Real Way To lower Gas Prices

What we need is a national conservation movement, emphasis should be put on carpooling, neighbors combining grocery shopping trips, use public transportation whenever possible. Check the air in vehicle tires once per week to insure proper inflation, drive slower speeds on the highway. Just our president advocating a conservation program like this would cause a drop in gas prices. So would an announcement that our government is going to fully fund all types of feasiable alternate energy research. There are several very promising systems out there, grant these programs the same funding aa NASA and the high gas prices would dissapear very quickly/ However, as long as nothing is done the oil cartel will continue to pork us. They,ll use every excuse under the sun to raise prices. Some fanatic in Iraq blows a local pipeline that gets fixed two hours later, this is used as a reason to hike our gas prices a few cents . Some company shuts a refinery down for rountine maintance and prices jump a dime. Many of the media hacks seem to have a full time job explaining why gas prices are going to rise. They mention an oil related incident 4 hours later prices jump.

We need a president and political party that genuinely care about the people and conservation..
Bush and the Republicans care about those who bought them the election and support them now.... And it will continue this way until the people take to the streets....

I suspect we are approaching the last decade of heavy petroleum use, that now, today (actually years ago), is the time to switch to bio-Diesel, coal, and nuclear..

4 hrs for the gas prices to go up?? well iam going to have look into this, and see if we can get that down to 1/2 hr or so.

Sorry first attempt mispelled SubZero model: I am looking at Wolf appliances: the Gas cooktop CT30G, the 30 inch downdraft unit, DD30I, and the E series Oven. This is coming in over my proposed appliance budget (in Canada this is just over $8000). I was thinking of looking at DirectBUY (http://directbuysca.com) but there have been questions about them on consumer shows. Does anyone here have experience buying from DirectBUY? Or other lower cost retailers? Does anybody know of a places in Canada where these appliances may be a little less costly? PS I would also buy a SubZero BI36U in a second at $3000. I almost fell ove r when I saw they were almost $10000. Have I been looking at "pay top price here" stores or are these typical Canadian pricing?

I am a Ph.D. chemist and I completely understand the origin of the black deposit. The black material is soot or from a chemical standpoint it is carbon. When you use the fireplace you will see a cool yellow flame rather than a blue flame from hot combustion of LP or propane. The cool yellow flames means that carbon monoxide is a product of the partial combustion of your gas source. Most of the time this carbon monoxide goes up the chimney. If the flames were blue in color that would mean that the flames were not only hot but a main product of combustion would be carbon dioxide. Getting back the carbon monoxide product with yellow burning gas, carbon monoxide will disproportionate to carbon (soot) and carbon dioxide. The chemical reaction is 2CO = C + CO2. This reaction is speeded up at lower temperatures particularly in contact with metals such as iron. The lower temperature explains why the carbon deposits occur on the logs in the front because they are lower in temperature. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide (CO) not only depends on temperature but on material. Certain glassy materials will completely inhibit the decomposition of carbon monoxide. One such material is quartz. Namely because of their chemical makeup, certain fireplace logs can inhibit suit formation and others will accelerate suit deposits. Staging and adding color to curb appeal would go a long way. It looks like you got the decluttering thing down, but maybe a little too much--some rooms are a little too spartan and thus not very welcoming. My first impression after looking at the photos was: -The kitchen was updated, but the color and style clash with the table and there are no stools at the island. These things tell me that I will need to repaint either the kitchen or the rest of the house right off the bat to make them flow better. The table (while it would be going with you & not staying) gives the wrong feel to the otherwise modern kitchen & the green tablecloth has to go. The absence of stools at the island make me wonder if there is not enough room for the stools and the table in that space. The chandelier & light fixture don't look like they were updated (the pots hanging from the ceiling draw your eye upward so you definitely notice the lights)--check out the big box stores for some affordable, easy to install updates. Love the window treatments and that wonderfully large window! -Living & Dining rooms both feel very spartan and cold in the photos. Pulling the curtains back will help bring in more natural light and make it feel more welcoming & open. Is the dining room table centered in the room or pushed off center toward the window? It seems cramped at the window end which to me says the room is small and family dinners will be elbow to elbow. As mentioned above, too many different paint colors--the yellow doesn't do much for me & the white or pale blue in the living room is very cold. Framed prints on the walls and an area rug would go a long way to warming the rooms up. -Bedrooms need warming up too--more framed prints & an area rug needed. Slide the bed in the master over so its more centered in the room. The way it is now, it appears cramped. It looks like there is a tray ceiling in there too--an off center bed is negatively accentuated in this situation. The green curtains need to go and be replaced with neutral colored ones and again, pull them back to let in natural light to give an open welcoming feel. -Masterbath needs some warm welcoming touches too. Framed prints, some candles, strategically drape a folded towel along the edge of the tub, add a pretty container of bath salts to the tub corner, add a pretty window treatment to the window above the tub vs. the plastic mini-blinds. Warm, fuzzy, yet tasteful bath rugs will help too. The walls need some color. Make it feel like a spa environment-somewhere potential buyers would like to retreat to after a long day at work. Don't forget a handtowel on the towel ring! -Love the family room--maybe an area rug...that's it. -J&J bath--looks good. Add a framed print or two, a window treatment, fuzzy warm yet tasteful bath rug & hang the hand towel up. Choosing a nice neutral color of towel throughout all the baths would help too. Something in a fluffy white or beige to give that spa like feel would be good. -Laundry looks great--open the curtains. -Nursery looks great--maybe a framed print or two. -Exterior: Deck needs new coat of paint. The front looks a little tired. Adding some spots of color will help the curb appeal--a tall fat planter with colorful flowers on both corners of the porch, some colorful flowers planted in the beds, maybe a couple tall plants under the porch lights. another planter or two with plants and flowers on the back deck would help make it seem more welcoming too. It seems like you were working on updating the house and managed to get to the kitchen, family room, laundry, nursery & J&J bath. The rest appears to have not been updated since the house was built. While I love antiques, the furniture in the unupdated rooms with this scenario does not help. The obvious brass fixtures in the master bath scream 1980s and most if not all potential buyers are wondering how hard will it be to update them. You definitely have 3 vastly different styles going on in the house which can cause a major disconnect with potential buyers. If you were to repaint the kitchen, dining room, bedrooms, master bath & living room to more neutral colors (similar to family room & J&J bath) + update brass fixtures + add warming touches as outlined above to rooms for staging + exterior color and I think you could probably relist for the $290K in the spring and walk away with around $260-$250K. My BIL is a real estate agent and when we sold our house with him he even said not to tell him the absolute lowest price we were willing to take for the house. I can confidently say that repainted & staged well (including replacing a couple light fixtures, new comforter for DS's room, new bathroom stuff, quick exterior spruceup by adding color) when we sold our house. We listed the house $10K higher than the exact house down the street that sold a couple weeks earlier for a higher than average price for our neighborhood. We had an offer in 2 days and ended up with a bidding war between two potential buyers that ended on day 5 on the market. Trust me, potential buyers need to be able to see themselves living in your home and driving up to your home everyday--your staging makes all the difference. Good luck to you!

Currently I have a very basic all-gas range that came with the home, but I have also used electric and duel-fuel. My preference for all gas is because gas energy costs run much lower than electric in our location. I realize the budget is low, but that is why I would also like info on higher-end ranges that may meet performance desires. Unfortunately, I've read plenty of reviews on commercial style ranges that seem to perform just as poorly in the baking department. Bottom line, I'd like to know what's the best gas option out there that someone has actually had experience with, rather than sifting through unspecific reviews. Thank you all for the speedy feedback!

No matter what we do $3.00 a gallon gas is here to stay.The cartels and big oil don't care about you,only lining their pockets.Anyone who thinks gas will go down to what it was priced at two years ago is only deluding themself.It might drop for a little while,then the Saudis will scratch their balls or something and the pump prices will rise back up within days!Can't depend on politicians to do anything as they are all inept bums!All you can do is get a fuel efficient vehicle and not drive quite as much.

I agree with Iggie. Just having the President announce a national program to encourage conservation would in itself cause prices to drop a little -- even before the first drop of fuel was conserved. Like the other commodities markets, the oil market is run by speculators. They buy and sell oil futures just like stocks and bonds. Markets like that are basically just big rumor mills. But the nice thing is, it works both ways. You get big price run-ups in those types of markets, and you also get sudden and drastic price collapses. Having the world's biggest oil user announce a conservation program could cause just such a collapse.

The current gas price spike hasn't even been driven by oil prices -- it's been driven by the wholesale price of gasoline. (There's a speculative market on that as well as crude oil.) Crude oil was still just a little under $70 a barrel Friday, right where it had been hovering since before Katrina. But due to fears that we might run into a shortage of gasoline due to refinery and pipeline outages, that price went up on its own even though oil didn't.

I don't know if $3 a gallon gas is here to stay or not, but if we'd put just a 10 cent a gallon tax on gasoline and funnel every dollar of it straight into research and development on alternative fuels, the price of gasoline would probably actually go down because of the tax, not up. The knowledge that we were getting serious about alternative fuels would probably cause the price of gasoline to drop more than the 10 cents that the tax would add. But the tax can't go anywhere but into alternative energy R and D. No more debacles like the "tobacco settlement" where a pile of money was ripped off ultimately from consumers and then handed over to states to do basically whatever they wanted with.

The thing that scares me about all this, though, is that there are a lot of smart people running things in Washington and elsewhere, and they know all this stuff. Anyone who takes a 10 minute serious look at the oil situation can figure out what we need to do to get things moving in the right direction. But my fear is that they don't want to do that because $70 a barrel oil is just far too lucrative for too many campaign contributors and high-level officials, and that's of both parties, not just the current one in the White House. I don't know if they want to put the cash cow on a diet.

Great post cowboyind! But I don't think even a 10 cent per gallon tax would ever be approved by the pols in DC. After all,their main concern is to get reelected and stay in power and raising taxes even a little bit is like kryptonite to them,especially the party in power.And the big oil lobby will fight any such initiative tooth and nail with the help of the prez and veep who are in their pockets!

The last two posts make some true and powerful statements.It amazes me that the American people allow their energy needs , in fact our way of life to be controlled by a bunch of speculators, political campaign contributors and lobbyists, however, they are. Not one word from a high official of either party about a national conservation effort, or funding for alternate energy source research. A botany professor built a pilot plant and demonstrated that gasoline could be easuly produced from milkweed sap. I read a report on this plant, it stated this plant has no disease, insects don,t like it and it can be grown on waste land. The botanist experimenting with this plant states that with selective breeding and genetic engineering aplant could be produced that would supply several times the amount of sap found in a wild milkweed plant. He believes with this approach and proper research, enough plants to supply 100% of of oil needs could be grown on the wasteland available in our western states. I don,t know if this true or just conjecture. However, it should thoroughly checked out and funded if anyshows any merit. The oil situation is only going to get worse in the future. The world supply is dwindling and demsand is growing. All I can say is if we Americans do not wake up and demand our governmk,ent start doing something to find a source of alternate energy, the present messe and the gas shortages of few years back will look like a Sunday school picnic
