Gear shift knob removal

I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the gear shift knob on my '02 Mazda truck (Ford Ranger).

Any suggestions?

Hopefully you can remove the driven pulley on top of the transmission and access the cover (ref 18.) for the detent ball (ref 3) and spring. Sometimes they get rusted up and can be taken out cleaned and lubed. You first want to be sure that the belt stops when the clutch is depressed. If a will fit belt was installed, that could be an issue.

If it's like my 6hp Horse, there is a slotted nut with a roll pin driven through it, right where the hi/lo lever pivots. remove the pin and tighten the nut to the next notch and try it there.

Where was the the blue smoke coming from? the engine, under the deck, or the rearend? The transmission (rearend) is probably a splicer. The one I got is a sealed unit. so servicing not going to be easy plus if it leaked out you will have the leak to deal with also. I would download a manual from sears to find out what oil (or grease)goes in the the transmission. usually tht model of transmission is gears connected with a chain inside the two half housing. The drive belt from the engine to the transmission can or starts to slip, smoke, streching, and causing clutch release problems which will in turn cause shifting dificulity cause the pulling connected to the rear end is still turning. I would make sure the drive belt has good tension and not burnt up with the clutch released before I would attempt to regrease the transmission, plus it the transmission leaked all the grease out there should be evidents of this under the rearend???

Remove the deck so you have a good unobstructed view of the ground drive belt system. Have a helper sit in the seat and push down on the clutch/brake pedal while you examine all the linkages in the mechanism from below the frame. You are looking for worn or loose pivots, pins or anything that can limit the travel of the components that put enough slack in the ground drive belt for the transmission input pulley and shaft to become "unpowered" so you can shift. Have you also noticed the clutch engaging at a lower pedal position when you try to get moving from a stop? That can also be a symptom of the same issue. If you have recently changed the belt and did not use an OEM spec belt there is a chance the belt is a fraction too short. Basically, something is causing a bit of power to be applied to the belt when the clutch is pushed down. Here is a link that might be useful: 917.272751 OM

The gear shifter (Manual transmission) is held in place by a special bolt with a wedge designed in the middle and threads at both ends. You simply lift the rubber boot from the floor exposing the top of the transmission where the shifter stub enters the cab, and you will see the bolt going through with the nut on the passengers side of the shift lever.

Take the nut off, and put it on the other side and tighten it and it will pull the wedge out of engagement and release the shift lever.

Now if your talking about the knob at the top of the shifter, be advised you will ruin it by pulling it off.
They are a very tight fit, and once you manage to get it off of the shifter it will never again fit properlly and the only way you wont be dealing with it coming loose in your hand will be to replace it. It's easiest to remove a good knob by first removing the shift lever from the truck as described above.
