Yikes! Vinegar in the washer caused huge sudsy mess!

| I have a front loader washing machine. Yesterday, I put vinegar in the 'softener' dispenser and the result was one huge soapy mess. I thought vinegar cut soap suds? |

A disaster will result every time when the user pours in one gallon of vinegar ! Front loaders are different, have needs that tops loaders have, but in different quantities and times. The whole mess will clean up with hot water only, and about ten rags. |

| Thanks earthworm, but I only used about 1/2 cup. |

The vinegar may have cleaned years of accumulated softener, causing tons of bubbles. Héloise, Martha Stewart,Rainey, and others recommend a mild acid(vinegar) for this purpose. The third woman, my wife, uses the white vinegar in the rinse cycle when doing woolens; this eliminates soap scum. |

You have brought back into solution years of soap residue.... Either get a water softener....wash with less soap....or do a vinegar run more often. Linda C |

| Thanks earthworm and Linda. I don't use a softener and don't really add that much detergent. I guess it is just from build up. I should probably use the vinegar in every load for a while, maybe use the extra rinse cycle until the suds problem disappears. |

I have a front loader and use about 1/2 cup of white vinegar in each rinse. I have never had that problem so I think that I have to agree that it brought out a lot of residue buildup. Just use less from now on till you think you have washed everything then move up to 1/2 if you think you need more. By the way, my top loader has a compartment for the bleach cycle and I divide my 1/2 cup vinegar between that compartment and the rinse cycle. That way they get two milder rinses with the vinegar. |

That's a good idea Cinderalla! By the rinse cycle, do you mean the softener dispenser? It's really strange because I've never used a lot of detergent. I bet that the water (town well) has something to do with it too. |

If your water isn't very soft.....you will find that your clothes have a ton of soap residue.....try adding 1/2 a cup of vinegar to a load of towels....and no detergent. I'll bet you get lots of suds. Linda C |

| Can you tell me how much vinegar to add for a top loading washing machine? Is it better to add to the wash cycle or rinse cycle? Our bath towels are hard and crunchy even though they are dried in a dryer. Is this from detergent build-up? I prefer not to use rinse agents or dryer sheets - can't stand the smell for one thing and would rather not have another chemical in my clothes. |

| Top loading? I use about 1/4 cup, diluted with enough water to fill the dispenser. The rinse cycle is where it is used, as what they call a souring agent to help the soap rinse thoroughly. Make sure you only use the recommended amount of detergent and even for heavy loads, that is never a full scoop. Do as Linda suggests: Wash with no soap, then check the load partway thru and see if you see suds. |

Top loading ( containing the normal 16 gallons of water)....I put 2 cups of white vinegar in the wash cycle....and no detergent. Repeat until clothes or towels are soft and the sudsing stops. Calgon water softener will also remove residual soap and hard water deposits. Linda C |

| Yes, what I meant to say was that I divide the 1/2 cup vinegar between the bleach dispenser and the fabric softener dispenser. |

| Subrosa - If you have hard water, that is probably causing 'crunchy towels'. I suggest you soften the water, as LindaC suggests, with Calgon or White King. There is a FAQ at the Laundry Room forum discussing the reintroduction of phosphates. Many of us active on that forum purchase phosphates in the form of STPP (sodium tripolyphosphate) and add it to our detergent for better cleaning/softening/whitening. I don't know Canada law about phosphates; in the USA, it is regulated state by state. Here is a link to the FAQ. Also, search at the Laundry Forum for 'crunchy towels' and you will be linked to a detergent discussion. Here is the cut/paste link...you may need to control-F to get to the heart of the thread. http://ths.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/laundry/2003052601018823.html |

| I have a Bosch front loader and use white vinegar in the RINSE cycle, along with a little fabric softerner. I have never heard of putting it in the wash cycle. I only use about 1/4 cup at the most, since FL machines, especially the euro models, use about one-fourth the amount of water at top loaders. Any more vinegar than that and my clothes smell like salad dressing. Lynne |

| I'm pretty sure that when I've read of people using vinegar in a front loader, which is discussed from time to time on the laundry forum, that they use only 1 or 2 tablespoons of the stuff. Maybe you could check with the laundromaniacs. |

| Put the vinegar in the softener dispenser. You can fill it to the MAX line. Or you can use part vinegar and part softener. |
