I'm new here but just wanted to give my input. I know you are probably not wanting to spend a lot of money to totally "fumigate" the room by painting, stripping this and that, etc. So here is another easy alternative. It's not 100% fool proof by any means, but at least it is realistic. As long as you keep the room smoke free, plus keep the items you're selling/craft supplies, packing supplies, etc. in a confined area in the room (such as an armoir, cabinet, drawer, etc.), AND as long as the items you are selling aren't cloth, mesh, or other materials that smoke smells cling to the worst, you should do fine. You can get an ionizer, as suggested. Keep the room totally smoke free and clean furniture, etc. often, and also, for good measure, get a can of air freshener designed to eliminate odors to spray a few times a day. Keep the room closed off away from where your spouse smokes. When it cools off, keep windows open when possible during the day. As long as you keep your items and packing materials in this room in a closed space or cabinet in the room, clean and deodorize room often, get an ionizer and, again, as long as they are not cloth items, you should do just fine. Yes, there are some people who are extremely sensitive to smoke but it's a small risk if you take the easy-to-do measures listed. Now, if you were selling clothes or purses/bags, it'd be a totally different story and I wouldn't do that. But for crafts or other non-cloth items, I say go for it. I'm sure you would do well selling your crafts on Ebay. Good luck!

I have used Febreeze on stinky books, and also baking soda. Both take time. With the Febreeze, I fanned the pages of the book and lightly misted them with Febreeze (it has to be a very light mist or the pages will warp), then stood the book on end for several days to dry. I had to repeat this twice before the smell was gone. Not recommended on coated paper, e.g. photo pages. With the baking soda, you put the book in a box with an open container of soda, leaving the book standing open with fanned pages. It can take several weeks, but is probably safer for the book in the long run than using Febreeze. I have had cat litter (has to contain baking soda) recommended as well, but haven't tried it. The method is the same as the baking soda one, but is supposed to work faster.

I know this is an old post but since there is a current question about this, thought I'd share what worked for me. I had a healthcare worker that was helping with my Dad who I hired and didn't know she smoked. She was great except for that but she reeked so badly I could not even stand next to her. My DH found a larger version of an Orek air purifier we'd used before and we put it right by the chair she sat in and there was no more smoke odor!! Problem solved! (Worked even faster than the smaller one we had used before to get rid of paint VOCs) It was amazing. Room smelled of fresh outdoor air and was wonderful. Then I used the same Orek later on to clear cigarette smoke and moth ball smell from several expensive leather purses that I'd gotten a good deal on in eBay. It took about 2-3 days to get rid of both smells, and I thought I'd leave it a few more and I was pleasantly surprised to even have the smell of leather retur! Had I not known what to do, I would have had to trash them. And just recently, helped my sister with very strong VOC odor from a huge brand new cat tree that was about 6-7 feet tall. It was particle board and sisal and her cat was starting to get sick and was giving them headaches. It was in a room by itself and it had improved in a day and was totally cleared by day three or four. She was so impressed. So I've never done multiple large pieces of furniture, but it it can clean the smells from several rooms of the VOCs from new paint smells, cat trees, purses and chairs, it would probably do great with yours. I would leave it several days to a week but you should smell improvement in 1-2 days I would think. Oh, and I always put the side that pulls air in, towards the item to clean and not the side blowing out. The brand is Orek and no I don't work for them or anything. Just pleased with a product that worked on this difficult problem and sharing it. The larger one we got that worked so well for us is called Orek DualMax and it even has a small remote. If you try it, hope it works for you as well as it has for us, our family and friends.

I know people who have put pans of vinegar on the registers if they are in the floor so it slowly evaporates. I don't care about the smell of vinegar but it does work to neutralize the odors. One other and faster option is called Ozium. Wal-mart and some auto parts stores carry it. The original scent is the only one that works well with bad odors so don't bother with any other scents. I will warn you it is overpowering but dies down to a clean tolerable scent. Turn the heat/air off and FAN on and spray in the air return and give the filter a good spritzing. The rest I would spray the carpet lightly and spray the walls around the windows especially if the previous owners had drapes which are magnets for smoke and hold it close so it permeates the walls. I would do a combination ozium and vinegar attack. Eventually you will win the war. I used to work at a dealership years ago that used a small bottle of ozium on smokers trade ins and sprayed under the seat, the headliner under the visors and in the vents and after the can was all gone shut the car and leave it for 24 hours.
