insufficient egr flow

I have a 110k '95 Ford Contour 2.0 4 cyl, and mainly do my posting in www.contour.org, but we seem to be out of ideas over there. I have the check engine code P0332 - Insuffient EGR flow. It just started. Learning of the many problems of this car from the contour.org site, I have done the following soon after buying this car 3 months ago:

new wires/plugs

new timing belt, serp belt

new EGR valve, IAC valve, DPFE sensor

replaced cracked vac lines

cleaned throttle body

cleaned MAF

replaced all filters

The car actually runs great but I would still like this CEL to go away. Since the EGR itself is new and has worked fine for two months before this CEL came on, I doubt that is the problem. The site recommended I clean the TB which I did, as well as the EGR passages behind the TB. I do not know what else to do, but this board has been helpful in the past so I am asking for any further ideas. Thanks all.

OK, what perameters does the system use to determine EGR flow? By looking at freeze frame data, when does the code set, cruise or decel? What is the DPFE voltage KOEO, (key on engine off), KOER (Key on engine running), How much does the DPFE voltage change when vacuum is applied to the EGR opening it fully at idle, that is right up until the car stalls. And lastly how high does the DPFE voltage go when the egr is commanded on fully during light to moderate acceleration? When running the KOER self test, does the EGR code for low flow set?

This is how a tech would approach this issue.

A real technician - a man worthy of 40% to 50% of the flat rate. Todays cars are that complex that maybe half the bill should be the diagnosis...
This is much better than the obsolete prevalent "parts throwing at a problem" of yesterday and still today....Or a visit to AutoZone for a "free" reading of the codes...
I wish someone would paint my roof for free... lol.....

Most high end ranges require 5/8" or 3/4" flex connector from the wall to the range. What diameter pipe is necessary to get from the meter to the connection point depends on several factors including distance of run, input pressure, branches and elbows etc. Whole house tankless water heaters run about 200 MBH (200k BTU/h) and would require a dedicated 1" line to run about 50-70ft using standard IP. In my house, there was an existing 1" line that fed a standard water heater and a furnace. When we redid our kitchen, my builder was originally planning to branch off of that line but I pushed him to upgrade with another 1" line off the meter that ran to the kitchen and 1/2" branch for a future fireplace. Keep in mind that a 1" line is approx the equivalent of 4x 1/2" lines so it's a lot cheaper to run a larger diameter line than to run multiple equivalent lines assuming location of your appliances are near or inline with each other. Not sure what you have today so can't judge if what your sales guy is quoting but I will say that most houses are under spec for running a high power range plus a furnace and a water heater. Add to that your desire to go tankless, I would expect that you will definitely need to upgrade your gas service. For point of reference, a 4 ton furnace is 48 MBH, standard water heater is 40-60 MBH, a 36" high power gas range max about 180MBH, and a tankless water heater is 200MBH. Now you are unlikely to have all of your burners on max and the oven on at the same time so assuming your existing line is 1" and services the range and the furnace and is less than around 80 feet long, then you should be ok for the range and furnace. Then you can simply run another 1" line direct from the gas meter all the way to your tankless water heater. You might not need a 1" line if you are locating the unit close to your meter. Alternately, if all of this is new construction, then you can run a single 1.5" min (I would go 1.75-2") line with sufficiently sized branches for each of the appliances. I was thinking you had seating in both rooms that might be exchanged. How many max do you want to seat in each room? A good basic start is a 3-seat sofa and 2 armchairs but that really only seats 4 since most will leave an empty seat between them on a 3-seat sofa. Two don't usually sit side by side on a loveseat either. This might be a good area to designate as conversation and dining area for guests while you convert your sitting room to a media room with the TV and sectional for more private family time. Do you want to post pix and the size of that other room? Assume you don't have a separate formal dining room.

I would like to add that when I last had friends who worked in Hospice, they provide adjunct care - visits from PT, OT, and Wound Care, music therapists, social workers, pastoral care workers, and maybe bathing aids. They did not provide basic sitters/nursing assistants. That is also not covered by Medicare. It is all up to family and state Medicaid (if the income is low enough) to pay for basic care. There were a very few onsite Hospice Care homes, though, where everything was covered (I believe). Those are rare. I do not know if Medicare pays for "memory care," which are like locked nursing homes for dementia patients, for more than the 100 days they pay for initial nursing home care. You would need to look into that if that time comes. Last I knew, Medicare paid only for skilled nursing care (where you need an RN or Physical or Occupational Therapy), never for any basic care. And the max was for up to 100 days (they decide when you are well enough to go home and quit paying for it then.)

Here is a good tutorial on sprinkler systems. Keep in mind it's by Toro, so they recommend all their products. Other brands work as well. Is the gpm you're showing the flow rate of each sprinkler head? What is the gpm at the source? My system has 1" pvc as the supply line to each valve, then 3/4" pvc to each head. The 3/4" then reduces down to 1/2" risers to fit each sprinkler head. 45 PSI is enough to water that size yard but not if your gpm is extremely low.

I don't have a repair manual for your engine. That would be the first step - gaining access to a decent repair manual. You might be able to find some information on-line at your local library if they maintain a subscription to a an auto repair service.

First, determine if the pintle of the ERG can move. Usually, there is a procedure in the repair manual that will exercise the pintle. This will give you a starting point. If the pintle does not move, find out why.

You mentioned that the EGR valve was replaced. Were the exhaust gas passageways checked for blockage when the valve was replaced? Often, these passageways clog and have to be manually cleaned.

Remove and plug the vacuum line to the EGR. Apply a hand vacuum pump to the ERG, pull a vacuum and look for pintle movement. If the pintle moves, then next with the engine running at idle, apply a vacuum and as the pintle opens, the engine may stumble. If the pintle moves and there is no change in engine operation, suspect clogged passageways.

John_G has given the order of diagnostic tests, but you'll have to have the correct instrumnetation to take the readings, and then, intrepret the results. He's making a point that maybe taking the job to a qualified tech is the thing to do, and that the cost is justified if the problem gets fully identified.
