Help w/decorating an outside Topiary - Pictures

| This will be our first Christmas after the new addition and remodel. We have a new porch and I put two faux Topiaries on each side of the door.
I want to decorate them for Christmas but I don't know how.
Since we live in a rural area, there isn't much traffic at night (if any) to see lights on them, so I'd like something to decorate them for the daytime.
Do you all have any pictures of what you did with your's? Here are some pictures taken earlier this year when it was kind of bare and not completely finished.

| What a pretty house! Have you thought of ribbon bows or loops tucked around in the topiary, with a few stars, berries, that kind of thing? I think that would make it special and unique. Your topiaries have such a nice shape and size, I would probably go light on the decos. Just play around with them, step back onto your walkway and take a look -- you will be able to see what looks best. If you want the western look, you could always do cowboy boots, hats, horseshoes, that sort of thing. Even some of the chili pepper lights -- they can be attractive even when not on. Good luck, Lee |

| You might try to tie a big floppy bow around each planter. P.S. Your house is very charming. |

| Thank you! I never thought about bows or ribbons. Pretty ribbons wrapped around the pot with a big bow would be just perfect. What about the oval window on the left? It has built in shutters on the inside so I can't decorate there. I may be able to put a battery candle in the window, but do you recommend something else for the outside of it? I am hopeless when it comes to my imagination and decorating! lol |

| Lovely home and your porch is really nice. I think you should use red on the trees so it will really show up. I like OA's suggestion about the big red bow on the pot--that might be all you need to add a pop of color and really make them look classy. I can just imagine a nice white bench or chairs sitting under that cute window too--and maybe a white corner shelf over on the other side of the porch or even a hanging planter with some light colored flowers in it. Can you tell I just love porches? You're a lucky woman to have such a nice one. ;o) Luvs |

| Unless you are really averse to lights, I'd still put lights on the topiaries as you can see them from inside. We have no near neighbors and a very long driveway but turn the outdoor lights on every night at dusk whether company is coming or not. I love to see them from inside. You could also do as earlier suggested with ribbon and/or other decorations which will look nice in daylight. Your oval window is beautiful as is and I wouldn't do a thing with it. If a candle fits inside that would be nice. Maybe some evergreen boughs on the metal table below the oval window - not sure what that piece is but it looks fantastic. Cute pup! :-) |

| luvs, after the extensive remodel and add-on, porch furniture will have to wait. But I long for some white wicker furniture in the large area of the porch. Here's what I have there now, and there's a smaller matching planter under a window on the opposite side. I've since moved the smaller planter, and scooted over the flowers on the porch to the corner (which are now dead, lol), but I love these two old world style planters.

| Wow love those planters. I would fill them with evergreen boughs and anything else you can get your hands on that is evergreen. Pine, holly, cedar--mix it up with just any cippings of evergreen plants. Check with a place that sells Christmas trees and see what they have. Often they cut branches off. Stick in cones, and a big red bow |

| Hi there, Oak. I too was thinking how fun it'd be to decorate those planters for the holidays! Good ideas on that from oilpainter. As for your topiary trees, definitely a big red bow around each urn. I'd buy the SPARKLY picks, berries or poinsettias, or mix them up, and stick them in the trees. Maybe some little birds too. I use the picks in my Xmas trees and just love them. You can always wrap empty boxes prettily and sit them around the urns. That is such a beautiful porch and will be a lot of fun for you to decorate for holidays. That's a handsome dog, is he a Pointer? hugs, Karen |

| I like what the others have suggested. I also think the porch would look good with artificial spruce branches spiraled around the brick posts with ribbon. Be sure and post a picture for us when you decide how to decorate it. Your hound dog is cute and looks like he posed nice to have his picture taken.LOL I'm sure he just wants to be out there with you. I like the storm door you have with the bricks. That looks good. | Karen, yes, that's a Pointer. Gracie. She's in almost every picture I take because she won't leave my side. lol. We have a large row of Evergreen trees, so I think I'll cut some boughs like oilpainter suggested and get some red berry sprays or something to stick inside. I'll do the same with the topiaries. Great ideas! And inexpensive too! |

| Love your porch!! Don't know where you live but it would be great if you had a sled & or pr of white ice skates kind with the high lace-ups. Could put lights around the windows beside the door. Can probably use Weldbond to glue up couple of stainless steel hooks to hold in the 2 upper corners so they are hardly noticeable. If you have any barnwood or old fence boards you can get your hands on they make great set of ski's if you just shape the top ends of 2 boards, then add arrangement of greens from your yard & bow(be sure to use weatherproof ribbon. I did that couple of yrs go for gifts. Have fun & enjoy your new porch! Jan |

| Your planters are gorgeous! How great that you have evergreen trees you can use, that will look great in them. Be sure to share pics with us after you get them all prettied up for the holidays, okay? Luvs |

| Oak, my apologies to Gracie! She's beautiful, not handsome! I've always admired the look of Pointers at the dog shows I've gone to or watched on TV. I always root for one to win the Sporting Group! Their sleek 'lines' remind me of the Whippets I have in a lot of ways. hugs, Karen |

| Karen, I had never heard of Whippets and looked them up online. What beautiful dogs! Are they athletic because of their build? Most people don't want a Pointer for a pet, only use them for hunting, but they think they're too hyper to be inside even though they've never had an inside pointer. I've had several, (Grace has a big fenced in back yard), and as long as they have their own chew toys, they're like a "fireside dog." Grace is my bestest friend in the world. :) Thanks luvs! I'll be sure to take some pictures. But remember, I have two left hands! lol |

You could also make some fluffy bows for the point of your topiary. Leave several "tails". and wind them down through the greenery..pushed into the leaves a bit. Gracie is a beautiful decoration...she only needs a red bow :^) |

I know you are proud of that wonderful porch and precious pooch too. I bet big red bows and shiny red balls will really show up well and throw some lights on there too. Also I would put a garland and bow on that pretty oval window. It shouldn't matter how isolated you are, I know I decorate mainly for myself. Syble |

Hi Oakleyok! We live in the country (mountains) too, so I know what you mean about decorating the porch when nobody will see it. I'd put a big red bow around each of the topiary pots and then hang a swag in the oval window. A swag rather than a wreath because I think the swag will accent your pretty window better. Lynn |

Oakley, yes Whippets are athletic, as they are closely related to greyhounds. Just half the size. A lot of folks don't know what they are, or think they are skinny ugly dogs! I can understand most people thinking a hunting dog wouldn't be a good house dog like Gracie is. Misconceptions abound. Great Danes are one of the best APT dogs you can have! LOL, who'd have thought with their size. Whippets are champion bed-bugs and couch potatos by the way. If any of you like seeing neat dog pictures (with some cats too) here's an album of whippet photos I've saved as they were so "typically Whippet" and fun to see. These are NOT MY dogs (well actually, two are) tho I do have an album of my dogs and cats on my home page y'all are welcome to see too. Enjoy! And to keep this Holiday related, a couple are ready for Christmas even. LOL hugs, Karen |

| I like the swag idea for the oval window. This is a stupid question, but how would I hang it with the brick and the vinyl part around the window? |

| Hi Oakleyok, I love your house AND the beautiful surroundings~you must love all that space! I read on the HD forum you're 'from' Ca. Me too, but now in Austin, TX and LOVING it. Anything's gotta be better than Ca! Your porch makes the house look so inviting...there's just something about a porch. Your Gracie sounds like my 'boy' Jaxson Brown. I 'rescued' him off the highway at 11:30 at night and for some reason, knew he was meant to be mine. I already had 3 cats, but wanted a dog, just didn't know what kind or when to get one~he took care of both those questions. LOL He's an Australian cattle dog, and loves to try and herd me, thinking he's playing. Goes everwhere(including the bathroom!)with me! As for how you would hang a swag, is there any place to stick a piece of wire thru, maybe up further above the window? Otherwise, double face tape is your answer. ;o) |

| I'm from Oklahoma, not California. Double face tape sounds great! I'll get some fishing line also. Ah, that's a great story about Jaxson. Grace follows me everywhere too..sometimes it drives me crazy! That's why she's in most of the pictures I take of the house. lol |

| Not a 'true Californian here, either. Lived in IL until I was in my 40's. My Son-I-L has family in Norman, Granfather/uncles, I think. Jaxson drives me crazy too. Especially when i'm out in the garage working on a project and he thinks he's 'helping'! ;o) |

| patty cakes, I didn't know you lived in "Ill-Annoy" for so many years. I can see why you left! We can't wait to get out of here, the older I get, the worse the winters bother me. I'm a sunshine, beachy type person! We looked at Florida, but it's way too expensive to live there, so we are looking at Texas now. My son will be able to transfer there in a year or so & we are seriously thinking of leaving "Ill-Annoy" and settling in Texas! I am ready right now, but many things to work out before we can go!! |

| I lived in Norman for five years, that's where I met my husband. We were both going to OU. And we just assumed our kids would go to OU, right? Nope, they went to OSU. We are a house divided. lol. Norman's a great town though. |
RE: Help w/decorating an outside Topiary - Pictures

| oakleyok, have you seen the "house divided" signs? I've also seen the front 'license plates' used as tree toppers. |
