coolant leak

I have a 1999 Chevy Blazer with a coolant leak. It's steadily dripping from the bottom of my truck even with the engine off. Can anyone tell me what is leaking or how exactly I find the leak?

Look.

While you are there, also examine the bottom side of the water pump housing. It has a weep hole. wWen the pump seal leaks, the fluid escapes out the weep hole.

Sure, I have a Snap-on cooling system tester. Come on over and we'll find it.

Like jemdandy said, look.

Water pump, hoses and clamps, freeze plugs, radiator, thermostat housing, etc. If it drips just sitting there, you don't even need my tester. Look where it's dripping, and follow the trail up to it's point of origin. If it's dripping up front, the water pump is a good place to start as jemdandy suggested.

outside of motor is dry now. am not sure coolant level is stable. only had 3 days to monitor it. son's car and he lives 150mi away. i had it this week to do the work. now he wants to take it back home with him this weekend. wife says to make a decision and replace intake gaskets to be sure. ya, like i really want to do that for fun. oil looks fine. the coolant is green. came that way when we bought it in april.

Assuming your radiator is more than 5 years old, it is replacement time. It makes no economic sense to put off this repair because an ultimate failure will strand you and create more cost than to have it repaired while you can yet drive it to the shop. An ultimate failure while driving at highway speed can damage the engine.

THANKS to ryanhughes for the quick response! Sounds like you are a proponent of the load calc - makes me feel better. The issue we have w/ duct sizing is that so little of it is accessible. Just finished a major remodel and I'm not up for tearing up walls, floors, etc. Too bad the unit d/n blow 6 months ago. I think the guy who made the comment about the high-eff. units not being good for our cut-up house was a veteran who assessed that we have a LOT of ductwork, and it will take a high fan speed to move enough air through all the ducts for us to feel it. He didn't do any calcs to back that up. That's prob. why the prev. owners installed the 5 ton "beast" as one rep called it. Pls. let me know if that still sounds like too much gut and not enough science. I don't have a lot of specific model #s, but I will get on that. One estimate proposed the Lennox G71 furnace that would qualify for the $1,500 rebate regardless what we do for AC, combined w/ a 14SEER Lennox AC. He said he would do a load test to right-size before we signed the contract. I'll provide more $$ once the last guys have bid. Thanks so much for your input!

Do they still sell that , I don't know what they call it, it is poured into the radiator, it has hidden particles in it that goes to the leak and stops it. They probably call it 'stop leak'. How about that.
Not to suggest a leak shouldn't be looked at...I too believe the water pump is the most logical place to start...but back when, radiators were always losing some coolant and the easiest way to stop it was with the ...you know!

It's called alumaseal and they still sell it. It works ok for very minor leaks through gaskets and seams. Doesn't have a chance of doing anything for a larger leak or one originating from the shaft or weep hole in the water pump.

I bought some stuff called "Blue Devil". It seals every kind of leak where coolent is concerned. It is kind of expensive, but it does work. Just follow the directions to the tee. Remember also, to remove the thermostat, before you use this.
I used it on my 92 Chevy Lumina which has 245,000 on it, and it worked great.
