my lower level and main floor I have mostly hardwood with some area rugs, tile and laminate. I love my Miele S5 canister vacuum. It is light and moves easily and works beautifully.

You need a floor tool. I have the Parquet tool (SBB 300). It is very agile - I really like it.

I also have the SEB 236 Direct Connect Powerbrush. It is excellent. It grooms carpets so nicely. Does a much better job than the power head that came with my Beam central vac.
