2001 Jaguar S Type AC/Heating Problem

I have the same problem with my AC and my heater. This summer my Ac would be blowing warm air when I was at idle or driving under 35-40mph. Then when I would accelerate above 35-45 it would blow ice cold. And just recently I found out it is doing the same thing when I turn on the heater. At idle it blows cold air but when driving over 35-40mph it will blow HOT air. Adjusting the electronic temperature gauge makes no difference until I reach 35-45mph. this is making me crazy. Can anyone please give me some insight on what could be wrong, and what I can do to fix this problem? Please HelpÂ

sounds like a problem with a vacum controlled door on the heat/ac system.

For a number of years the others that post here regularly have seen me predicting just how difiicult servicing certain cars was becoming. Congratulations on owning one of the worst when it comes to having good service information for it, as well as being even able to take this to an average shop because they are not likely to have a scan tool with software that supports the climate control system in this car.

First are there any codes being set by the climate control head? I don't have the information at home on how to retrieve the codes manually, or if that is even possible. Another thing to consider, there is nothing here that truly suggests the car "is doing the same thing". Simply because of how heater, and AC systems operate, one using hot engine coolant, and the other a refrigerant system to cause an effect in the air temperature. Now granted they do share certain components in the dash, especially mode doors which are electrically operated, computer controlled with feedback signals to the control head. Plus in order for the climate control system to change the door positions in the in car, it has to know the ambient temperature (outside), the in car temperature, and the desired temperature by the operator. There are sensors called thermisters on the left side of the evaporator case that report this information to the control head.

Do you really want to know how complicated this gets? The system has a water control valve, that either allows coolant to flow through the heater core, or blocks it depending on the commands from the control head. In 2000 they had issues with the valve plugging up, so they added a filter screen. The 6-clys do not use an auxillary coolant pump, but the V-8's do. Is the coolant level correct? Is the thermostat opening too soon? All of these could be impacting the heat the system delivers to the interior, and have nothing at all to do with the way your AC was working.

I have never had one of these in the shop, and cannot say for sure if I have the software to support the climate control system. The 2000's used the same system as did the Lincoln Continentals. 2001, I don't know. I'd be hesitant to take this in if the shop was busy because it can turn into a technician trap. Which means the shop could lose money and time dealing with this as it could be the one and only time they see one of these. I suggest you use a shop that regularly works on these, or the dealer.

Placing the PEX for radiant heating is relatively easy. What's not so easy is determining if this is a waste of money for you. It was for us. 1.)We live in the South, where the cooling season is longer than the heating season. Very little chance of payback unless you operate the system for longer periods. The smart boilers needed to accurately control a system in a temperate climate are pretty spendy and complicated and not very DIYable. 2.)We have wide temperature swings, sometimes daily, which magnifies the slowness of the "thermal mass pendulum." We see this just with our heated bathroom floors (separate system). It's going to be 42Â° tonight, so turning on the heated floors will feel good. You have to think about that a couple of hours in advance, because it takes that long to warm up. By the time they're warm, they're too warm for most of the timeframe except for that brief period that was 42Â°. The next day when the swing is back up to 60Â° and the floors are still 80Â°, the bathroom is too hot and needs a window opened for comfort. 3.) We insulated the new addition so well that a plain 110 volt 1500 w spaceheater can keep it 60Â° in the winter, and a 2 ton AC in the summer. If we'd put the money we spent on PEX towards additional insulation (we just used 2x6 construction with "standard" type insulation instead of the new high tech products) then the simple addition of the forced air furnace would have been more than sufficient for truly comfortable heating in the winter. For many people who have a long heating season and awkward spaces that forced air isn't comfortable for, radiant heating can work "miracles". For people in warmer climates, or in climates with great daily temperature fluctuations, a radiant system is very often not the best choice for either comfort or the pocketbook. Do your research well, and don't get caught up in the hype thinking it's a "must have". It isn't. And, it's sometimes even a drawback to comfort. We've never fired up the radiant in the addition. We've never needed to, even in 0Â° weather. And the bathrooms do work wonderfully well (imagine 6 cats lying on their backs in bliss!) but are also inefficient monetarily and for true comfort when confronted with wide temperature swings in a day. They are great when the temps say in the 40's and below for extended periods of time, but that't not how our winters here operate. It's 40 for a couple of days, then back up to 55Â°, then down to the high 20's, then 70Â° (must be Christmas day!) and then you have a 50Â° drop into the teens and on down to 0Â°. Radiant isn't very efficient or comfortable with weather like that.

A different tech/company. I asked about shooting some dye through and he said -not this time. Found out why he said that because as he was leaving and I asked how much I owed him he said "nothing" it's warranty wrk. He thought his company had done the installation. Being the honest person that I am (LOL)-I told him your company had not-so I paid $209.00. I think if he knew I was a new customer he may have done the dye check-he seeme to feel bad about it. How long do you think the charge will last-Ifigure it took 2 years to leak that much (unless it was a recently developed leak) so hopefully I'll get another 2 years. I should have kept the 15 year old TRANE-It was still working-but-you never know! Tedrik

Clean it up and if that works you've saved some money and if it don't--call your AC man. All you've lost is some time and soap. MR HAVAC believes you should call in a plumber to flush the toilet when your finished. Bob Brown is his personal kicking boy and must have not said anything lately and Mr HAVAC was getting shakey and needed someone to unload on and you were it. By the way, MR.HAVAC does give great advice, some of the best on this forum, but save your being sorry for when he really-- really lites into you.

First, I would try replacing your filter of the high MERV type with a standard, cheap (throw away) type. See if that solves your problem. This you can do yourself. Sometimes, those filters are too restrictive and can decrease the airflow across your evaporator coil such that the thing ices up. Second, (and you may want to consult a professional on this--definitely, absolutely cut the power to the unit first!) is to check your blower compartment and see if it is extremely dirty (or if the evaporator coil is extremely dirty). These factors can prevent adequate airflow across your evaporator coil thus increasing the likelihood that it ices up. Another good thing to check is to see if your OUTDOOR coil on your condensing unit is clean. If the thing is plugged with leaves, hair, dirt, dead grass, etc...this isn't good either. Third, you want to have a professional check your refrigerant charge on your unit. If all other factors are eliminated, an icing coil typically means low refrigerant charge. If the refrigerant charge is correct, then the thing to do as a "try" would be to have the technician (or yourself if you are so qualified) to increase your blower speed. This will decrease the likelihood that your coil ices up. Another possibility could be (unlikely) a stuck TXV valve or plugged metering orifice or a pinched lineset. Please (by all means) consult a professional if you do not feel qualified or able to do these things. A service call is only 100 bucks to check it out.

john_g thanks for the info, you hit the nail on the head when you said this car is one of the worst when it comes to having good service information. I canÂt find ANY good web sites to do with Jaguar help. I took it in to my local mechanic and he had it for about a week didnÂt find any leaks recharged the refrigerant and told me he has no clue what is going on. I spent allot of money on this car to have nothing but problems. Money is a little tight so taking it to the dealership is my last option. I just have this weird feeling that itÂs something so stupid and easy to fix. Well again thanks for your time and the info if you come across any thing else let me know.
