Black Plates?

Posted by cindylouhoo (My Page) on

I've seen many beautiful tablescapes with black dishes and would like to add some to my collection. I found some neat salad plates by Pottery Barn on clearance at T.J. Maxx, but they already seemed so scratched! Is that typical with the black finish, or does it depend on the manufacturer? Thanks!

I had black dishes at one time. I don't remember who made them, but the plates did scratch from using knives. They were the dishes I used every day, so they got a lot of wear. I eventually gave mine to SA. (I later wished I'd kept 2 place settings.) My niece has black dishes she uses every day and the plates and salad plates are scratched. It isn't too noticeable unless the light hits them just right. HTH

I have some, and yes, they do have some scratches which show if the light hits them just right. Might be because they have such a shiney finish. Luvs

I have some also and they do tend to scratch if I'm not super careful with them.

Cindy,

Thanks for asking and now I know before I buy. Both of my kids had black years ago and now I'm thinking maybe thats why they no longer use them. Maybe I'll ask them and they will give them to me if they haven't already given them away.

I'm really liking all the black and white dishes I'm seeing on here. Oh I guess its called tranferware.

Hi Cindy
I have shiney, black plates from Ace Hardware made by Waechtersbach (Germany). I store them with paper towel between them. They do not have any scratches on them and they are dishwasher safe. I've had them a year and they are lovely. I have the dessert/salad plates. Hope this helps.
