It can't be this hard! (Honda Wiper Blades)

The instructions on the package say "Remove old wiper blades" and that's where I get hung up. The car is a 2000 Honda Accord. Where am I supposed to be squeezing, prying, or unscrewing the old blades?

Unfortunatley, wiper blade design is not standardized. There seems to a different fastening method for each manufacturer of blades.

I'm not familar with the Honda original blades, so I'll give some general clues that I've found on my cars.

If you have the usual 2-blade for the windshield, go to the passenger side and examine that wiper arm and blade. (That blade, when in the parked position, is nearer the edge of the car and easier to see.) Look at where the wiper blade assembly attaches to the wiper arm.

(If you have a sport UTE, go look at the rear wiper arm. Its probably of the same design and is much easier to examine.)

Does the end of the wiper arm end in a "U" shape commonly called the "J" type. If so, look for a small release button or protrusion. Push this down and push the wiper blade toward the shaft end of the wiper arm. The wiper blade assembly should slide from the end of the J shape. Then its's a matter of raising the wiper arm away from the windshield and fiddling with the blade until you find how it comes off. You may end up rotating the blade nearly upsidedown to get room to slide the j-hook out of the slot.

Another type of wiper arm ends with a straight end with a hole in its end. The blade assembly stays on the arm by a pin or protrusion in this hole. This type releases by pushing down on a spring clip to push the protrusion out of the hole and then slide the assembly off the arm. A varation on this type has a small lever on the side of the blade assembly. Press this down to release. Another style has a small opening in the side of the blades assembly for insertion of a small tool like a screwdriver blade. The object of all of these is to push the spring loaded pin or protrusion out of the hole so the blade assembly can slide off.

If the blade package is clear plastic, look to see if there is a folded instruction sheet inside. If you are sure that you have the correct replacement blade, open the package and retrieve the instruction sheet. It may illustrate your type of assembly.

Wiper blades are available in two levels: one is the bare wiper blade itself, and the second is the complete assembly of the wiper blade plus its holder. Its best to purchase the entire assembly because of the many variations in design and the difficulty of putting a plain blade into the holder. Some designs require bending metal while others are not expected to be refilled.

If you bought it at a auto parts store, many will install it for you if you ask. Watch them do it, so you know how to do it next time. When I first started replacing blades, I got confused until I did it a couple of times, now they're literally "a snap".

Ok, the Honda GCV1600 started easily... I can't say I notice any difference over my older B&S, but I was surprised because it started on the first pull (well maybe I gave it a couple of short soft pulls to recheck the oil..another point, later). The choke is interesting, it is a manual pull to set, then when one closes the autokill bail the choke start to move to off, thus one needs to be ready to pull the rope as soon as they close the bail. The engine is also rated at "2", on a scale of 10 (10 is bad) cleanliness. So I can feel better about producing less pollution when mowing with it. Something to "feel" good about. On the oil, the manual is silent on the capacity, but the machine came with the usual short quart, I think it maybe be 1.5 pints. The suggestion is put it all in, and I'm sure many/most do. However, on putting about 3/4th of it in and checking the dip stick, I see it is full. Remains at the full mark after running for a few minutes. Of course, one is cautioned not to overfill, it is a splash lub engine. It seems like a serious error on my part or theirs, when they ship a special size oil container it should be the size needed to fill the oil tank, this protects the consumer from overfilling while guaranteeing, at least this one time, that the oil tank is full. Admittedly, it is hard to see clean oil on the plastic narrow cone shaped dip stick, but I can see it is wet to the full mark with less than the full container put in the tank. If the Honda is as good as my past B&S engines it will last until I don't need a mower any more. At my age I figure within the next 5-10 years I'm going to have to move off of the big property and take up a easier life stile in a Condo of other everything is done for you environment.

I've had this lawnmower now for about 2 years ie, 2 grass cutting seasons. The first week I had it, the drive belt kept coming off. I kept putting it back on and it eventually stayed on with no problems. Never did figure out why it kept coming off. At the start of the second season, the roto-stop lever stopped functioning. I could not keep the blades turning upon release of the lever. So I had to bungie cord the lever in the forward position to keep em' turning. It is more difficult to start now because the blades are engaged all the time. I just ordered the roto stop control assembly for $30.00. I have also experienced the lack of seals at the bagging connection area. I haven't experience a great muching mower yet and this one still does not qualify. There are still grass trails occuring. The fancy 2 bladed system does not impress me, just harder to sharpen. The motor is great. I haven't had any problems at all. I give the motor 5 out of 5 and the rest 2.5 out of 5. This is an expensive average mower. I expected better for the money. I believe my next mower will be a lawnboy. I thought Honda was a better mower, it isn't. I had the used lawnboy I bought before the Honda for 15 years and it ran flawlessly until it gave up and totally died one day. GS

Honda HRX has major enine problems. It should be recalled. It is your gas, and this year will be everyone's gas. The Honda authorized repair shop mechanic told me the forth time it was returned (2nd season). It appears that the new EPA gas additive started up here in the high altitudes last year ahead of the rest of the nation. It makes the valves sticky. After several trips to the Honda authorized repair shop (and seeing the literally dozens of HRX waiting for repair) they told me the secret. They take out the spark plug and spray lots and lots of carb cleaner in the master cylender to lubricate the valves. It does work, but gosh only knows what damage it does to the rings. Honda Lawnmower warranty ranks among the worst experience in my lifetime. You may learn that you don't have a warranty as described in an English dictionary. For those of you beginning this nightmare, this advice is offered: Customer Relations Office 4900 Marconi Drive Alpharetta, GA 30005-8847 (770) 497-6400 fax (678) Â 339-2519 Write a letter and FAX it to this secret Fax. Honda does not beleive in e-mail. Your not going to enjoy the phone tree. Or the short calls from Honda between 8 & 5 asking you to "call them again" and go through the phone tree. The first year, Honda was a dream lawn mower. Never, ever again will I buy any product with the Honda name on it. The night sweats from the lawnmower are just beginning to subside.

Honda or Snapper?

No, new isn't a necessity, but used Snappers are few and far between - at least for what I've seen. I'd love to have one. I currently have a 4 year old commercial Honda mower that in my opinion doesn't cut well. I feel it leaves far too many single uncut blades of grass behind. You actually see more the day after mowing. It looks as if they are being blown over instead of drawn up into the blades. I've tried different wheel heights, a gator type blade by Oregon with a spacer provided by Honda, and even using only the lower vac blade without the upper blade - all with the same results. I'm stumped, and constantly reminded of the poor cut quality along with how much I paid for it. My 16 year old Honda that my inlaws are using leaves a perfect cut behind, so I'm looking to sell or trade in this one. Honda denies any problems.
