mower deck belt coming off on cub cadet 1045
Comments (51)The left tension pulley on my LT 1045 Cub Cadet was about 1/2 inch to low and at an angle that took it out of a horizonal plane with the ajacent pullys. Took deck off and removed the bracket that holds both tension pullys. Put the defective pulley in a metal vise and hammered it so that its angle when reinstalled was parralell to the ajacent pullys. This solved the problem. I called Cub Cadet and spoke with the technical representative and he told me that the bracket I had to bend was bent out of shape because I, as many people do, engaged the electric pto to the blades while the deck was in level 3 to mow. He told me to put the deck in its highest position before engaging the pto to engage the blades. This alleviates the stress on the Kevlar belt that is trying to come up to 3600 rpm while in the grass before they start to rotate. This can eventually bend the bracket that holds the tension pulleys. He said he is trying to tell the company to include this in the owners manual....See MoreSimplicity 5216H Eating Drive Belts
Comments (16)More info. After a beer tonight, got underneath the tractor and found the belt stuck in between one of the idler pulleys and its bracket above. The belt came to a screeching halt and, of course, wore off at the crank pulley. Come to remember, it did that last time, too... (he says, foreshadowingly). Thinking over all the thoughts here, I looked at that particular idler pulley (one of the flat ones where the back of the belt rides, immediately off the crankshaft pulley) and it appeared to be worn more at the top than the bottom, toward its bracket. I messed around with it further and noticed that its bracket -- a bellcrank that has another pulley that controls the tension when the brake/de-clutch pedal is released -- was wobbly rather than pivoting in one plane. I removed that bellcrank and the two pulleys on it and found the spacer that it pivots on was worn, as well as the hole in the bellcrank it fits into (both are held onto the tractor frame with a bolt). So here's my theory: this bellcrank pivot point wore to the point where it was tilting downward at the front (toward the crank) and was both wearing the top edge of the belt (in previous times I found evidence of that) and/or popping off the top edge of that leading pulley and getting caught. When it got caught, the belt stopped and the crankshaft pulley wore through it. This reasonably explains all the symptoms I've been seeing. For further reference, I found no evidence that the belt was riding deep enough into any v-pulley groove to bottom out; the parts book shows the same crankshaft pulley assembly for both engines. Tomorrow I call a Simplicity parts dealer to see if the bellcrank, spacer, and pulleys are still available. If so, then ~$100 in parts (including a new belt) and I'm "back on the road." I do have the Jonesin' for a new lawn tractor, but this ole gal has been so good for me it's hard to "quit her"... Thanks, I'll keep you posted. - GA...See MoreJD deck timing belt
Comments (10)A couple years ago JD made the belts stronger. I doubt anyone else would offer such a belt as they are not a high volume item. The belt is designed to be the fuse in the system, so it does break before something more expensive else gets bent, like the deck shell. Honestly, mowing a 4-acre field with rocks is beyond what an LT155 with a Freedom was designed to do. An LT155 is a 1.5 acre max machine, and the Freedom 42 is for manicured lawns only. Just not the best fit there. The only downside of the Freedom 42 is that early on JD and dealers didn't do the best job of qualifying what customers should or shouldn't have them. There may be some of those first gen LT's starting to die out there now, so keep your eyes open for a used 38" deck from a LT133 or LT155. Comments (17)"Does the engagement lever itself feel secure in the tower?" There was a reason that question was asked. I'm referring to the engagement arm and how it is supported. On a 97 model, I seem to rememeber still had each end of the rod mounted on a rubber block rather than mounted through the plastic tower w/ a nut on each side. The new style tower i think got rid of the tilt steering feature too. The rubber mounted ones would pull out if they had too much tension on them- IE from the too small belt previously installed. By this time you also have notable wear in the arm and fastener on the top of the deck. That may contribute some as well. If you remove one of the fuel tank bracket nuts and swing it out of the way- the fuel tank will lift up so you can have a look at the control and cable. If the control rod slipped off of the tower, call 18003482424 and see if they will send you an updated tower....See Moremileena3
