Flooring options for new studio (now a bedroom)

I'm getting ready to transform my upstairs bonus room into a pottery studio with wheel, wedging table, etc. I assume I'll need to remove the wall-to-wall carpet, then put down something seamless and washable. What is the best type of flooring that would also look nice for resale? Will I need to install a plywood sub-flooor first?
