Pickup Bed Storage Box

We have a 2005 Ford Ranger with a 6 foot bed and a standard cab. There is not much room for behind the seat storage...acutally nearly none. We would like a secure/weather tight storage box to be placed in the rear bed.

We have looked at Weatherguard, Delta and others but can not find one that quite meets our needs. Would like a chest style that is no more than 17 inches tall, 47 inches long and 18 inches from front to back. Steel, alum or black...does not matter.

Would like to hear from others what has worked for them or not worked...and if they like what they have where did they get it from. A good price is always nice...

I got an 8ft bed and if I had a tool box I could hold anything without laying down the tailgate and tying it down. Now I dont own any tool box and suffer becuase of it also when I need to the dry storage. If I could afford it I would get something called "side boxes" that go over the wheel well saving you precious bed space esp. w/ a 6ft your going to be hurting to haul anything more than a box or groceries.

GoodOleBoy...I agree with you. Luckily we are not using the little Ranger for hauling a bunch of stuff. We have an Exolorer with a V8 for towing whatever and use a utility trailer for lumber, trash, gravel, beauty bark and the such. My commuter car is an 83 Civic. The Ranger is for our daughter (who is away at college). She is studying veterinary medicine with an emphasis on large animals so the Ranger is something she can use if she needs hay, grain or who-knows-what. Thus, having a spacious bed is not #1. Ruled out tonneau covers (hard or soft) and caps. Either too limiting on the size of what can go into the bed or too cumbersome in trying to load something heavy or large.

Since I am spending the money for college and the Ranger I am trying to keep some costs down and this is why I did not get her an F350 diesel with four-doors (would be nice). I have the honor of driving the Ranger around for awhile for a break-in period to work out any kinks before our daughter takes it back to college with her.

So not looking for anything fancy, but something strong, weather tight and not a cheap paperthin thing. Hoping that another set of eyes out there are seen something I might of missed.

I think you are misunderstanding the concept of thermal mass as it relates to home heating. Just plopping something big in the living room isn't going to do much. What you need is a large mass and a way to passively heat that mass with energy that wouldn't normally be in the room. You don't gain any energy just by using your existing heat to warm up a big tank of water.

Glad you posted your experience with the platform bed and condensation, Jason..... I do not have the stratton bed, I have a queen storage bed from ROOM AND BOARD. I have a foam mattress from them too, but not a Tempurpedic. My bed has wooden slats above the drawers, beneath the mattress. I will check to see if there is condensation, but I think it is fairly well ventilated. I can tell you from experience sleeping on boat mattresses, that it is not just a problem with the Stratton, that all mattresses sitting on solid surfaces and with cooler spaces beneath them, they will get wet. During my years working on boats, I found total wet mattresses many times, and sunning them on deck was only a temporary relief. If you have actual MOLD in your mattress, I'd say it would be a good idea to get rid of it. Getting rid of mold is tough. Did the solid sheet of plywood ship with the Stratton bed? I'm surprised it has no holes drilled in it, or that it did not ship with slats. Very interesting question you've asked there too. I was thinking about putting a solid sheet of material beneath my mattress, but had hesitated due to my previous experience on boat bunk beds. So now I know it can happen even on land in a house. I'm wondering if a hemmed piece of carpet or the bread delivery tray stuff would give it some room to aspirate? As expensive as a Tempurpedic is, I'd hate to throw it out, but if it creates a health problem, what are the options?

Well, we made a little progress today. SO agrees that he wants the bedroom to look restful and uncluttered. Now if we can just purge enough!! Edited to add that it looks like I have a lot of online options. Waiting til SO gets a few more things unpacked and gets over his travel and moving tiredness to make a final decision. Thanks for the help! Will report back when I do a reveal of the whole bedroom makeover. It's ongoing. The house is going through quite a few decorating changes/challenges now that SO is here. But we are so happy to finally be able to live together again!

Why not just put them back onto the beds after washing? Or, fold them and put them on the bed under the comforter/spread/coverlet/dust sheet/whatever, and toss in the dryer for a few minutes when you are expecting guests. Keep a set on hand somewhere when you NEED to put on a fresh set right away. Maybe in an underbed box with a dryer sheet, under that guest bed, but you might want to toss them in the dryer for 15 minutes to fluff them up. Holiday-themed bedding: don't.

Sears and a few farm stores in the area also truck specialty shops also sell what you are looking for.
You may want to try finding a ford ranger forum ont he net and ask there.I know on the chevy site I visit lots of people recomend brands of boxes etc..

Found a Ford website and it has been pretty good for information...they endorse the Weatherguard boxes, though they are a bit pricy. Just wanted to cover all my bases, might end up with the Weatherguard but wanted to make sure I was not missing something else. Thanks

Greenlee and knaack make boxes that fit inside the bed. Have seen them at home depot.

Thanks you all. I have ordered a Weatherguard box from a guy I know that gave me a little discount. After all the research that I have done, little is an understatement, I have learned that the Weatherguard is the best in this situation. Time will actually tell after it is installed and have used it for awhile.
