Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. . .

I found this lady's blog last week while looking at another blog. I LOVE this idea and the stuff is from the dollar store. I saw these tall white candles in there the other day and thought they were neat. I'm going to use these on my two tables for Thanksgiving. You might even have the same stuff around your house! Just wanted to share!

Here is a link that might be useful: blog

I have the WS hurricanes and love them, but the price, not so much. I had the hurricanes for a few years before WS came out with the inserts. I think the "affordable" hurricane looks great. I used the hurricanes on my Christmas table last year. A pic from that table:

Photobucket

As you can see, they are a tad bit too tall for dining table, but I hadn't planned anything else, so I just went with them. Fortunately, we are tall people in my family. LOL The hurricanes now reside on the roll top desk in my foyer.

Glad to see that there is an affordable option out there because the WS hurrianes were not inexpensive. Inserts were affordable, but the size I needed was on back order last year, luckily they came in well before Christmas.

Here's a pic of my "fall" hurricane: Getting geared up to change out for Christmas!

Great find shee.

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Sharee, that is neat..I have never seen her blog..there are so MANY! I could spend the whole day hopping from one to the next!

Work, your table is lovely. I have a WS outlet about 45 min from me. I never buy in the reg store, I just wait till it gets to the outlet..
Last week I saw a Santa pan for 30 dollars ON SALE! I paid a dollar for the same pan last year after Cmas!
And they have their things marked down before Christmas..
if you can wait and take a chance..

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

I have a similar hurricane, without the sleeve though, that I got from AC Moore...used a 40% off coupon too.

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Thanks for this tip Shee...
I love making things like this and what a great tip. I've got the Hurricanes already.
Now I'm going to look for the sleeves to fit inside.
My DD has the WS ones, but being from another Generation..I wouldn't pay what she did for them!! LOL
This is just as nice, I think.
Kathleen..'Bargain Queen'.. I wish I had an outlet near me...lucky you.

Work..your table looks lovey with your dinnerware, and the hurricanes...TFS

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Indeed, this blog is full of great ideas for centerpiece and I might get a few ones since I'm supposed to host the Christmas eve this year...

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Thanks, Shee, for the link. I think the "made" hurricanes are very pretty, and the price is much more to my liking. I may already have the things to make them. I know I have the taper holders at least. Will have to get the pillar candle at least, though.

Hi, Prosperity, it is good to see you. I am glad you are getting some ideas for your Christmas Eve.

Thanks for that blog link, Sharee, I may just borrow the idea! Have to see what glass I have in my stash. I love candle hurricanes!

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Thanks for posting that, Shee! Those are so neat, and I'd never visited that blog before. I just love the Dollar Tree, and find so many nice things there.

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

What a great idea, I love economical crafts and those look so expensive. Instead of hot glue you could use GE Silicone II for windows and doors, like we use over at the garden junk forum to glue our totems and such. It works great for all kinds of glass.

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

C'mon guys... I didn't think ya'll lived in PA or I wouldn't of posted this until I bought mine. lol Joking.

On a serious note, I went to two different dollar store places today and they were totally OUT of the white candles and the larger hurricanes! What's going on here? I'm going go call tomorrow to see if they're getting more in. It was busy and I just wanted to get out of there.

Very, very bummed though!

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Shee, wah! I'm bummed too. I went to FOUR $ Trees today and only came home with the candlestick holders. Didn't find the large hurricane or the slim white candle. :(

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

What a great idea, Shee. Lots of bang for the buck here!
I may have the stuff, except the candle, in glass stash from Garden Junk totem ideas. And I'm so glad that neat Blogs are often posted here, otherwise I wouldn't see them!
I don't blog tho keep our Forum family ones bookmarked. And try to check Naps on the Porch frequently also. I loved this gal's you posted and think she'll stay bookmarked too!

Frou is right, if any of you want to glue glass, do try the GE Silicone II. Clear, for doors and windows. It is great stuff. And removable with a razor blade if you want to take stuff apart later on. We use it on all our outdoor glass things and weather doesn't affect it at all.

hugs, Karen

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

I keep thinking...but they just had them on Friday!

The GE Silicone II, can I buy that at Lowes in with the Liquid Nail, etc. type stuff? I've never heard of it.

Thanks for the tip!

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Shee, you can buy it most any place like Lowes or HD. Walmart has it but always check the date on theirs. If the glue is 'old' it doesn't work. I use so much of it, I buy the big giant tube that goes in a caulking gun. LOL.
But it does come in small tubes.

hugs, Karen

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Thanks for sharing that blog and the neat idea. I don't know if our Dollar Tree has the same stuff, but will look next time I go in. I love this kind of ideas, and would never spend that amount of money for the Wm. Sonoma ones. Luvs

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

WAAAAAAAHOOOOOO! Got em. ; )

Started my day by calling the dollar tree and asking if they'd get more in. I had a heck of a time describing what the white candles were. She was thinking tapers. She said probably not and gave me the number to another Dollar Tree. I called and that lady must have thought I was crazy. When she checked if they had them I was asking how many. Went over during lunch and grabbed the white candles but they didn't have any of the glass hurricanes! I saw on the lady's blog today she linked to the hurricanes she used and you can buy them online but have to buy a case or half case and the shipping. Printed the page out and my coworker found them during lunch at yet another DT. She said they only had 4 left!

I saw the price of the WS ones today and about fell over! I had no idea it was quite that much. I figured around the $40-50 range. hahaha

I hope those of you looking can find what you need or find other things to create the same look. I wish I could replace the candles. Don't know if I'll actually be lighting them or not. Guess it depends on how much I like them once done. :)

Does the GE Silicone stuff work better than hot glue? Not as noticeable?

 o
$ Tree

Shee, that's great! As I said, I went to four Dollar Trees last night and had no luck. There's about three more that I want to try yet before I give up.

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Well, I got candles and candle holders, but no hurricanes. Fortunately I think I have some hurricanes in the cabinet that will work. Thank you so much Shee for posting that...it is a great blog!

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Well, I flew to the DT at lunch and to my surprise they had the hurricanes and the candle sticks. They didn't have the white candles, but I'm gonna keep looking, I noticed on one site that I searched they were called prayer candles. If I don't find them, I have some tiny plain taper holders that I can stick in there for tapers or just use plain pillar candles. I'm thinking about making some more for the craft show that I'm doing.

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

I hosted a 50th Anniversary Party for my parents at a restaurant this past summer. Michaels and A.C. Moore both carry the hurricanes for about $10-$15 depending on the size. I would say that there was at least 2 or 3 different styles at each store. We have a craft warehouse in our area which would be another place that might carry the hurricanes. Another source is your local florist. I wanted to use different hurricanes on each table as I am not a fan of matchy matchy. I bought some at Michaels, some at A.C. Moore and one hurricane that was open at top and bottom from the florist. The open ended hurricane purchased from the florist cost me $11. I can't remember what I paid for the WS hurricanes, but I know they were not inexpensive. The florist did fresh flower rings. She purchased soft gold pillar candles for me as well. Candles were different sizes to fit each particular hurricane. I didn't use my WS hurricanes as the centerpieces were taken home by the person who had the 1/2 dollar coin under the coffee cup saucer at their place setting. Totally random. I had table cards, but the guests picked a seat at their assigned table. Since my parents are attending a number of 50th parties, I wanted to do something a little different as opposed to floral centerpieces. They were really pretty with the fresh flower rings. My florist put each hurricane, pillar and fresh flower ring on a clear glass plate and secured them on the plate with some sort of museum wax-type stuff that you would use to stabilize a candle in a candle stick. That extra step made it easier for the guest to get their hurricane to their car.

I have seen the glass pillar candles that Shee posted in my local grocery store. They are on the ethnic aisle in my store. Many have a religous label on the outside, but I have seen them in plain clear glass as well. I think red or green would look nice if you can't find white. I would decorate around the candle color.

HTH.

Hi all~it's Melissa from 320 Sycamore. Shee, thanks for the shout out and the link, I was wondering where all of the gardenweb hits were coming from :) Someone mentioned in the comments that they are afraid the hot glue might melt under the candle, so I need to test that out...I may try the GE Silicone mentioned as well. Thanks for all of your thoughts~I hope y'all can find the supplies at your stores.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Melissa

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Melissa, nice of you to come here to help us imitate your great creative idea.

I was concerned about you using the hot glue also--it does not hold up well to heat or cold. The GE Silicone II clear for windows and doors will hold up to both. Several of us have used it on our garden creations made from glass and the sun, rain, water sprinklers, and cold weather haven't caused anything to come apart.

Here's a site that is really good for knowing what kinds of glue to use (see below) Just type in glass to glass or glass to metal, etc. and it will give suggestions.

Your project turned out so good, and for a cost of only $3.00--that's fantastic! Loved seeing your blog and will visit again. ;o)

Shee, Thanks for sharing Melissa's blog with all of us. It was great to see Melissa come over to visit. Her site is wonderful. WIP, your table is wonderful and both of your hurricanes looks great. TFS, Punk

Here they are!
Photobucket
I did use hot glue because it's what I had and was excited to put them together. I don't think I'm going to light the candles because I want to reuse them in the future. I'm interested to hear thoughts about how the glue holds when lit. I messed up more than once getting them straight and was able to pull apart with a little force and peel the dried glue off. So that's nice that I can take them apart and use for other things if I want. (I don't use hot glue very much so wasn't sure how that would be) I think the hurricanes are pretty nice! I was trying to look at them last night through "new eyes" and decide what I thought. Knowing I only paid $3.00 ea. was making me question how they looked. I think they're pretty great.

Melissa - I mentioned I loved these hurricanes but forgot to mention how much I love your blog! I discovered it by searching for something on Rhoda's. You're now saved in my favorites list! :)

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Sheesharee,
Man! Yours look great! If you never mention that you made them, everybody will think you paid a tidy little sum for them. You are your own worst critic. They're wonderful.

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

That's what I'm wondering as well~I want to be able to replace the candle if it gets burned down too far, so would i be able to pull it apart with the GE Silicone on it?
Shee~yours are gorgeous! I'm planning on spotlighting those who have finished products in a little while here.

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

The hurricanes look great Shee. Totally your call, but I really love the way the hurricanes look when they are lit. I have gotten so many compliments on the hurricanes when they are lit, yet no one really notices them when they aren't. Where are you planning to use them? Our D/R area is not well lit, and with DST, it is almost always dark by the time we sit down to eat. I just love the look of burning candles anywhere in the house, but especially on our DR table. I always light the candles even if it is just DH and I having dinner. The lit candles lend a bit of elegance and romance to a room. Just a thought.

Any event, you've done a wonderful job with your hurricanes! Affordable and they are so versatile. I am on the look out year-round for little items to use in mine.

I am planning to go out over the weekend hoping to find some hurricanes and pillars to put one together. I was thinking it would be a nice hostess gift for my DSIL who is hosting Thanksgiving this year. Enjoy and thanks again for sharing the idea!

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

I know a couple other people now IRL that are planning on making some after seeing pics of mine done up. I think I will swing by and grab a couple more of those candles if they have them. I agree, they are more noticeable and give a better WOW factor when lit. The kitchen area get a lot of light but since we're eating later in the day it will be close to dark. My family has never done centerpieces or fancy stuff so last year when I hosted my first Thanksgiving and busted out china I think I shocked them all. lol Hopefully in the future they'll "get" me a little more with this.

I was going to use them on my two Thanksgiving tables. Last night I had each of them sitting on a silver tray with some gourds. I think cranberries would look good in the center also. Might take the leaves out and add to the silver trays. I'll post some photos of what I end up doing Turkey Day!

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Shee, they look awesome! I still haven't gotten out to any more Dollar Trees, so all I have are the candle stick holders.

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Finally, success!!! After going to SIX Dollar Trees I finally found the hurricanes to go with the candle stick holders I bought the other night. Still no luck with the religious-type candle, but I'll keep looking for those or work around it with just a regular pillar. Wahoo!

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Tammy - Yay!! I'm glad you found them. I swear I remember seeing plenty of those hurricanes before. All of a sudden *poof* all gone.

I wish I would've bought more supplies.

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Shee, that is too funny. I can relate to the reactions of some family members who are not obsessed with decorating the dining table. Last Christmas when DB & DSIL arrived, they took one look at my table and started calling me "Aunt Sandy", a reference to Sandra Lee, a food channel show host who includes tablescape ideas as part and parcel of her cooking show. I think there was a compliment in the comment as I've since caught a couple of her episodes. Yes, some are a bit over the top even for me, but she seems very handy and gives ideas as well reasonable and practical sources so that viewers can get a similar "look".

I've always used my wedding china, over the years have collected 14 placesettings of Lenox holiday china and the happy recipient of Chalfonte "Indian Summer" china pattern, all remaining placesettings together with serving pieces -a gift from my DM. "Indian Summer" was her wedding china. I was amazed at how many pieces were intact as the china is over 50 years old. I really have no memory of seeing the china growing up which may explain why there is so much of it left. Seems as though back in the day one didn't use their china but for very special occasions.

Your family is definitely going to be impressed when they see your beautiful hurricanes. I've seen your kitchen space on the decorating forum and I think you will have lot's of "wow" compliments.

I do think they will look great lit on your tables for Thanksgiving dinner!

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Prayer candles should be easy to find, at least they are here in Phoenix. Walmart, Walgreens, Dollar Tree and other similar stores, and many of our big grocery stores carry them too.
I haven't been out to shop yet, tho think the prayer candle is all I need as I think I have the other pieces already. I'd like to put cranberries in mine too, sounds pretty and photos I've seen with them have always appealed to me.
That is neat Melissa actually stopped by. I love her blog.

hugs, Karen

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Karen, I've looked practically everywhere for the prayer candles: 3 grocery stores, 6 $ Trees, and a Super Wal-Mart. I used to see them everywhere, but now, nothing. I hadn't thought of Walgreen's. I'll give them a try. I like your idea of the cranberries. I was thinking I'll do the leaves for now and I had thought I'd try the cranberries too.

 o
RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

WOW!!! I love this! I've been wishing and hoping for some really knock your socks off hurricains but just can't (won't) fork over the $$ for them.
I'm heading out to our local $1 stores and TS to look for parts.

Thanks so much for the link which also lead me on to something else I am all hyped up about as well..

pie in a jar!!

I'll put up a new thread for it.

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Luvs, here's a pic of the front and back of the "Indian Summer" china. Unfortunately, you can't really read the stamp on the back of the plate. It reads "Chalfonte Porzellan, Bavaria Germany Indian Summer". My father was stationed in Germany at the time my parents got engaged. I am now curious, perhaps he purchased the wedding china while stationed in Germany? Will have to ask DM about that. Anyway, here's a pic. You can't really see it in the picture, but the all of the pieces have a narrow gold rim.

RE: Cheap, neat, hurricane centerpiece ideas I found in a blog. .

Went to 2 Dollar Tree stores, several thrift stores, and Michaels. I haven't found the larger vases yet. So far all I've got are the smaller ones which I already had in my vase cabinet. :(

All the prayer candles I found had huge labels on them. I pulled at one corner and it lifted pretty easily so I went ahead and bought them.
I'll keep looking though, these are just too dang neat to give up on.
