What lights do you use?

Posted by excessfroufrou (My Page) on

After seeing Karen's beautiful reindeer with colored lights, it got me to thinking, about white or colored lights? What do you use inside and out. Over the years I have flip-flopped several times. This year on my large tree in the sun room, will be all white lights with big round bulbs and little twinkling ones. I have a 6 foot multi-colored fiber-optic tree (I added more colored lights) in my family room for all my vintage ornaments and in my morning room/kitchen it is white tree with pink of course. Outside I have large multi-colored in green garland. I am a sucker for any kind of lights.

Personally, I like white lights best, but enjoy colored on other folk's trees. For our big "Family" tree, we use all white lights in several different styles (tiny, snowflake, icicle, bird, etc. For the Spanish Colonial family room tree, I use just the tiny white ones. DD & DS both chose tiny colored lights for their bedroom trees. I've just bought a new tree for the guest room, which will be a Western tree. I'll use white on that one, too. Outside, DH strings white icicle lights along the front portal roof and then wraps the posts in tiny white lights. We use real luminarias along the walkways and down our driveway.

I use mini-multicolored ones outside on the wreaths and the bushes. On the main tree I use mini-clears on the kidlets tree in the LR I use mini multicolors. I got a link here for twinkle lights and have ordered a string or two of those.
Someone mentioned "rice lights"...what are those? They sound interesting too!! Yep, I am a sucker for lights...as far as I am concerned, the lights and the music are the best decorations for Christmas!

I use white..but I enjoy seeing the cors on other's trees and houses..
I don't want to have to change..too much of an investment! :)

I like the little white lights too. It was funny last year when I plugged up one of my table trees and found it had colored lights on it. I actually was dismayed and didn't remember even having them. But the idea of replacing all those strings was too much. I ended up enjoying having one tree with colored lights afterall.
I only have small table trees, 3 to 5 ft. I'm just not able to do a big tree any longer, and I am quite sure my cats would enjoy one waaaaaay too much for my sanity.

We use small white lights on our trees, front porch railings, and the wreath on the barn.
However, in the Corner, where the porch wraps around, we put up a large tree, and use Old Fashioned colored lights..the Big Ones! That tree, gives the porch an old fashioned, Vintage look to it, which we like.

Syble,
We generally use the mini white lights. Last year we used the "warm white" LEDS to outline our windows and liked them very much. We bought some larger warm white LEDs to put along the porch roof this year. I use mini white lights on my tree.

Slinky, what a GREAT IDEA! We had the larger colored lights on our tree when I was a child. When I was very young we had longer, skinnier ribbed lights, kind of like I have seen reproduced lately. I don't have a porch big enough to put a tree like you are doing, but I have a long entry hall and I'd LOVE to have a smaller (maybe six-foot) tree decorated with the colored lights (and BUBBLE LIGHTS!) at the end of this hall where you see it as you come in the front door.

How I envy those of you with nice big porches! My front patio has a slight overhang--meant to look a bit like a porch I guess, but really narrow. I remember how excited we were when the mini lights came out--but now I realize I really like the old fashioned big lights best. And around here, nearly everyone went to the white icycle lights on their houses (including us for a few years)--very boring when everyone does the same thing! Now that we have a DGD, everything has to be bright and colorful--so we use multicolored lights inside and out! May go back to just white when she gets older however. Luvs

OMG - light fanatic here - I use them all from retro to mini white ones - I can't buy into the led ones yet - they may grown on me but right now I don't like them at all but I do have everything from past years. I love the bubble lights and have several sets of them - I like the big retro ones for both indoor and out. Mostly I use mini white lights tho but every string of lights that I may buy has their own special place. I put up close to 15 trees and each theme requires it own unique lighting - did I mention that I love lights :) .....

I have a little bits of everything too. The LR figural tree has Swedish Luma candle lights & only broken 1 bulb in 35 yrs with zero that have burned out. I have 2 sets of 7 Adler flicker flame candle lights. The rest of the trees have multi-colored light strings, one sets is a mini rainbow incandescent & the rest are LED sets. I add the dusk to dawn LED candles to the windows just before Thanksgiving. I have garland with multi-colored incandescent lights that I use to put outside.
Lynne, I can't wait to see your tree pictures! (My tree pics link can be seen in post - I Spy)

RE: What lights do you use?

We bought a 7' multi-colored light tree after Christmas the year before we bought this house. I always had colored lights growing up and that's what I always use.

DH bought me blue icicle lights one year as a surprise(I love blue lights), but after seeing him hanging off of our roof and trying to hang onto a very tall ladder to reach the roof to get them down I said NO MORE!! Now we hang them on our deck railings a safe 3-4' from the ground!

When I lived inside the town limits they sent a letter to all of the residents asking them to use white lights. I put my usual blue lights in my windows. The police chief gave me a hard time about it. (We were friends and worked together) I told him I had never played follow the leader- I was the leader!!

Betty,
We used to outline the roof with lights too, but I'm with you, I couldn't stand the thought of DH falling, so now I just outline the door and garage door, which I can reach with a step ladder. We knew an elderly gentleman who fell and broke his hip while decorating and never made a full recovery. And I agree, who wants to follow the leader, your way too talented for that.

RE: What lights do you use?

Well here's my input for lights on your Christmas tree-I put colored lights on my tree and white lights and plug them in to two separate plug-ins so I can do white when I'm in the mood for that or colored for a more traditional look (or both if you like). I've done this for years because I always liked white and my kids liked colored. THis way you can have both looks! Enjoy!(I hope I made this clear!)

RE: What lights do you use?

I always use a variety. I love the blue, red and green by themselves but always have the colored and white on my trees.

You gals are a riot when it comes to talking lights. I have put both lights on my tree but I turned all of them on together and liked it. I have some flame lights that I haven't put out but after reading this I'll try to remember to go get them tomorrow.

All this talk has made me want to start decorating so I'm going to go get started. Punk
