2002 VW Jetta - good used car choice?

Hi! I posted awhile back asking your opinions on a Cube. We decided to instead go for a used car under $5000.

One choice is a 2002 VW Jetta, manual transmission and 95000 miles. We've never owned a VW. Any opinions on old Jettas? We'll be taking it to our own mechanic tomorrow for a once over.

The body looks good, and the Carfax report has nothing of concern. We currently own two Toyotas with over 100K each.

Thanks,
Susan

Has timing belt been changed? A worn clutch is not cheap. Ok car in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply, Joe. My husband took it to our mechanic who said, "You don't want this car." I'm not sure what was wrong, but I guess it wasn't so good under the hood.

We revamped our criteria, and ended up buying a 2009 Hyundai Sonata for well under KBB. And our mechanic could only find a couple scratches underneath. It's now our newest car, 2nd best gas mileage, mostly driven by son and husband. I continue to drive the boring white Sienna...sigh.
