Leaf impressions in clay plaque

Posted by janieinmo (My Page) on

First off I'm brand new to clay/gloss/firing. Visiting many craft shows I've seen wall vases or plaques where the potter has made leaf impressions and such on their item. I have since tried using translucent glazes but it seems as though the whole thing is the same color. I can see the leaf impression but the look I'm going for is just the impression being dark and the other a lot lighter. Am I making sense? I have also seen pieces, bought one, that they have painted around the leaf but the leaf looks like a real leaf, brown in color. Can anyone help me???

TIA

Hi,
I do very limited clay work. But I think I know what you are thinking of.
Are you familiar with underglazes. You can use them at the bisque point, or after.
once your leaf impression is made, carefully put a little underglaze (nice thing is you can water these down like watercolor too)into the leaf impression area. Then take off the glaz you do not want there with a damp sponge, also around the edges.
If you want it glazed overall with say a clear or transparent, you can do that after the first bisque firing.
Putting on glaze and wiping it off will work very effectively in giving just a touch of color

Just to add a little more info- underglaze is usually a white clay that has had pigment added to it. They are available in quite a number of colors and can be applied with a brush, sponge or even a rag. Excess underglaze can be removed with a wet sponge or rag, as stated above. You can even mix them to create a specific shade or color.

Hope this helps.
