Too soon to replace tires?

My 2004 Subaru Forester 215/60 16 94H (T rating seems a good choice for replacing all 4 at once) has its original Yokohoma (sp?) tires on it. Miles on the tires about 40,000. The tread is "ok", more than the 3/32" and appear "even" looking across the tread. I'd guess the tires are good for 50,000 miles total. One has a slow leak I've been living with (pump it up ever two or three days from 20 psi back to 30 psi).

We're getting ready to drive the car from NJ to Florida and back in a few weeks and I need as a minimum to get the slow leak fixed. That round trip and local driving will be about 3,000 miles.

But, I'm thinking the tires are 5 years old, and at least 80% worn out, why not just replace the set before the trip?

My Subaru dealer has offered a set of Pirelli tires with a "T" speed rating (again, H came on the car, but I understand the "lesser speed" T will have better ride and tread life) for $443 complete (tax and all)... which sounds pretty good. I don't know what model the tire is, but it has to be the "regular" street tire - an all weather tread, I'll check, don't remember what was said on the telephone.

My reason for posting: If I replace the tires for the above reason am I being foolish, or wasteful given the description I provide on the existing tires? I know I'd feel better going down the highway for 12 hours a day with new tires on the car.

Your not buying a set of tires, you are buying security and safety for you and your family.

It's never foolish to be safe. There's really no such thing as 'too soon to replace tires'. There is such a thing as too late. Though imo your tires sound like they'd go a while, you've got enough use out of them to not feel like you're wasting money replacing them. Put your mind at ease, be safe, and spring for the new tires. jmo

At the end of last season I did use Round Up on it. Also a friend of mine advised me to once it looked brownish to take a razor and scrape it where I could and also spray it with bleach so it would go down into the roots.. I also did that.. I don't think it will come back this year and if it does I'll be on top of it.. Yes if you burn it, It can even be fatal to some. It will go into your lungs and If it turns skin red and causes major discomfort imagine what it will do you lungs. My other plan may be done simultaneously as the planting of the azalea's. I had a large tree stump in the center of my back yard from a tree that was apparently cut down years ago. The removal of it was one of the first things I did when I bought the house. Reason I mention this is because of it, I don't have a Flat yard. That and the fact that I have I'd say 1/4 of the yard with Zoysia grass and the other 3/4 you can call grass or weeds... What I was going to do with this is take the 1/4 that is Zoysia grass and remove it and 2 inches of ground under it and put it on my deck. (yes I know Keep it moist) then rototill the entire back yard and side yard (where the Azaleas will be)... Once I turn it all over, rent one of them 500 Lbs rollers from local Rental shop and drag it across the yard and flatten it. (Yes, I know slight slop away from house...) Once this is done if my wife hasn't killed me for making the largest mud pit I want to take the Zoysia and make plugs from it and spread them around to cover the back and side yards. Once the plugs are all in, I'll take some regular bluegrass seed and spread it over the rest. then finally cover it all with hay. My hopes are that with in 2 to 4 years to have the full back yard in Zoysia and most importantly Flat. From what I've read Zoysia likes 20/20/20 does anyone here know where I can get some cheap?

Hey, I have Lupine sprouts too! They were sown back in December, and the containers just emerged from under a snow pile. These are hardy little buggers. V1 and Betty, I also just sowed Lupine seeds this past weekend, but soaked them before sowing. I boiled some water, poured it over the seeds, and soaked them in it for 24 hours. The water will cool down, which is okay. You can also nick the seed coat, rub them with coarse sandpaper, or cold stratify in the fridge. All of these techniques supposedly allow the seed coat to soften faster, and the embryo inside can swell and break through sooner. We'll see if it works!

Thank you all for the encouragement. No we can not be friendly after everything he was cruel some of the things he said were unforgivable and beyond hurtful they were evil. I do not know why he turned in to what he is now but he is not the same man. His family I tried to stay with but they just accepted her with out a problem oh I am sure they told Tom they did not approve. I took care of his granm and cleaned her behind and bathed he and healed bed sores for months, his father loved me and was a good friend he died several years ago. If they needed me I was there, they had a choice to say they would not accept her. He left May 25 and wa moved in with her by July and we weren't separated (I did not know) he kept me hanging on for months. I have met a nice man he knows what I am dealing with, he is supportive and he is very good to me. My family likes him alot my mom especially, he was with me when she died. You are right women are strong stronger than men. I was strong enough to take care of my mother alot during her sickness. I am a nurse so I know what she was going thur. I kept my promise, I bathed her and made her look good as possible before she died. She was on a respirator and before my father saw her when she was going I kept that promise. Bob was with me all thur it. I am seeing a doc and am on meds changed several times. In the four years I have had to get my son off drugs, he started using when his father tip over our family. Tom knew he was using but did nothing(my son lived with them and stayed away from me because I would of known and done something) when I finally got to him he weighed 117 and 5'10. He is in school(college) now and with me doing great I am so proud. No I am not making all this up on the stress scale I win top number. I am not sure how I deal with it. Some days I don't I have pity parties. I have started knitting and giving the afghans and things to my family and nursing homes. Believe it or not Sept.22 I have to have a total r knee replacement. Bob is going to take care of me (bless his heart). Please put me in your thoughts. Deb

I've placed a few dozen Pentair variable speed equipment sets into service since they came out. The oldest is probably 4 years old this summer. I had my best luck with the 4x160 controlled by an Easy Touch 8. The VS3050 controlled by an Intellitouch 7 or 9 was way over my buyers heads in grasping the technology the controller offered. They had difficulty following the menu's for configuration. I'll admit they offer a bunch of avenues but IMO it's total overkill for residential pool customers. I only had a few service calls on the units and have no idea what the problems were because I just dispatched the call to my local Pentair rep and they handled them. To their credit they were a lot more prompt than they used to be back in the late 90's and early new millennium. I switched to Jandy in summer 2000 because of the poor after the sale warranty support from Pentair back then. It was a shame 'cause I was a long time dealer for PacFab before Pentair took the line. I've only placed 7 or 8 of the new E-pump equipments sets from Jandy and had 2 service calls on them, one I ran was a cracked impeller and the other I'd have to ask my super what the problem was. I suppose I'm the last builder on the planet to jump on this bandwagon, I still prefer a 2-speed for those looking to enjoy electrical savings, guess I'm just old school. This pool isn't going to be an E-pump, we were working within a budget and I had to achieve as many of the things they wanted in that select amount. See ya, Kelly

Put new tires on. As a trucker I'll tell you your life is riding on those tires. A friend I worked with complained to the company about the front tires on the rig he drove. Tread was below 3/32nd inch. As usuall they said, "Run em today and we'll fix em tonite."

He's dead.

You have to get the slow leak fixed anyway. Most likely, there is something in the tire and if you have been putting a lot miles on it, the repair may not be as effective as it could have been.

At 40,000 miles, you are not wasting much - go ahead and put on a new set.

By the way, I presume that you have been follwing the snow storm report. There is at least a foot of snow everywhere from NJ through North Carolina. You're gonna need all snow traction you can get, and wet pavement grip. AWD is going to be handy!

Thanks, I get a set of Pirelli P4 All Season tomorrow, and from the Subaru dealer. I was surprised his prices are competitive... and I'm sure he has the expertise to catch any "items" on the Forester that may be getting weak... i.e., they are experts on the car too.

We got about a foot of snow, I had to plow the drive before we could get out - still it is nice having the Forester AWD. And, I purchased a 2009 Suzuki SX4 a couple of months back. It has switchable FWD, AWD and Locked (more like 4WD) for speeds below 36 mph. With all that traction I also note my Chevy pick-up with an auto locking differential worked when I took the trash to the street Sunday night. I had a little trouble getting the Chevy up the hill part of the drive, but it made it. The SX4 and Forester go up without a pause... old tire and new.

Worn tires, existing slow leak, live in NJ, winter weather coming, long family trip coming up, why even ask. Safety and peace of mind should come first.

we have a 2000 caravan. 50k miles. original michelin tires. tread is low. we put on new michelin X tires. 80k warranty. might last as long as last tires? short trips. around town. no highway use at all.
