92 dodge tranny

If the clutches are slipping on this 3 speed auto tranny,

Can the clutches be tightened down to help stop slipping by the outside bolts on the tranny? I read in chilton auto repair but wasn't sure if this is what they ment.

The clutches are in line in the center of the transmission, and are applied by pressurized transmission fluid through passages that go through the valve body, the transmission housing, the front pump and then to the clutch drums. (There are other designs that have center housing supports that also serve to provide fluid flow.) If you have a clutch that is slipping, it can be caused by a loss of pressure. The pressure loss could be a filter, or pump problem (unlikely). Or it could be a loss of pressure through any of the seals that direct the fluid flow to the clutch drum, bad clutch piston to drum seals (common), or of course simply worn out clutches.

Its likely you will need an expert to rebuild the transmission.

If there is no adjustment then why do they say to adjust the clutches after every fluid change. Is recomended by dodge on these 3 speed transmissions. So there is adjustment that can be made to tighten them up after each fluid change. Anyone with any knowledge about these trannies on here?

rustyj, I am wondering WHY you are contemplating a major modification to the Murray drive train. You did not give any description of a "problem" the machine might be having. As most of us are "familiar" with your "personal MO" regarding acquisition, repair, and eventual trade or sell of "donated" Outdoor Power Equipment, if this machine's hydro tranny operates correctly, it should be "very sell-able" with the current tranny set-up. For the amount of "scrounging" and fitting up required to retro-fit the engine and chassis with a "gear type" manual trans, you would actually be better off to just use the running engine as a "donor" prime mover in another candidate tractor with a bad engine. Is there supposed to be a problem in the drive train of this newly acquired treasure (as in "One man's trash is another man's treasure)? I say that with a gleam in my eye and a grin on my face, (and a bit of a groan at my lame humor too).

I have not owned a Dodge Caravan, but I have friends who did, and I've owned simlar engines in the sedans. First off, you didn't say how many miles were on your vehicle, but there is a maintence schedule for the oxygen sensors. These get replaced about every 80,000 miles. At that point, the 'required maintance' light will turn on. There is a danger of overheating the catalytic convertor if the oxygen sensors are being ignored by the engine mamagement system. The fuel mix may be nominal or on the rich side (default starting conditions) and if one is stalled in traffic for a lengthy period or the engine left runing while parked, the catalytic convertor may overheat. The engine management system will ignore the oxygen sensors if it receives signals outside an acceptable range. I haven't heard about wiring problems. The main gripe I've seen are transmissions. Because of the built-in automatic adjustment (done by timing the application and release of clutches)the user doesn't get a hint that his transmission is failing until near the fateful day. Its only a few more miles after the first 'glitch' is felt to complete outage. In one case, my neighbor's transmission had an early failure at 36,000 miles. A fastener inside the tranny broke. Later transmissions seem to be better.

Have the trouble codes been read? No where in your post did I see that you took the car to a dealer or transmission shop and have a diagnostic done on the tranny. It may be nothing more than something disconnected or a failing sensor.

Three reasons for this: (1) the oddly-proportioned Dodge Charger sedan has received a cool reception; we want our muscle cars the way we remember them; (2) unlike the Mustang which has been in continuous production for the last 42 years, or the Camaro which went through four generations; the Challenger look is defined by only one generation, the 1970-74 models. Veer from it and it won't be recognizable as a Challenger. (a later Mitsubishi 4-cylinder coupe was sold as the Challenger, but that was a completely different car except for the name). And, (3) the definitive Challenger, the 1970 model, was a visibly more contemporary looking car than the late-'60s Mustangs and Camaros, and is easier to recreate in a modern car. It needs few changes to look modern - mainly, color-keyed bumpers, filled-out wheelwells, and a few minor proportion adjustments. The basic look of the original still works.

Hmmmmm.....

You asked if the "clutches" were adjustable, they are not. Now most transmissions that use bands, can have adjustments for the bands, and they can indeed be external and should be checked during a transmission service. BUT, once the transmission is already slipping, its too late for an adjustment to fix that. Besides, a band problem will make the transmission slip in a specific gear when its needed to be applied, it is not used with any of the others. Since you didn't specify that the problem is occurring in a single gear range such as " it only slips in second gear" you did not appear to be asking about band adjustments.

Maybe some of the others that read this site will tell you who has the knowledge and experience to answer your transmission questions. If so maybe that person will respond.....
