Jaguar Engine Won't Shut Off!

My neighbor has a 2000 Jaguar S-Type. The engine won't shut off. When he turns the key, car keeps running. There's a warning on the dashboard about "engine failsafe mode." He had some odd trouble over past months with the battery going dead, then TWO replacements also being bad (both confirmed and replaced by AutoZone). Apparently there's some other electrical problem happening, whether related to the previous battery issue or not.

The immediate problem is how to shut off the engine, which is running at this moment, car parked in his driveway. I believe he tried disconnecting a battery cable, no effect. Is there a fuse could be pulled? Surely it doesn't have to keep running until the gas tank is dry? He said there are three fuse boxes. Any suggestions welcome ASAP!!

Crisis over. He found the right fuse now to kill the engine.

If his normal means of having diagnostics and repairs performed includes AZ, the crisis is far from over. JMHO.

Thanks for the response. It's definitely a Briggs engine. Or let me put it this way, there's a big 'ol Briggs and Stratton stamp on it. The model # is 31G77. I believe that's right. Good point. Getting a voltage reading is not a true indicator of whether or not the battery is good. It wasn't smoking, only when it conked out. It was laboring, laboring, laboring, then it conked out and threw out a puff of smoke. The reason why I'm GUESSING the engine is a little sieged is because when I turn the key, it appears I have good power going toward the cranking process (you can hear and feel that jolt of energy), yet the engine "stops" it. It's almost as though there's a heavy break on the engine. When I try and spin the engine from the top by hand, it won't budge. Then again, I have no idea if you normally can spin it by hand because I've never tried to do that! Sorry for being such a newbie. From the little research that I've seen taking the spark plug out and putting penetrating oil down it, waiting an hour then trying to manually move the pistons by hand as a *possible* solution. Again, this is assuming I'm right and the engine's seized.

917.289031 is the model number. Like I said in the original post, the engine is not the original but a replacement...just so you know. I just took the spark plug out and cranked it and that allowed the starter to spin the flywheel constantly. Exciting! What do you suggest?

"Even with the coil not connected to anything oI get 0 ohms between the small lug on the coil and the ground post on the engine" If I understand you correctly, this is the "Kill Wire", there should be no resistance. The engine will only run if this terminal is not grounded. Grounding it will kill the engine. Wire should run directly from it to the terminal on the switch which has continuity when the switch is turned OFF. Never mind the safety switches, they are on a different circuit. Walt Conner

AZ is not the "normal." I'm aware that the car has been to Jaguar service several times. The dealer, however, is 1.5 hours away, one-way, so a routine battery replacement is reasonably obtained locally.

When the battery issue continued after the first replacement swap, I advised having the car checked for electrical problems ... but per what I was told, the last swap with AZ, the battery ~6 months old, was leaking acid, wouldn't take/hold a charge. Perhaps an electrical problem causing the battery to overheat? The car isn't driven much, he has a company truck. It may stay idle for 5 to 6 days at a stretch.

Just bought a 2009 Jaguar XJ8. 47,900 miles. Dealer would not allow any warranty,

sold "as is". Anyway, after three days i experienced this problem of the engine not shutting off. There was clear indication that the engine was getting hot. Was told by mechanic(Jaguar) that there is no problem with the engine. the problem was being caused by a fuse/sensor.??????? Drove home from repair, same day, engine keeps going after i turn off the engine. however the dash monitor was not indicating that the engine was hot. Still concerned as to what is really going on.

The car will have to go to a qualified tech that is capable of diagnosing the problem and fix accordingly. The problem the way it is could turn into a dangerous situation.

Yes! That is my main concern. Should have done some homework before making the decision to buy. Just reading the history of this problem heightens my concern. Jaguar has had this problem for some time now. So many have tried different fixes. One week out of the dealership and I have spent over a thousand dollars. Drove home from repair shop (Jaguar) specialist, and the engine still would not shut down. The only difference is that the "Hot engine" light did not come on. Afraid to make a trip of distance. "Let The Buyer beware.". Traded in a perfectly good Jaguar S-Type.
