Ceramic pottery firing

I am an Australian living in a terracotta pottery craft village in tribal Orissa India ( www.chandoorisai.com )and would like to experiment with ceramic pottery as a new direction for the village potters unfortunately I know nothing on the subject and also what, where and how to obtain the colours and oxides used for the process in this part of the world. It's not like one can just ring up the local potter supply shop so I will be starting from scratch. Hi tech (electric or gas fired kilns) methods are not suitable for this area and lo tech methods would be appreciated. Leon

RE: Ceramic pottery firing

I have never done this myself, but start researching RAKU ...it's a method of firing pots in the ground using sawdust as the fuel for heat. Perhaps someone on this forum has actual experience with this method, it can provide some really interesting results on the pottery glazes. Good luck...hope someone else can provide you with some useful information on how to get started.
