same old question - high test vs. regular gas

about a year ago started using reg gas in my 2007 lexus (because of gas prices) I don't see any difference -but wondering if I'm hurting the engine in the long run -

The people that know the answer to your question wrote the owners manual. Check there.

I feel your pain but do the math. Will the money save be enough to buy a new engine in the amount of time it takes to die? Are you willing to part with the car (and the bulk of its' value) due to an early death? One tank isn't going to do something you'll notice, but over time you will be compromising the function and condition of your engine.

I occasionally put 89 in my Lincoln but almost always use the 93 or 91, whatever the particular station has. Keeping a good (paid for!) car in good condition is easier and cheaper than beating it up and having expensive repairs.

Just thought I'd share more specifics of what I found when I ran different brands' gasolines in my '93 B&S. I had been using 76 mid-grade for the longest time before I discovered Chevron, and while it is a TOP TIER fuel, it produced way too much exhaust. I'm guessing the age of the engine might have been a factor for the excessive emissions. Shell mid-grade was almost just as good as Chevron for me; it just humored me how the exhaust scent slightly resembled that of diesel fumes. Chevron is by far the best for me; I think its additive helps to produce a somewhat "sweet" exhaust scent, and there's very little "after-scent" once you're done mowing, on regular. It's quite difficult to tell one has even mowed the lawn using a gas engine! One thing I know for sure: I would definitely recommend against going with ARCO. Using virtually any other brand's regular would be better than using their mid-grade. It does kinda go back to the "you get what you paid for" mantra. Even with lawnmowers, I believe that additives do matter... especially if you want to make sure that your lawnmower stays with you a couple more years.

The first one I had was Ricar when the house was being built. They came out about 4 times. It would work when they left, but still never enough power. Then I would have trouble with the hoses not going in or coming out. Then I got electrolux to come out and they put in all new ports or outlets, and new hoses. Still not enough power and the same with the hose problems. They did do a few things in the attic with the pipes. Now I have Drainvac which is the high powered unit I got the electrician to install. Great suction power but hoses still get stuff in the pipes. If I only had clear pipes I could see where the blockage is. We have a call into the head people at the original company that installed the pipes. It was a Hide A Hose system. We are hoping they will recommend someone who really knows how the install and service them. I have almost 9k in this system now and still not happy. My sister built a new house the same time and did not want it. She has a rainbow somebody gave her. She is laughing all the time about what I am going thru. I never had any trouble before until I got Hide a Hose.

That is a wonderful write-up. Thanks for taking the time to write it. We have a Viking cooktop and your observatoins match ours in using it for 7+ years. Alas, we don't have a grill so nothing to add here. We do have a portable infra-red grill we bought for our boat. And our experience matches yours. It is great for stakes but everything else will get torched from below, but no heat from above. They should call this steak grills and be done with it. BTW, we don't have the boat and never use it. FYI, we have a cermaic cooker now which we use for slow smoking (e.g. 12-18 hours). I have used it rain and shine including in snow. It will use only one single bag of charcoal for 24 hours. It has an automated controller for temps and I am able to manage it from the PC inside our house (through a program I have written). It is able to maintain its temp within 2% or even better! Not saying you should go that way but it is worth considering what you can do with an outside unit for at least slower cooks. You only have to put up with the weather when you load and unload it. And of course, it will create a BBQ which rivals or betters more restaurants. Again, much appreciate the feedback.

Representatives from the company have been saying for years- “It is cosmetic”. Shards of glass coming off the liner mixed with a convection fan, is not cosmetic. ”I have never heard of it happening.” http://www.wolfblueovenchipping.com/case-information/ ”It only has affected a very small number of appliances” and yet some here have had three or more in a row that failed. “It was fixed years ago.” Last case in this forum was reported this year on an induction range. Previously Wolf has brought oven after oven during the full warranty time. They gave this person a hard time. The “M” oven was designed to make it easier to repair. It has been affected too. One tactic Wolf has used in the past is to upsell if possible when people have issues with something like the “E” oven. They get them to pay the difference to buy an M knowing it has the same issues and these fail too.. Even if they had the fix tomorrow, it would take several years to know if it really worked because some go bad after the warranty is out. This happened to me and they would not give me an estimate to repair, only that it would start at $800. I have read of repairs costing $2500. I personally have had issues with blue enamel in Dacor, Electrolux and Wolf so I would not buy blue in anything except Gaggenau.

On high-test in the Lincoln. I didn't realize that any Ford products required 91 or 93.

There's a sticker right inside the gas cap flap that says "premium recommended."

I copied/pasted this info from cartalk.com:

In a high-compression engine that's designed to run on premium fuel, premium will provide some additional power. But, if you want to save some money, you can probably still fill up with regular, unleaded fuel much of the time.

An engine with a high compression ratio has some advantages. It squeezes more power of the same-size engine. But, it requires you to spend more for every tank of gas, to get that extra power. In other words, instead of manufacturing a car with a larger, but lower-compression-ratio engine, manufacturers are using high compression engines, and foisting the additional cost back to you - by forcing you to buy premium gas to get that extra performance.

Using regular gas can cause knocking and pinging. They're noises, which are signs that the gas and air mixture in your car's cylinders isn't burning exactly as intended. The sound you hear is the result of the fuel and air mixture combusting unevenly in the cylinder. Pinging or knocking will reduce the efficiency of your engine and, over a very long period of time, it can cause damage.

They put KNOCK SENSORS in cars to guard against improperly fueled vehicles (timing will change if knock detected). Check your operating manual.
