buying a car whilst on holiday and insuring it

hi all, we are from the uk but own some land in arkansas and are intending to build a house there. We are coming over to sort things out and have a 3 month holiday at the same time. We looked into the cost of hiring a car for three months and came to the conclusion that it would be as cheap to buy a car when we get there and insure it and then pay for it to be garaged up till next time we come. Does anyone know if this would be possible? I dont know how the process of buying a car works in usa. Do you have to have an address to registrer the car to? Would any insurance companies insure someone on a car if they were not us citizens? Obviously they insure you on holiday rental cars but i was wondering if anyone could talk me through the car buying and owning process? Thanks all in advance

Hello, I'm surprised you haven't gotten more responses to your thread. Perhaps its because yours is a rather unusual request, however if I were doing the same thing in England I guess I would have the same type questions. As to registering the car, yes you will need an address, in this case where ever you are going to live in Ark. When you get here, contact your state motor vehicle dept. for forms and exactly what you need to do. Also ask if your UK drivers license is ok to use here. The phone no. can be found in your local phone book. As to buying it, decide on what you want and then shop around till you get the best price. Vistech had good advice about insurance though any insurance company would be able to help in that area. Again call some local insurance agents for advice and be sure to shop for prices. To get more responses, ask what kind of car to buy, you'll probably get more responses than you really want. Good luck, have a plesant stay and don't forget to drive on the right side of the road. Yes because, nothing shows signs of maturity like, "because I want to, and I can!" It doesn't matter how much your furs cost, it only matters that in your mind they are not worth insuring. Insurance on furs is fairly reasonable, and yet in your mind they are not worth paying insurance on. The only reasonable and non-childish assumptions are, you are either broke and shouldn't have your furs, you are a poor decision maker, or you don't consider them valuable enough to insure. I didn't want to call you poor or stupid. "I keep my furs with me all the time", that means when I go out in fur, I don't leave the coat in the coat room..." - NO IT DOESN'T...I am not sure if words are an invitation to read your mind on your homeworld, but here on earth words have meanings. Often words have multiple meanings, we try to add clarity by surrounding them with other words. However, sometimes when we string words together they really don't mean what they say. Sarcasm and wit are examples of when meaning is different than what the words alone mean. For example, when someone says that you drive around with your furs in the trunk, or any other part of the car, he may not mean it literally...

I've used a wheelchair consistently in the past (when severe chronic pain was not adequately treated - ok, not at all - and we did not have a car so were reliant on public transit) and from time to time I still rent one when going somewhere where normally one would be doing a lot of standing and walking and there is expected to be a shortage of places to sit (like the home shows they have in local arenas), and I have to say that I found/find it a H*LL of a lot easier to be a "socially acceptable disabled person" when on my own wheels (as opposed to a store-provided scooter or wheelchair) - people can SEE the disability (the wheelchair), therefore it exists to them. I use a cane about 2/3 of the time right now, my PT and paindoc want me to use it only when I really must because it can cause compensation strains/injuries even when properly fitted and used, and I see a very distinct difference in how people behave toward me WRT things like handicapped parking when I have my cane than when I don't, although there are still those twerps (usually elderly) who are clueless enough to insist that I can't possibly need either my parking tag or my kick-@$$ purple paisley cane :-) because I'm "too young". *eyeroll* I suppose I should be glad I don't look how I feel because young children would run away screaming, people would be keeling over with heart attacks, I would leave a swath of destruction behind me everywhere I went! LOL I did get a hand-me-down wheelchair off Freecycle so that I wouldn't have to rent one for the aforementioned uses but the clunker was so heavy I couldn't maneuver it even on a smooth, flat surface so I re-Freecyled it. :-( I have the police parking-enforcement office phone number on my cell phone, and I WILL call in cars parked in the handicapped spaces that don't have plates/tags. I do check the dashboard and seat (if I can, I'm not clambering up on some bloody Hummer) to see if someone just tossed their hang-tag onto the dash or left it on the seat instead of hanging it properly on the mirror. Where I live it's a minimum $250 and in some towns $500 (!) fine to park in a handicapped space without authorization. I goofed once, left my hang-tag in DH's car, parked in my usual space at the drugstore without even realizing my tag wasn't where it belonged and got a ticket, but I took it and my tag and my driver's license (which has a symbol on it showing that I'm an authorized tag owner) to the police station and they cancelled it right then and there. (Mari, typing from bed... went to Yule party half an hour's drive away today and too ouchy to sleep but too tired to sit up, and next weekend I'm going to do it again! Oy!)

Sorry that you've had this hassle to cope with, apart from the expense. Around here, we have no fault insurance. When I was in an accident and not judged at fault, my insurance paid for the write-off of my old car ('93 Ford Taurus). Paid me about what I'd bought it for, about 6 mos. previously. When I (evidently) ran the red light, as I was found to be at fault and ticketed, there was no compensation ... I had to suffer the loss of my car. Actually, I fixed it, at larger cost than it had cost me to buy it, about 6 mos. earlier, as it appeared, at about 120,000 mi., to have potentially quite a few good miles left in it and it seemed a waste to scrap it, though it was close to 20 years old. It costs a great deal of precious energy, plus adds to not only pollution but to global warming as well to build a new car for me (or the portion of its life that I'd use in an older model). Even if she had insurance, if she had no driver's licence, they likely would not have covered, in any event. The owner of the car had responsibility to ensure that only licensed drivers drove it - apart from it being stolen. When my friend the milk man wanted to go on holiday, with his son to drive the route, son had to upgrade driver's licence from, supposedly, permission to drive truck to one with air brakes. There was ice in the home when I visited, as it appeared that the son had only licence to drive a car, the Dad had given him the devil, the Mom was angry at Dad for hurting her son's feelings ... and found it hard to get her head around the fact that every time the son drove that truck out the lane unaccompanied by a properly licensed driver, he put at risk everything that they owned ... as the insurance company would not have covered any trouble. Actually ... I upgraded my truck licence to coverage for air brake and rode around sitting beside the son as he did the driving, or I drove the truck myself. ole joyful

That's not what is happening with Ashley's DH (from what I can tell) or my DH though. So why are you harping on that? My DH did make a choice not to pursue his rights. He is not going to FORCE his DD to spend time with him. Do you think it would be more healthy for DD to be told by her mother "you could be doing __________ but instead your dad doesn't care about what you want to do, he's going to make you ___________ instead". Do you think that would make their relationship better? Should Ashley's DH continue to drive and spend $400 a pop for 1.5 hours of face time? Should my DH go to court, get the visitation enforced and MAKE SD spend half time here? Their order is 50/50.... this is her homestate. Should SD be forced to quit her school and attend a school in her CS state? See, FD, I think what you don't comprehend is that you have been relatively "in charge" of your DD and have no understanding of any other way. My father NEVER told me anything bad about my mother when I was growing up. I DID think he didn't want me. But looking back I can see that so much conflict was because of BM. My dad just told me the other day that when he had me, my mom "forced" him to take my stepsister too, and that we fought all the time. So, if he didn't want to take her too, my mom would tell me "you can go to dads, or we're going to __________" and of course I would tell dad that I'd see him another time. Because a lot of my childhood when I went to dad's house, mom and family did the MOST FUN THINGS EVER. Like travel to a super fun location. Or do an activity with girl scouts that I couldn't make up, so everyone would have the badge but me. PO1, of COURSE NCP's can do alienation. ANYONE can. That's why DH tries really hard not to say anything to SD that could be construed as negative about her mom. It has nothing to do with not upsetting BM and everything to do with trying to make SD have a good childhood. My DH is trying his hardest. You may have another way of doing things. I may have another way of doing things. It doesn't mean any of them are right or wrong. Do you think the kid would suffer more or less if their parents were in an ugly custody battle? Do you think the CP would be more or less inclined to dump their BS on a kid? Do you think the kid would be more willing to see NCP if they were FORCED and they knew it was enforced, or if they choose to do it on their own? Just in general, kids prefer their mothers when they are young. They want to defend their mothers. They feel safer with their mothers. I don't think any of us know what it's like to be a father.

thanks for your replys, i emailed Geico and yes, they said i would need an arkansas driving liscence which i guess may be a pain to obtain as we are not looking to live there permanantly and would only be on holiday visas. I think il just wait till we arrive and ask at some local insurance brokers office.

Whatever happened to an international driver's license? Didn't they have such a thing years ago? Or was I just dreaming ...

never heared of an international driving license, have no problem actualy driving on US roads as far as my license goes its just the owning a car as a foreign citizen and insuring it that is causing me problems. Last time i hired a car it was over $1000 for 2 weeks, well im going to be in USA for 3 months so for the price of the rental i thought why not buy a car? If only it was so easy!!

can you buy the car as an out of country owner and insure it as a resident of your country, and pay for the insurance based on where it will be driven? can you buy it and give it to whoever you are visiting in AK, and have them insure it and put you on as a driver? do you know anywone here in the states you could do this for? they would own the car, and you would drive it until youleave. then they could sell it, or give it to them? just a few bouncing balls to contemplate. ask away.

Where in AR, I have relatives in Poinsett county near Memphis and in Helena AR that may be able to help.

Why AR? Do you really know how REDNECK, racist, and bible belt, hardshell Baptist, attitude that is. Horribly HOT and HUMID in the summer.

Weather is tolerable in the Northwest AR area, but....

I believe the "international driver's license" is for diplomats and those with special visas/passports.
Ask about this in England...
Arkansas, unless it is really backward, should be willing to give, say, 90 days for a "foreigner" to obtain a license...
I had no idea it was so expensive to "hire" an automobile - ask around to secure a better rate - if possible..

Bill and Hillary C. are from Arkansas, so not all the people are that bad, are they ??

Bill is from AR, Hillary is from Chicago.

As I grew up in AR "republican" was a bad word, a very bad word. The term "yellow dog democrat" came from the south and basically meant any dog could get elected if he was a democrat.

Then along came the civil rights moment and the religious right republicans quickly developed code words that meant "states rights".
