Drain radiator in 2005 Chevy Colorado Pickup

It seems I was right, there is no cooling system drain plug on the 2005 Chevy Colorado pickup truck. Mine is the lowest model with manual transmission and 4 cylinder...not that that matters.

What I found was the recommendation to drain by removing the lower radiator hose. This sounds pretty messy to me.

Years ago, and many cars ago, I installed one of the "Back Flush" taps in the heater hose to flush the cooling system. Here I figured this was an improvement over draining and then filling and draining several times to get an almost complete change in coolant. So, I am thinking I will install a Back Flush. Any advice? What am I overlooking?

You are not missing anything.

At times past, draining the cooling system through the little valve on the bottom of the radiator was a chore and took a long time. Several people found it was much faster and gave a more complete drain to disconnect the bottom radiator hose. Make sure you relieve the coolant pressure first!

Automotive manufacturers saw this as a cost saving boon. Leaving that little dohickey off the radiator eliminated losses from broken and/or manfunctioning drain valves. Professional auto shops were draining the radiators by hose removal anyway.

Thanks, I assumed it was a mfg and warranty expense driven item...I did wonder if just on the lower cost products, or all, by all or most manufacturers. Not an important point.

From the end-user perspective:
1) I am concerned about wear-and-tear on the lower hose on earlier leaks there - suppose with a 5 year flush interval one should expect to replace the hoses on the second change anyway.
2) I read a discussion elsewhere that raised, even when using the lower hose removal method, the issue of the thermostat blocking drainage. Are these real concerns? With the drip-along spigots of the past I never noticed any reduced flow as the flow rate didn't overtax the air bleed-through,or whatever is needed. I of course have the radiator filler cap off.
3) Is there any support for the installation of a "reverse flush" in the heater hose? I have used this many years ago, and didn't have any problems, but I have not continued to use it in the past 20 years of car ownership.

Personally I think this is a really interesting discussion. I am an engineer at Honda R&D near Columbus, OH. At my location, there are over a thousand white collar workers, mostly technical. Within a hundred mile radius of me, there are a 4 Honda assembly plants, employing around 10,000 people. At other sites in the US and Canada, there are probably another 15,000 workers. Each of these plants is turning out thousands of new Hondas per day. Nearly every Honda/Acura sold in the US (by volume) is made in the US. The engines, transmissions, every major component. Furthermore, Honda actually *exports* cars from the US, something that the Big 3 can barely talk about. Sure, there are niche cars like the S2000 roadster that are 100% Japanese, but that is a tiny part of our market. I think these are pretty impressive numbers, especially if you consider that Honda is only something like the 7th largest market share in the US. Its been here since 1979, I'd wager that in those 27 years Honda has contributed significantly to Americans and their way of life. There are a lot of secure $25/hr plus full benefits jobs available in Ohio because of Honda. The US auto industry lost their way in the oil crises. They haven't been able to turn it around since then. They concentrate too much on short-sighted markets like giant fuel-guzzling SUVs. Its not that the Big 3 makes bad cars, its that they make cars that aren't in demand. Compare a Focus to a Civic. A Taurus to an Accord. Sure, those Fords might last 200k miles, but I'd much rather spend that time in a nice Accord than a hard plastic Taurus. I would rather support the thousands of American workers who build Hondas than support a few suits in Detroit and drive a Mexican Dodge. I'll post to sent this item to the archives. As far as I'm concerned, the auto locking differential is great, at least when going forward. I need the reverse only when backing out of my parking place. I need the forward traction when coming up the hill on my driveway... and it works. The lock makes this pickup come up where I have seen front wheel sedans have trouble. This is especially true if I can find some strips of clear blacktop, one wheel in that track and I can't detect any slippage. I recommend the ALD if you don't need AWD or 4WD. And, the ALD doesn't add any significant weight or friction - thus there is no loss in gas mileage that comes with AWD/4WD. The option cost is very low, as I recall. It was the main reason I bought the Colorado over a Ranger, Ford didn't offer a locking (rear) differential of any kind.

Jerry, I would say it is the blower motor resistor. Check out this site. It does a better job of explaining the repair than I can. The repair is for a 2004. But I would think that yours is the same. I don't know anything about the seal problems, but a Toyota with only 76K miles could have a lot of life left. As for $3K, I again say look at the "book value" to see what it should sell for and look at the private sale value, that should be less than what you'd have to pay at a dealer. Again, I'd look at the book on Chevy and Ford (S10 and Ranger to be in the same size range as the Toyota) and see if it is possible to get one a couple of years newer and a few miles less used for the same money. I was talking to a fisherman I "bumped" into a couple of days back. He had noted my Chevy Colorado and asked how I like it. He had a Chevy S10 of some years, don't remember, but I do remember he said he had about 300,000 on it. Yes he had replace a number of things, but he engine/transmission/drive-train was original equipment. My 1988 Dodge Ram 50, similar size, had about 100,000 on it when I traded it in (gave away) on the Chevy and the only problems I had were: Head Gasket and Carb. It was a 4WD and the drive train/clutch seemed to be in "perfect" shape. A mechanic at the dealer bought the truck, and I see it from time to time, he's still driving it to work. He said he replaced the carb, I don't know if anything else has gone. Point? 76K miles isn't a lot of miles on a vehicle if it has been maintained (mostly just oil change/filter change).

I bought a dodge intrepid from a friend. 4 yrs old. He was original owner. Changed coolant right away. Pulled bottom radiator hose off and brown mud came out. It looked like coco. Took off upper hose and back flushed radiator and lots more crud came out. Filled it back up with water and got some radiator flush stuff. Put that in and did the cleaning process and flushed it some more. Drove it for 5 yrs and never had any issues. Got lucky I guess.

Thanks, I am encouraged that pulling the lower hose may be better than using (none exists on my pickup) drain spigot. I will be sure to do it in a location that will not block my other vehicles from getting in/out, while I'm off looking for a new hose to replace the one I damaged..all hoses are 6 years old.

I just have to wait for some warmer weather.
