I laughed so hard reading this my husband woke-up in the other room and thought I went crasy(I don't laugh much) When I first started reading I thought well this must be someone who doesn't have to get up and out and gone by 6am. I don't, not because I'm a work at home or retired,but I work seasonaly.But still sorry to say I love to shovel snow.My husband says when I shovel I'm a loly-gager.I don't push my self to huffing and puffing but I do get over heated.I'II even go out at midnight if its piling-up and shovel.It's amazing at night.When I look out at 5pm and see the rest of the neibours coming home and can't get into their drive ways I smile.But I do remind my husband how good he has it.Our driveway is 400 ft and has four parking spots and a turn -around. Plus I shovel a path to the garbage can,the propane tank and a path to the barn. I make sure the out door plug-in cord is visable and easy for him to get at too.I don't want a hero cookie.But I bet the guys down the street wish I belonged to them ,at least during the winter. I have friends here in Northern Canada that have Honda Accords and they have no problems at all, and they just use All Season tires! And we get a pile of snow! Parents have an AWD Toyota Venza that is great as well. Not too be rude or anything, many times its the driver and not the car! I know some cars that are extra wide can be a bit troublesome as the "tracks" in the snow are a bit narrower, but that shouldn't be a problem for the Accord. You stated your husband has a SUV, how does he like it? I love the Venza, as I stated my parents have 1---they liked it so much, my inlaws bought 1 as well--but they reside in Florida, so snow is not an issue,lol

I'm not much of a fan of "all-season" tires (the demands on them are so broad they're really not much good at anything), but I'll agree that four all-season tires will be more predictable and, in their own way, safer than putting on just two snow tires. The best thing to do, though, is to buy four snow tires, mount them on their own rims (steel is fine and will look better after a while than alloy wheels), and switch every winter and spring. This also has the added benefits of letting you use true "summer" tires for the best performance (if that kind of thing matters to you) and extends the life of your tires because you're not using some of them for several months at a time. FWIW, my snows are on by around Halloween and they come off sometime before Memorial Day. Around here, ice is a possibility at any time in between.

1. Original tires usually are not the best for snow. You could get additional traction by switching to snow tires, but the best grippers are noisier than touring tires. The next step down is all season tires. There are tires that offer more grip that are not too noisy - see Consumer Reports for noise ratings. Better traction tires will aid both accelerating from a stop and stopping. 2. Look at a Subaru with AWD (all wheel drive). I suggest the Forester model. This is what parents are buying in Wisconsin for their new teen age drivers. There are other versions of 4 wheel drives. A Jeep with part time and full time 4 wheel drive with snow tires is one of the best, but you do have to be savvy about how and when to use the various modes of this drive. However, maintence may be more costly than your present vehicle and the ride is more harsh for older Jeeps. A note of caution: A good 4 wheel drive can lull the unspecting driver into trouble. Its stopping power does not (seemingly) match its acceleration. It goes good, but stopping is no better than any other 2 wheel drive vehicle with the same tires.
