High Gloss Even Black Glaze for Earthenware

Posted by lucadelcarlo (My Page) on

Hello,
Though I'm not a ceramicist, I am involved in a start-up venture that requires the expertise of one. Is it possible to achieve a very high gloss and even black glaze on earthenware ceramics? It must not appear to be hand applied/painted on, but rather sprayed or machine applied. Thank you for your input!

Yes it is possible. You might want to try a few test pieces first since each glaze reacts differently on each clay body. Try an Amaco or Mayco low fire gloss black glaze. I use both on low fire red clay. You can either dip the piece or brush it on. Check your local ceramic shop for the glazes or try the catologs/internet Bailey Ceramics or Bennett Pottery. Good luck!
